You don't have good experience in fire fighting design! don't worry, in this lesson we will go step by step showing how to size a fire pump for the stand pipe and fire hose systems.
NFPA 14 is the required code to use in this lesson.
Note: I assumed only one riser is existing (F) when I performed the friction loss calculations for the 60 m portion of pipe. However, in case we have more than one riser like the schematic in the video which has six risers, A, B, C, D, E, and F, then the friction losses should be calculated based on the Hazen Williams formula as follows:
1. Flow in Riser F = 500 gpm (length to be considered: from bottom of riser E to 2nd remote unit on riser F because the most remote one is calculated in the 4 m portion)
2. Flow in pipe connecting E, F = 250 + 500 = 750 gpm (Length from bottom of D to bottom of E)
3. Flow in pipe connecting D, E, F = 250 + 250 + 500 = 1000 gpm (Length from bottom of C to bottom of D)
4. Flow in pipe connecting C, D, E, F = 250 + 250 +250 + 500 = 1250 gpm (Length from bottom of B to bottom of C)
5. flow from pump to bottom of riser C = 1250 gpm, because total not to exceed 1250 gpm.

Maybe it is the best explanation, thank you!!! Really, but what about the sizing of pump, if that pump is serving FHC + SPRINKLERS AND + HYDRANT systems together ? Please, respond me

Thank you so much for this video.what if there is a single main line having 52 Hydrant( class 1) for 6.5km long road tunnel( elevation from one portal to the other is 145m , uniform gradient). How will then we calculate

Thanks a lot.Good explanation at all. What about the sizing of pump with sprinklers and stand pipe? Or we just need to sum sprinkler hydrauclic calculation + hydraulic calculation of stand pipe? Hoping you will notice me
@AMJEngineering

Yes you have to sum it.

No. Whichever is greater, which is usually standpipe demand.

refer to 3:47, it is friction loss in pipes

great video. But why does the diameter of the pipe changes from 6 inches to 6.065 inches?
@AMJEngineering
@AMJEngineering 3 жыл бұрын
6 inches is the nominal diameter size. for friction loss calculations you have to consider internal diameter.

Such a wonderful explanation, much appreciated keep it up. if there is one riser serving 9 floors of building and each floor has 4 fire hose cabinets, then what would be the size of main riser a/c to NFPA?
