On May 23, 2000, teens Elizabeth "Liz" Reiser and Brandi Hicks went down to the local video store in New Philadelphia, Ohio to rent a movie. While there, they met a man who told them he had no way to get home and would pay them $20 if they would give him a ride. Both girls believed in helping their fellow human, so they agreed after a bit of hesitation. What began as a routine act of charity quickly spiralled out of control, resulting in the murder of Liz Reiser and the attempted rape and attempted murder of Brandi Hicks by the man they had intended to help, Mathew Vaca. The crimes committed against Reiser and Hicks were brutal and sent shockwaves through the small Ohio community.

I lived very near this area and was a junior in high school when this happened. What an incredible tragedy! I love your podcast and appreciate the way you both honor the families and victims. Now I have to send a correction. Everyone in the area has to learn to pronounce it as some point in their lives Lol. Tuscarawas is Tusk-uh-raw-wus. Keep up the great work ladies!

I was listening to it and every time she said tusk-scare-ra-was, I giggled…. And this is about a murder! Lol. But I’m from Stark County and we always did our shopping in New Philly.

It’s never too late to NOT KILL A CHILD. Poor sweet Liz. Thank god he was an IDIOT! I’ll pray for sweet Brandi, she out-smarted her attempted killer: Had the will to live!!! Thank GOD he didn’t check her for a pulse. Omg.

I am sure it killed her parents to never get a answer as to why this man brutally and maliciously murdered their teenage daughter. That isn't something you just up and do one day out of the blue. That takes urges, thoughts, fantasies, contemplating. The fact he had a gun, and knife, made sure to bind them and separate them and try to off them individually??!?! That's not an overnight random urge or a "I don't know why I did that" Like Yooooo! I am glad someone in that courthouse gave him a reality check on how prison treats people who hurt kids, let alone do the unspeakable stuff he did to Brandy and Liz. Brandy has got to be one of the toughest women alive not to let a night that nearly ended her life, multiple times, in multiple super traumatizing ways ruin the rest of her life. My God. I would never be able to forgive someone who did that to me... When you went on about how he tried to snap her neck, after violating her multiple times, and strangling her... I stopped everything I was doing and just sat there slack jawed in speechless 'Awh'

I'm sad Brandi's friend Liz was killed. I couldn't imagine if something happened to my sweetheart sister Savannah. I wouldn't want to be alive if my sister wasn't.

Oof this gave me flashbacks of growing up in Roman Catholicism, what Brandi said in court, I’m so upset her mom said that. “Forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” Muttered that every Sunday for far too long. Yeah, you guys were polite about it, but I won’t be. That’s utter bullshוt, and any deity whose forgiveness (for what, cheating on a math test?? They were in high school!!) is conditional on forgiving their RAP|ST and attempted murderer is not a loving or benevolent god.
