As a boy soprano in the Australian Opera for several years, I had the privilege of being on stage with Donald Smith. Hearing him sing was a glorious and utterly unforgettable experience. He was a phenomenal Calaf, Cavaradossi, Manrico and Duke - among numerous other roles. I love these compilations! A chance to hear singers I don't know. It's just fun to hear the differences. I understand why people love Jussi, his warmth. Surely this is not Corelli's best performance? although I liked the variety of his dynamics (too many tenors sing heroic arias heroically from beginning to end). Donald Smith -- what a great ringing sound! thanks for including him. It's also interesting to hear so clearly how one vowel sound can radically color the voice - and not always successfully.

This of course is just a sample of some of the worlds greatest tenors singing 'Amor Ti Vieta'. The aria is short and sweet, but allows the tenor to show great passion in their interpretation, regardless of the type of voice of the tenor. Appreciate you constructive comments.

I heard Donald Smith sing in Trovatore in the Melbourne Palais! Loris Elms was in the same production. He was truly great. The best ever Australian tenor by far! What a singer!

Donald Smith was a revelation, the first five are the gold standard, it doesn't get any better, Corelli, Gigli, Bjorling, MDM, they can't even top each other. Though the Pavarotti version was nothing to sneeze at either.

Thanks for the very complimentary comment on this video. There are of course many other great tenors on the wold stage that one could choose from; These are just a few of my favourites, especially Donald Smith. This great Australian tenor (Dr Donald Sydney Smith OBE), had a wonderful career spanning over 50 years as a professional opera singer. Although having suffered a stroke in his late 60's, he recovered sufficiently to still be singing and performing, well into his 70's, before is death at age 78. On one such occasion Donald performed outdoors at the Piazza Venue at World Expo 88. Incredibly, although still unable to walk unassisted, or speak clearly, (he sounded like he had been drinking), he was nevertheless still able to produce his magnificent sound with much of his former power, clarity and emotion.

Thanks for your comment. Absolutely nothing wrong with your untrained ear. Donald Smith OBE was arguably the greatest tenor voice, that Australia produced in the twentieth century. His operatic career spanned a period of over 50 years. He performed mostly in England and Australia, (where he had an almost pop culture following), with some performances in Canada and Mexico. Although offered many times to expand his career to include the USA, (the Met), he was happy to remain within the confines of his homeland. Donald will be particularly remembered for his work with the Verdian and Puccini operatic tenor roles, and of course his portrayal of Canio in Pagliacci. All great tenor voices, mix of Dramatic, Spinto and Lyric for me Bjorling, Gigli, Corelli, but if pushed to select one Bjorling, effortless singing, great technique, honey toned voice, emotional performance, combines best of lyric and spinto tenors in a unique voice.

This is just beautiful! Every tenor had something wonderful to offer. I am more partial to the "bel canto" tenors like Gigli, Bjorling, Schipa, di Stefano and Pavarotti (I consider him the last of the bel canto tenors) among a few others, but they are all just beautiful :)

Do you really believe Blake, Brownlee or Flórez are not belcantist singers? By the way, just because of that I almost (I do like Del Monaco's rendition) totally disagree with you having into account that this is a verista opera. For me, Kauffmann's rendition is the best, the most elegant of all in here (I have listened to a very beautiful one by Domingo in KZbin), mainly because he does not abuse of glissandi (strizzati?)
