Amongst the bells - Chesterton, Cambridgeshire

We join the bells at Chesterton during a quarter attempt of Plain Bob Minor, preceeded by some opening rounds on the back 5, plus downwards on 2, 4 and 6.
The bells themselves are a pretty decent, boomy and meaty 6, the spire possibly contributing to some interesting accoustics - listening back to them with headphones helps to bring out the deep tones and hums. They are hung quite snug below the spire in an H frame which is situated above two relatively substantial intermediate floors and quite a tall ground floor ringing room - probably 20ish foot.
The ropes when we visited were quite springy and the tenor was challenging when turning it into minor compared to the front 5 - the striking wasn't quite on point either. A very nice and rewarding 6 though - would happily try for another quarter.

I particularly like the sound of the treble at backstroke. It is hung from a wooden headstock isn't it?

Yes, the treble is the only bell in the tower with a wooden headstock. It sounds more prominent than the rest too.

The stay is on the wheel end of the headstock.

No, all the ropes still look like they are the same, as in David Richards's video.

The tenor is notoriously difficult to ring - it’s the reason so few quarters have been rung here in the past few years. The bells in general need a good bit of TLC; the clappers on the back 2 might benefit from a full restoration, and the bearings could do with some work. They’re also extremely quiet in the ringing chamber as there are two intermediate chambers between the ground floor and the bells - something else that could do with improving as they’re rather difficult to hear with the rope noise on the guide. A shame really as they really do sound brilliant, and the front 5 go extremely well.
