For those who don't want to purchase special papers or labels, one can just type the words in a large font on the cheaper printer paper and by making borders or just leaving sufficient space between clusters of information (what you want on the label) is an easy way to print as many labels or label sheets as you need. They sell inexpensive paper cutters to make straight and neat cuts. You can also just cut a piece of the boxes the ammo comes in and tape or glue it on to your container.

Great "to-the-point" information. Thank you. You can purchase non-metalic desiccant containers that allow you to microwave your desiccant for just a few minutes to "re-charge" it. You can also buy a 5 pound bag of pure (100%) silica cat liter for the price of 2 of those canisters. The cat litter does the same thing and is rechargeable too. About a tablespoon per can is enough, but two is better. I'd set my dehumidifier to a certain humidity level and let it do it's thing. Continuous cycling like how you have it set will shorten it's life and not guarantee a consistent humidity level. Of course, it's your party and you can do what you want. Thanks again!

With the ammo still in their respective boxes, a 50 Cal ammo can will, more or less, take the following amounts: .22 (16-1800 rounds); 12 Ga (160-170 Rds); 9mm (800 Rds). Loose pack, you'll most likely get more. These are based on the actual amounts stored in the 50 Cal Ammo Can within this very video. Hope this helps, and thanks for your vote of confidence --GM

Great video as always. Glad to see you posting videos again AS. I always looked forward to your videos as I was getting started prepping a few years ago. Ive had ak steel rds in an ammo can for years plus 9mm rds and so on. I got some 38sp rounds in regular cases and left them in my gun cabinet for a year or two and noticed slight corrosion today. Not bad enough to not shoot but worse then my 9mm ammo in my can. I dont use dehumidifier or even gel packs for that matter. Ammo cans do extend ammo life though

While at a firearm instructional course (Canada), it was suggested that in the event of a house fire, a properly vented ammo box would allow the gun powder gas off as it burned up...The military ammo can was frowned upon because of it's sealed design does not allow venting, therefore creating a potential for the expanding gases from burning gunpowder to rupture the ammo can, maybe violently...bad for the firemen. Great vid as usual. I'm just sharing this info for your consideration.

Thanks for the great insight. I like the GI ammo cans too (They are stackable and just feel like an old friend [sic]). My wife prefers the hard plastic ones that look almost the same - because they are lighter. We keep our calibers/guages to a minimum, but keep some common calibers that we don't normally use for barter or "pick-ups" just in-case.

I use a desiccant product (MIMI Litter I buy at Walmart) and a 300 cc oxygen absorber pack (used for food storage I buy online) in 50 cal. military ammo cans. Four tablespoons of the desiccant in a pouch (like an old nylon stocking) and two oxygen absorber packs per can. I have ammo I have stored this way, back in 1980, that is still as fresh as the day the can was sealed. Plastic ammo boxes deform at the seal when lifted due to the weight of the contents, exchanging air. Metal cans do not deform that way.

Shopping locally on this is the best method. Shipping cost can blow your budget due to the larger size and often multiple cans purchased. I have found them local to me for around ten dollars at the surplus store. I also recently found Cabelas plastic version with rubber seals for seven dollars locally. For a budget price they are pretty good and air tight.

sometimes your best bet is a good gunshow. I picked up a couple good ones about 3 years ago. I think I paid about $10 each for some 30cal ammo cans. granted it was at a show that was a good hour & half away from me. Don't discount the MTM case guard cans. they are plastic, but can be had for comparable or cheaper if you keep an eye out for deals/sales. I keep loose ammo in the 30cal cans, & shotgun in a fat 50. I find that I prefer the 30 cal cans over the regular 50 cal cans. hope this helps

To my understanding, the rubber seal on ammo cans is supposed to...work. If that's the case, there should be no need to recharge gel paks at all; they should absorb what moisture is in the air in the can, and then that air should be "dry" and stay dry.

Don't forget to use dressing on the gaskets. I use beeswax from a pool store that is used to coat o rings that are in constant contact with chlorine. Just a tiniest amount will do and the container of wax is about five bucks and will last forever. This will also promote a better seal.

Wow is thay all factory ammo??? I live in Alberta Canada and handload , have been doing so for 35 years, I allso use military new unused surplus cans that we get at a locale branch of a national chain store , now payong 29.00 for new unused surplus or 21 for used surplus , I have 45-70 cast bullet handloads that were stored in the early 80s with no silica , I found them while doing my powder invitory . I had 53 rounds I went into the back yard and fired evey one of them across my chronograph and tjey all functioned flawlessly and had a standard deviation of 34fps they showed no sign of corrosion witch would show as a white chalk like substances arround the mouth of the case were the lead and brass contact as dissimilar metals will do this , I do beleive I got very lucky and attribute the lack of corrosion to our dry winters and the area of my storage. I am very impressed with the amount of factory ammo but do you relize the amount of cash you would save if you were loading that . I shoot many rifles and I shoot 5000-8000 rounds a year and my twin 23 year old boys do the same with the cost of ammo especially for 338Lapua Mag and 50 BMG I could not do any were near the amount of shooting I do , I have many thousands of rounds stored and I am going to use the silica in my new cans , as a welder I sometimes over do things becous 25 or 30 years ago I started welding 2 , 1/4" fittings on my long term storage cans then useing a snall ball valve filling from the top fitting niteogen gas under vacum from the bottom fitting, at the time it was a solution to what I saw as a problem, I guess im a bit bished lol I just got a computer last December after a motor vehicle accident broke my hi crushed my pelvis and spiral fracture of right femur, never had the time for computers and at 53 was illiterate with them, I was to busy shooting, loading, hunting and working and saw them as a waste of time , now im learning lots , I use a very similar label system and all load info including lot numbers for brass powder, primers, bullets are allso included on a load sheet with velocity and rifle tested with are allso recorded and this sheet is inside the ammo can on top of tje ammo , I allso found that the 50 caliber can will hold 1200 rounds of 7.62x39 in stripper clips and outlast the wooden boxes that the Chek surplus comes in . What are your thoughts on this should I continue to use nitrogen and vacuum fill the cans or is the silica method as good . I have a guage that reads in HG of vacuum and I check cans occasionally I had one can that had lost its vacuum out of 43 , but this is a lot of work and does make storage a isue becouse of the valves on the uper side and lower side of the can . This is long term storage . I was looking at some wafer valves yesterday that would protrude less . I think from what iv seen on your video and the fact that I have had zero miss fires with the 1953 Chek surplus that is stored in a wooden crate with paper wrap and tar . I am way overdone on my storage methods

What is your thought on keeping the ammo out of the individual boxes inside the ammo can? Like loose storage inside the can itself? I was just wondering because i be got my ammo I'm starting to store up and was looking into getting the cans and was just going to take them out of the factory boxes and dump them in the can with a moisture absorber packet and tear the side of the box they came in and tape it to the under side of the lid. Also labeling the outside of course. What do y'all think?
@GingerMan69420
@GingerMan69420 9 жыл бұрын
+Zach McKinney The only real negative I see is weight and portability. That can will be much heavier since you can fit more ammo. It would also be harder to manage once you need in the can. With the ammo in it's original box, you can pull out a box and know exactly how many rounds you have on hand.

+Zach McKinney Missed your comment last time I was here. I buy bulk (loose) ammunition when it is on sale, and that is it. I figure the convenience to be able and grab a box of 20 or 50, whichever caliber we are talking about, far exceeds the few extra rounds I would be able to cram into a ammo box. Or are you going to count and pass out ammo to each individual guard point during SHTF? Me, would much rather throw up a box of ammo to each location after an event. =) Just my two copper pieces.

Would it be advantageous to apply silicone grease to the can's gasket or is that totally unnecessary?

What brand of label do you use? I have many ammo cans full of ammo and tried labelling them years ago, but Avery brand stationary type labels peel off after just a few minutes and fall to the floor, leaving me no idea what can they came from. I am still having to search through many cans to find what I am looking for.
