So I think that the mom is that shadow because she's abusive and a alcoholic, and I have proof to back myself up because at the start the mom had wine stains and you can see the monster looks like they are drinking. the dad is the bear, not only he comes to take the child at the end but he helps you throughout the game. The child has depicted his mother as a monster and the father is a safe haven for the child.

Even after years has passed I still love this game. I love how well it showed the story, and how it shows how relationships in real life can really be messed up. Even now I still feel bad for the child because of everything that’s going on on his perspective. It’s still crazy to believe the child is only two, so this really shows that no matter the age, every child can see and imagine things as bad as this.

The last part with the mother made me cry. I never thought this was a horror game, it’s more sad, this whole game was about the mother’s memory’s and collecting then, but in reality the mother was the one trying to stop the kid. I didn’t know the mother was the monster for a while. But now I understand in more ways then before.

Did anyone else hear the dad in the beginning say, "so I'm not allowed to give _her_ that" before the mother replies sharply, "no"? I find that very interesting. It didn't sound like "him" at all to me. There are lots of clues that the baby in the game is a little girl. In the baby's room in the prologue, there are lots of girly stuff, and look at the paintings in the main game, the ones that change when you get closer; there's a child that looks female in them. Even in the puzzle. Could be a coincidence, of course. But I also hear the child's voice, it sounds female. Especially since they're two years old, it sounds a little too high-pitched to be a boy. Sure, you can believe they're male, but this is just my theory.

I think you're just hearing things. All I could discern from the conversation was the mother saying "What are you doing here" and then sharply saying "no." As for the Prologue, I did notice that. I think it was supposed to give a sense of ambiguity to the character, so that people of different audiences and groups could sympathize with the character the same way. If the baby was exclusively one gender, it would likely not connect with certain groups of people as well.

The Mother was an abusive alcoholic, who constantly terrorized and abused the child. For the child, this manifested into a monster attacking him while he tries to look for his mother, who it sees as loving and caring. As for the Father, not much is known about him other than that he carried the baby away after presumably gaining custody over him. This is supported by the statement made by the mother, "He will *not* take you from me," which suggests the father is trying his best to take the child away from her unhealthy lifestyle.

But the mommy was drunk and abusive towards him/her. At the end of the game, the daddy was able to get full custody of his child, so he came to take the child away from the drunken mommy so that he/she was safe from harm. The monster that torments the child in the middle of the game is how the child views the mommy when she's drinking and full of sorrow. Also, when the child's vision goes blurry or static like, that is how the child's fear is presented when the monster AKA the mother is near him/her

So from what i understand based off this whole run through It seemed like, the main house was the mom's house. The mother gets confronted by father in their old house about her drinking and possibly abusing the child. She waves him off and probably gets worse. Eventually he snaps and abuses her. Which turns the entire house cold and has the kid relying solely on toys and distractions for happiness and warmth. So she leaves with the baby. Saying its too much. Then at the mom's house, she goes off the rails with drinking and the father starts the motions of taking the son. Baby gets the bear from her dad as a b day gift. That's why the bear is seen as a protective source and is hated by the monster(mom) Probably at some point there was a tug of war between them over the baby with his bear in arms, the bear gets ripped. Or the mother was tanked, saw baby having fun with the bear which is from dad, gets salty, and yanks him from the baby so hard that the arm rips. Which then we see the dad promises to fix it while leaving with the baby. The quest the baby goes on is a metaphor for him trying to get the mom he loves back using memories from when she was happy and a good mother. But is quickly snapped back to reality when pushed down by the drunk mom. Poor fucking baby 😭

Most likely mom did put Teddy in the wash. As for the coats, don't know why there so many, it could be a figment of the kids imagination, the monsters represents how the kid sees his mother. The thing with the umbrella is mom going out to drink, the witch by the well is the mom whens she's drunk, and the coat monster is the mom when she returns from getting the drink.

Dad does have custody. That's a prologue, meaning it happened in the beginning, before the main story. As for the rabbit, I think we're meant to assume it was left behind, forgotten in the snow
