The Upper Aalenian: A time of change in the Jurassic
The Upper Aalenian, which lasted from around 171.6 to 170.3 million years before our time, is the youngest stage of the Aalenian and thus the second stage of the Middle Jurassic (Brown Jurassic). It is characterized by a series of geological and paleontological changes that provide insight into the dynamic nature of this era.
Geological features:
Marine transgression and regression: The Upper Aalenian was characterized by renewed marine transgression, leading to deepening of shelves and expansion of marine cover. However, regression also occurred as the stage progressed, leading to the formation of coastal deposits and tidal flats.
Sedimentation: The sediments of the Upper Aalenian consist mainly of limestones, clay marls and sandstones. They reflect the different depositional environments, which ranged from marine shallow water areas to terrestrial coastal regions.
Volcanic activity: In some regions, such as southern Germany, there was volcanic activity during the Upper Aalenian. These led to the deposition of tuffs and other volcanic rocks.
Paleontological features:
Ammonites: The ammonite fauna of the Upper Aalenian is very diverse and is characterized by the appearance of new genera and species. Typical representatives of this stage are the ammonites of the families Stephanoceratidae, Perisphinctidae and Oppeliidae.
Other fossils: In addition to ammonites, fossils of other marine animals can also be found in the Upper Aalenian, such as belemnites, brachiopods, mussels and sea urchins. In addition, some terrestrial fossils are also known, including plant remains and dinosaur finds.
Climate and environment:
The climate in the Upper Aalenian was warm and humid. However, there were also seasonal fluctuations, resulting in rainfall and dry periods. The vegetation consisted mainly of ferns, gymnosperms and conifers.
Meaning:
The Upper Aalenian is an important stage in earth's history as it marks the transition from the Lower to the Upper Jurassic. The geological and paleontological changes of this stage give us valuable information about the environmental conditions and the evolution of life during this period.
