I just got one of these, and the neck is pretty much perfect. The bass is very light also, must be over a kilo lighter than my Chinese Fender Jazz bass. Good point about the color tho, it's a bit too dark now that I paid more attention to it. A lot darker than my 40 year old Washburn's maple neck...

I'm a guitar player first and Bass player second. After trying many options at my local guitar store, I fell in love with the neck profile of this model. As all new guitars, it needed a setup out of the box. After that, it played beautifully, no problems with any frets. But that is the thing with Squire, the QC is not a 100% good. I'm thinking of swapping the bridge for a Fender high mass bridge.

The spray tan issue is a personal thing totally on you half the video is you complaining about the color of the neck some of us don't mind it the fret issue is real you have 2 options fix it or send it back but please stop it sounds like whining
@keithavarney170

Oh - I excel at whining! The look is totally subjective. My '94 p-bass has aged naturally. Not quite as orange as this bass. I know I should have sent this one back with the neck issues. I'm stubborn. Thought I could just fix it up in an afternoon. I was very wrong. Another good example of why getting to play one before you buy it is the way to go. Thanks for the comment!

I bought mine in May 2020 at Tho in Germany. Had the same issues with the sting action, intonation and neck relief when it was delivered. But it took me just 10 minutes to fix this. And now I have a wonderful, easily playable P-bass. After replacing the PU with Geezer-Butlers from EMG, it really really sounds great. So, if you buy an string instrument by mail order you should be aware that some settings might to be improved. Now, it is the best instrument I ever bought withought testing it before by myself.

Your 28 year old P-Bass didn’t spend 40 years playing in smoke filled clubs and homes, nearly everyone smoked in the 70s and 80s so it’s not uncommon to find examples where the necks are that color, there are several on Reverb right now. So I’m assuming that’s the look they were going for, and personally I’d rather have that than a completely untinted neck; bright white maple necks just scream cheap Asian import

Oh yeah, man! My amps used to STINK of stale cigarette smoke. It was just a bit darker than I was hoping for. Color perception can be a bit subjective. Honestly, that wasn't the big problem with this bass; I can live with the color. Bad frets though...

I've gotten a lot of comments (below) from people who have ordered this model and had no issues at all. If you can find one at a local music store, or even have a local store order one, you can try it out before committing. And, for the most part, if you get one that has issues, you should be able to return it. Just be aware of the return policy from wherever you order it from. Best of luck!

They “tint the neck” because it was, in fact, tinted in the 70’s 😉
@keithavarney170

@@peadookie Okay… been searching around the web and I can’t find anything that says that necks (Fender in particular) were tinted in the 70s. I found lots of info about different types of finishes causing the natural wood finish to age faster. Experienced this myself with a 1994 P-Bass that has aged… gracefully. If the necks were “in fact” tinted in the 70s, I’m going to need some reference to back that up with. I’ll be the first to raise my hand up and say “that’s the way it was” if I see some evidence. Unfortunately, everything I see is on forums, where people pretty much say whatever they want. Fender also has nothing to say on historical tinting in this article: www.fender.com/articles/behind-the-scenes/the-science-and-style-of-finishes Here are a few other links I found on the subject. Absolutely nothing definitive in there 😁 www.tdpri.com/threads/old-fender-necks-were-they-tinted-to-begin-with.69955/ www.strat-talk.com/threads/natural-finish-on-neck-and-bodies-yellowing-coloring-with-age.565324/ Please do let me know if you find any information about Fender tinting necks in the 70s 👍

Yeah - it seems the quality for this model varies quite a bit. Had a few people comment that they got good ones. I think it is interesting that some people believe that bad frets are acceptable for the price. I wonder how the people at Squier would respond to that. I suppose if poor fretwork is acceptable then it should be listed on the product specs, right 😀 Mine is sitting in a case right now waiting for me to fix the frets. I really, really should have returned it. And, similarly, my less than $200 Affinity PJ is a better bass at the moment. Thanks for the comment!
