Uttarakhand Glacier Burst Explained

This video is on Uttarakhand glacial Lake outburst flooding (GLOF). Now there are speculations, whether the flood was triggered by a Glacier Lake burst or landslide. Many experts are looking into it. As a citizen of Uttarakhand who just returned from a biking-trip from dehradun to auli and back....that was around new-year...the news of people dying in this disaster is indeed shocking as the road to auli passses has many bridges over catchment areas which could pose severe flashflood threats to commuters caught unawares in such situations.

Thank you sir for your clear presentation. When I first heard that there had been a glacier burst I becane concerned for the safety of friends who live in the region. However, my friends live in the Gangotri area. Having seen the rate of glacial recession and level if hydro and roading development in Uttarakhand on my last visit in 2019, it worries me as this region is so fragile. Finally I found a video which explains this accident better. Indeed this is a quality work, hats off to you sir. I am from Kerala and I would say Kerala medias will come up with much more graphical and augmented reality videos to explain incidents (floods, land slide, even new bridges and city traffic jam) to public, which I never see coming from any national news channels. May be there but I didn't see any simple videos like yours for the utarakhand incident.

Picture a summer lake that is 200' deep. Winter comes and it freezes 10' thick. A glacier snaps off upstream. Said piece of ice is 150' high hitting a 10' thick piece of ice and voila, instant flood.

Thank you. I am suspicious that the actual outburst was due to an internal build up of water within the glacier itself, and subsequent violent collapse, rather than a terminal meltwater lake release. Glaciers travel on a lubricated bed of meltwater that migrates internally, downward within the glacier. These normally outflow as a river but can become trapped behind ice. I will be interested to know the cause, as it maybe an ominous omen for the future. Regardless, I appreciate your explanation. I have visited a number of the news sites and noted a strong religious narrative in the comments. I'm sure it is well meaning, but it isn't going to help us understand the potential for this to happen again.

Usually it seen/observed that glacial lake outburst happen in peak summer months on sunny days. Since the current flooding in gharwal happened in early February if it was a glacial lake outburst it could only have been triggered as a result of avalanche. Possibility of a avalanche having blocked the course river and then it bursting could also be a possibility, in this case the people downstream would have observed the river flow getting reduced then the normal before the flood.
