Answer: Manually check the page. if it is removed, either a) change the URL to the relevant page or b) remove the link. But If the page is not removed, check the spelling of the URL if they are current. I also have a question: What if the 404 pages in GSC are not found in the sitemap or on the website and we have a lot of 404 listings in GSC like 200+ pages. should I just let them sit there?

Here if we found 4O4 Error in the internal linking then first of all we try to fix that 4O4 Error page, otherwise we change the internal linking URL with another one relevant website pages. After made changes in that page we can click on Request for indexing from the search console so google bot will crawl that page again and get proper page details.🤔🤗

if page goes to 404, since that page doesn't have any content, then also google will depass the link joice, as it bad experience. Atleast if you send to correct page, it analyses content and then passes the link juice. you need to create a relevant article to that 404 page and redirect to that one.

Google search console has a long memory because updating it frequently for millions of accounts doesn’t provide much benefit. Thats why you see long expired sitemaps in search console. Google will eventually drop them. You don’t need to worry about them. GSC is not live, it will take time to update there.
