I think one underrated scare that doesn't do much but it makes you feel super unsafe is after the pillbox you return to your safe room and there is one of the monsters holes in the corner of the room and the table that was in front of it was smashed and the safe room music gone. Sadly the game doesn't seem to actually make the safe room unsafe but it does make you feel vulnerable as the haven you have been relying on as a safe rest from the horror of the bunker is breached.

A memorable moment for me had to be when I went into the safe room late game and there was a rat hole in the wall. Suddenly my safe haven was no longer secure. I stared at the hole for a solid minute calculating where I'd escape to if it turned out the creature was in the room with me. There was real terror in the realization that it might be in the room with me. Every time I went back to that room after that I had to search and ensure that I wasn't locking myself in with the creature before I felt safer and I never felt completely safe again. That being said, I kind of wish the creature had broken into the safe room at least once. It would have been a bold subversion of expectations.

There was a lot of places the monster could have popped up that would have been terrifying. That's why I'm not against scripted moments when they're well utilized. Lots of people myself included tried to save the prisoner and that was an extremely memorable portion of the game. I think if we had a few more events like that mixed in it could have made an already terrifying game even better.@@chattw6885

It kinda reminds me of the weaponry of alien: isolation. Sure they’re are more enemy types in that game that do die, whenever you’re just against the unkillable xenomorph the only things your guns do is to deter it. albeit the most effective being the flamethrower. It’s really different just kinda similar vibes when it comes to that.

I love the psychology behind it. It’s so clever. Obviously your initial reaction is “wahoo I can defend myself” then a second later it’s: “…..oh. That means I’m going to HAVE to defend myself.” Rather than knowing the game’s not going to force you into conflict.

Yeah, I'd imagine that a Frictional take on the SCP concept would probably end up being a defunct 1910-1930 era secure facility set underground in one of three places: 1. Colonial era Canada in the deep reaches of the northern forest wilderness. 2. Either Tsarist or Communist Russia in the Siberian tundra. Or 3. In the dense and isolated jungles of South America. The first would be a place to isolate and lock away various "things" captured across the British empire moved to one of the more isolated places in their possession, the second would be a study facility used by the Russians to try and research these newfound creatures captured in the Siberian wilderness, and the third could be some sort of secret 1930s American company operating close to the Panama canal looking for exotic things to make the next big innovation through whatever means necessary no matter their darkness or depravity.

The Bunker isn't even Frictional's main project, they work on two games at a time working on one full time, and the other part time, before stepping into the next game full time. I love the Bunker but I kind of get the feeling that it was a playground for Frictional to explore new methods of environmental horror and also how their games actually develop in terms of progress. Frictional can tell good stories, and they have proven twice in 20 years that they can scare us real well. Looking forward to whatever is next!

I regard Soma to be the best in the list because 1. im a sucker for technological dystopias and 2. that the ending makes me cry every time. @JohnDoeWasntTaken

Agreed. Soma is still in my opinion the best game Frictional has ever made. And one of my top 10 games of all time. Who the hell cares if it's just a "walking simulator", the story is so gripping and cuts so deep that you completely forget about the lack of gameplay. I would do anything for another game like Soma. Literally everything about that game is 11/10 imo, I especially just adore how it's set at the seafloor on some underwater research base. (spoilers ahead) I'll _never_ forget that moment in the beginning of the game, going in for that brain scan wondering "okay, when does the scary part start?" and getting nervous because of how normal everything seemed up until then. Then after the scanner lifts off Simon's face and he ends up in that dark Pathos-II room, I was just wondering "what the f%ck???" trying to process in my brain any possible scenario that could explain the situation he was now in. And even though the robots in the game tell you that you're a robot yourself in the beginning, I thought they were just crazy or whatever and that I was the same Simon as before. That game hit so hard for me, 11/10.

Funny enough I actually played this game before Rebirth, so when I saw those rocks in the pit I was genuinely unnerved by them. Ironically even more than how I flew facing the Beast. I knew WHAT the Beast was. I knew what the Beast WANTED. I knew what it’d do when it CAUGHT ME. But those unexplainable rocks? Floating, shivering, seemingly begging for attention, I don’t know what they are. I don’t know if they want anything. I don’t know what would happen if I got near them. It’s that fear that really got me. Well, that and the click of an empty revolver. First horror game I’ve ever played where hearing a click genuinely filled me with overwhelming fear.

I feel the bunker has a certain advantage to its fear factor is that it feels more real and plausible than other amnesia titles, other titles look like a nightmare or an acid trip but the monster in the bunker can easily fit as an experiment gone wrong horror story like countless other war stories, not to mention the war in the game is based on the real life WW I so it feels more realistic
@aydinmakesthings

I thought that the Rebirth floating rocks actually made that scene in the pit a little more impactful for me. Knowing that somewhere, while maybe unreachable, lies an entrance into that nightmare world. A world that doomed itself by making suffering power its lights. And the French army is on it's door step! The Otherworld is a place that no human would ever want to go to. The fact Tasi got out alive of that place multiple times is shocking, especially seeing as she was pregnant. Maybe it's cause I'm a sucker for stories about otherworldly horrors, but the lore of the series being all tied together is something I really like!

After I played it I went to the big horror youtubers to watch them play it - the vast majority of them sprinted around the game, chucked grenades around to open doors, and generally acted like the monster didn't exist until it showed up, more often than not just getting lucky and surviving. They seemed to generally hold the opinion that it was good, but "just another amnesia game" wherein the monster spawns, you hide, then it despawns and you continue as if it vanished from existence, like it was in the original. It was frustrating that many of them seemed not to engage with the game's core thesis at all.

To me the concept of the Bunker was particularly terrifying. Has it is connect to WW1, has a nice plotwist which I understood after reading an achievement what it was, but not everyone will. What made it also so terrific was the sound design. every time I've heard him I escaped. For like 1/3 of the game I didn't even see how he looked like, which scared me even more. Also when the lights turn off and you start hearing sounds and don't know from where he comes from, since the map is big and he learns from your mistakes, from where you go ane creates new holes to reach you easier if you keep the lights on for too long. This made me scared in an horror game again, since in games like RE 8 you've got an arsenal and no one can touch you.

I'm just going to copy my comment from the music from the shotgunner encounter, since it sums up my experience with what I think is the most haunting part of the game, bar none: God this scene, I can't think of the last time a game managed to make my stomach churn the way this encounter did. The drop down into the chamber. The thick fog obscuring both my vision and my flashlight. The sudden shotgun blast causing me to grip my revolver tightly. The maddened singing echoing the words from notes I had found in the bunker above. The brief thought that there was nobody else here and I had just lost my mind. The unnatural shadowy figure in the darkness that caught me off guard. The gunshot that rang out as I fired at it. The voice saying it could hear me. The sound of a shotgun blast and a door being blown off its hinges. The singing getting closer. The silhouette of a man in the corner of a room. The man turning to face me. The man lifting his shotgun. The revolver already pointed at his head. The singing falling silent.

Wanna know something fucked up? The only other 2 living humans in the Bunker that you meet... you can avoid killing them and just leave them in the bunker. The Prisoner is traumatized and only wants his cell closed, but the other guy, if you run with the lever, he will call you coward and demand to comeback, before breaking down and begging to not be left alone before returning to his mad ramblings.

I never gonna forget the moment when the game make me feel safe, I end up blocking the main hallway holes with heavy boxes, even saw the monster trying to get through and hitting his head, hilarious, only to come back later and noticed the box destroyed and the hole open again, truly a master piece in horror game design, specially for a lil spook close to the end.

I've been a life long fan of Amnesia and Frictional in general. However, after Rebirth I decided to hold out on buying Bunker until it drops in price, and so I bought it over a year after the release. I'm so amazed at how the game turned out, I think I can be sure that Frictional learned from Rebirth and understand EXACTLY what we want out of Amnesia. I will be preordering the next game they have in store for us.

Masterful editing. Especially like those third-person views of things. Even slight angle changes add a ton to the impressions when viewing. Regarding your points, I fully agree with them. The ending sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of the game, and the AI is in need of an upgrade. But it can't be overstated how magnificent the immersion, atmosphere, fun game mechanics, soundtrack & music, and many other things are.

I wasn't a big horror fan. I remember when I got Xbox Game Pass with my new laptop, I decided to just make the most of it and looked through the selection. I didn't play any games in a while and there wasn't any I was particularly interested in, all I knew is that I wanted to try out a horror game for the first time. I looked through the Amnesia selection, got the game thinking it seemed interesting, and oh my gosh I ached in regret as I pissed my pants seeing that guy get devoured in the beginning or listening to the damn thing chase me around while I cranked that friggin flash light trying to find a closet to hide in. I'm a completionist, and so I couldn't just delete it either, and so I begrudgingly continued playing the game. When I finished, I remember feeling so stunned and longed to play it again. My hands shook for at least a couple minutes after from just the adrenaline of playing the game. Solid 10/10, would pee my pants again.

Fun fact: When Abe talks about how they had to say the word dickety because the Kaiser stole the word twenty, it's a reference to this war. Not to be confused with the time when they called sauerkraut "liberty slaw" and they called liberty slaw "super slaw" because he stated "three wars back" which would put it to World War II which may be when they had to tie and onion to their belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was the big yellow ones.
