This video is about my saga trying to fix my old (1988) Carvin SX-100 guitar amp with an annoying buzz. It sounded like a blown speaker but was it? I've been working at solving this for about 1 month and bought 2 different speakers.
I also test 3 different 12" guitar speakers: the original factory Carvin "Vintage" VL12 (100 watts RMS, Eminence, made in USA), a 5 Core SP12135 (100 watts RMS, made in India) and an Electro-Harmonix 12VR8 (75 watts RMS, made in China). Do any of them cause buzzing? Or did my stupid simple fix work?
NOTE: I am not a pro lead guitar player. I'm a rhythm player and lead vocalist. Any comments like "your guitar playing sux" will be taken down. It's irrelevant to the video. This is more of a problem solving and illustration adventure.
I am not sponsored or compensated by anyone. I'm just an older dude playing with toys.

From an old gal to an old guy: No, you're not an idiot. It would have taken me quite some time and depair to find the source of the problem. I mean, a broken nut??? Never heard of that before. But the fact that the speaker functioned perfectly when hooked up to your stereo rig should have rung a bell (didn't with me either). However, you fixed it, that's the main thing. As to the speakers, I liked the original one best. It had the trebles needed to make a guitar sing, the other two sounded rather dull in comparison (of course, YT-compression plus my own rig -- not HiFi -- might have influenced what I heard). Also, though off-topic, I like that you are searching for rather clean sounds. There are those who stack 2 or 3 overdrive pedals -- shudder! So thank you for using the opportunity to show us three different speakers, it was very interesting. Cheers!

Thanks for the good words. Yeah the solution was sure obscure since all of the chassis nuts "felt" like they were gripping OK. I think the Carvin speaker benefits greatly from having "loosened up" over time. The E-H speaker was very crisp but reasonably balanced and, being new, would certainly do better with some playing time. If I had a tone generator I could have run some sweeps for 2 hours that would have helped both the E-H and 5 Core sound less brittle. But they weren't bad for $45 and $33 respectively. :D
