Thanks for watching the very first video of the electronics brewery.
In this video i'll be benchmarking a IRS2092 chip based class D amplifier which is rated at 500W into 4ohms. I apologize if the video is a bit messy and my English skills aren't great. It will probably improve when i make some more video's in the near future.
The equipment i use is a 0 - 90V balanced power supply, a clamp Amp meter, 2 x 500w/8ohm dummy load,a sinewave generator at 1KHz, a oscilloscope to monitor the sinewave on the output of the amp and finally ohm's law to calculate the actual output power.
If you have any questions or positive comments,please post them below.
If you like me to test more boards in the future, please support me by buying me a cup of coffee. Thanks a lot and hope to see you soon.

The irs2092s and the power mosfets wich are 200v 30A ones support the 2x100v supply but you have to keep in mind that you have a small buck converter (xl7005a- 80v max supply voltage )on the board for the fan and the vcc+ for the irs2092s and if you go past 2x65v the risk of blowing the converter up wich kills the irs2092s is high. I blowed up 2-3 boards becouse Of this untill i realised that the buck converter has limitations , but you can desolder the regulator and feed 12v to the 12v rail and than you can go up to 2x90vdc safely.

I tested two of these amps first amp at +-95V and the second one exactly at 101V First amp at 95V - 2h continuous runtime at full power which i measured 11A which is 484W at 4ohms handeld just fine so i extended that runtime to one full day 24h and no problems, no overheating, THD i set to around 1% and survived. But the second one fried itself within 15 minutes but i've got 520W out of it at 11.4A so you should not really exceed that 100V maximum threshold voltage. later that weekend i tested the first one at 99V and i've got 11.1 which is AAAAALMOST 500W just a few watts shy. 24h no problem at max power so at 100V it can deliver exactly 500W but this is the absolute maximum and you should leave a bit of space for voltage fluctuations because when you set the voltage or you have voltage exactly matching 99 or 100V it could spike above 101V and you fry that amp instantly if the voltage spike is happen to be above 101V.

The output of an audio amp is obviously alternating current, this can be measured by an average power and peak power. Measuring the DC input will only get you close to the average power, the peak envelope power will be much more! Please measure the power using the oscilloscope, get the peak to peak voltage (just before distortion), divide by 2 for the peak voltage, square the result, then divide by the load impedance. This will give you the peak power which is so much higher you will be surprised! Using this amp and + - 70v you can easily get 600w of peak power. I have several of these amps and they work just fine as advertised. Good video and presentation, complements from Chris. UK

Thanks Chris for your reply. I actually did measure the AC output current that's running through my dummy load. Also i used a true RMS clamp meter to do so. Wouldn't this give the same result as using the methode you suggested ?
@TheTemporalAnomaly
@TheTemporalAnomaly 3 жыл бұрын
@@ptaudio No, the RMS value will always be around 1.414 x less than the peak value. The only way to measure the true peak value without (very) expensive instruments, is with a scope using the method I described. Just give it a try both ways and you will see the difference. There are many technical papers on the subject of measuring peak vs average (RMS) power. With a non-constant envelope signal such as an audio waveform, its the peak value we are interested in. It is worth noting however, that the `loudness` of an audio signal is best represented by the average power level, RMS. If you have an amp rated at 500w RMS then that same power level can be expressed as 707w peak (500 x 1.414 = 707) It`s just a jungle of terms but we do need to understand them all and how to measure them effectively. You can also measure the peak voltage on the load by using a half wave rectifier and capacitor with a high impedance voltmeter, but this method is redundant if you have a scope. Best regards, Chris.

@@ptaudio I`m sorry to have opened a can of worms so to speak. If you want the RMS power, then a good approximation would be (as you have demonstrated,) equal to the dc input minus the the inefficiency. Or RMS volts squared divided by load impedance. In no way do I mean to criticize your work, it`s just that I work with radio frequency amplifiers where you are interested in peak envelope power for most calculations and specifications. My comments were just really for interest to indicate the rather large difference between the average and peak envelope power of an amplifier. It is easy on these comments to come across as aggressively criticizing a creator, this is in no way what I intended or wanted. Best regards, Chris.

I would love to have a series of these. I have bought a bunch of TDA7498E amps. Based on the board quality.. and the components used. I am sticking to two brands out of the 6 different companies I've purchased. I will be using it in my car.. and I will need 8 channels. I've also decided to use a DSP developer board to bring it all together via Sigma Studio. Here is my issue.. power... and I've never done anything like this. My theory is based on the little I know. Lol The TDA7498E are boards that work up to 36v .. they are rated 160w per channel or 220w Bridged. You are 1000% correct... although I can find the boards at a decent price... the power supplies are ridiculous! To get 500w from 36v is like looking for a unicorn. Specially when you are boosting from 12v. This journey showed me why standard car amps are so expensive. The reason for me doing this is for control and to hide all the components. Then there is the bit about cooling, and another bit about power... then you have all the other issues like.. signal gain.. and all these other issues that come up when putting a sound system together. 🙄 Lol what I am say is... please do all the things I need to do before I so it so I can do it right the first time! Lol

using clamp meter to measure current on the speaker is not a good idea. I think you might make a voltage pic measurement, or alternative measurement on a 50HZ or 60hz frequency on the dummy load. Also, you seems to run the test with 1khz tone, wich is not perfect for a clamp meter measurement. A power measurement is made by reading RMS or max voltage on a dummy load.

Good informative clip...but some question what has been asked here and what is worth paying attention to. First and perhaps most important. Maybe this question - why the seller recommends a supply voltage of + -70V? They use a wide variety of components. Those who have received this module with Infineon MosFETs could be VERY, VERY happy because 90% of these modules is made much poorer and older MosFets suitable for DC-DC converters and these are very cheap but final price (for module) is same. There is also other question - is these Infineon IPP is genuine? For example - I got same module ~15€ for IRFB41xx MosFETs (only 150V and low current capacity too). But I bought new and better SUP MosFETs. And there is also other thing, XL7005 Buck converter (U2 ic) which allow to 80V operation voltage, therefore, it is also recommended to use not more than 70V. In addition to everything +-70V is more than enought to get 500W in REAL MUSIC power (not to be confused with a pure sine signal). This test at +-90V is very good, seems like this other weak parts withstands this voltages (quess, how long?) and 400W with pure sine...how many W is equal music power? I suggest that at this supply voltage far above 1k (if we talk REAL MUSIC power watts). Here is some Behringer INuke amps (they are 2 IRS20957 [almost same as IRS2092] bridged circuit i.e. 2chip+4 IRFB4227 FETs per channel and +-85V supply and output ~800 W measured). This IRS2092 module is not best construction and there may be some faults which the buyer should check, for example R13 (in many cases there is too low value R13 and need to replaced to 3.01k), 10R 2010 is also better to replace to bigger 2512 but this 2010 works too if you dont short it. Output inductor is also a compromise, little bit small, 137-2 is better to use or for example some Sagami or Coiltronics inductors.

You have raised some very good points. I have made a comment about the average vs music power question. Dated 11th Aug 2021 if you want to have a look. I call it average vs peak envelope power. You asked how do you estimate music power from average power, well its a bit of an approximation, but you could say music power = average power x 1.414. It will get you in the ballpark. + and - 70v will easily get you 600 watts (peak or music power) into 4 ohms with this amp!

@@TheTemporalAnomaly Not sure where you came up with that 1.4 number. That has nothing to do with anything. Maybe your thinking of the difference between AC RMS voltage and peak to peak voltage. To get peak to peak voltage from an RMS voltage you multiply by 1.4xxx. That doesnt have anything to do with the output power of this amp. Output power is measured in watts RMS, that is the standard that's used. "Musical" power which is called dynamic power is dependent on the power supply. The amount of bulk storage electrolytic capacitance is primarily what determines how much dynamic power an amplifier has. And it's a pretty useless number as you will only get that power for a very short period of time (like 1-2 seconds).

Hello, the board is only 250W @ 4 ohms maximum. Chinese manufacturers have difficulty understanding that two 250W channels operating in bridge are needed to provide 500W of power. This board is based on the electronic schematic of IRAUDAMP7S, but resistors R13 (100R) and R15 (130k) appear in the diagram with different values, R7 (3.01k) and R8 (120k).

The Fluke 335A is only accurate at 50 to 60Hz. The errors are likely to be significant at 1KHz. Looking at it another way, if the power supply is +/- 65V then you should be able to get an output swing of about 120Vpp, or 60V peak. 60V peak into 4 ohms is 60^2/4/2 = 450 watts average, not peak. The numbers are not adding up. Running at higher voltage will dramatically increase the power dissipation in the transistors and output filter inductor, possibly leading to overheating and failure.

Considering the transients generated by all class D power amps, it IS risky to go above +/-70Vdc; the on-board XL7005A switchmode regulator (for the processing part of the IRS2092 and/or the fan?) has an absolute max of 80Vdc, and so do the main filter caps on the sample used (mine have 100V caps). Failure rates rise quickly even below these ratings. In this comparison, using a sine wave that looks more like a rounded bent triangle, taking the "max" power substantially below where clipping is apparent, using a nominal 4 Ohm load but not measuring it accurately, not allowing for measurement accuracy at the test frequency, having long thin power supply wiring, having no extra caps at the PCB (etc), the measurement values are not very meaningful; BUT it is still a very useful (and appreciated) post, indicating that at least some samples don't blow up above their maximum ratings. Does anyone have a schematic including the protection circuit, XL7005A and fan?

Eu adorei o teste!
@diogotjsrecife
@diogotjsrecife Жыл бұрын
Bora lá kk Falou besteira, mas não é problema. Potência é P=I (corrente) x V (tensão).

But the power supply runs Hot. roughly bout the same heat as 2 100 watt light bulbs so I need a fan on the power resistors. Calculated power draw from the plug is 1.17 Amps. Its a Power Amp chip made by Infinion. I think its an American company. So far I'm impressed. I can plug a guitar right into the input no preamp needed. But it needs a volume control. My ears are still ringing. The PS is just a full wave bridge rectifier plugged into 117VAC wall plug, then DC is divided by 2 100watt 50 ohm resistors screwed down to a large heat sink, and filtered by 2 1000uf 100v caps. 100 watts is all Im after so I may add another 10 or 20 ohms to the resistor divider for less heat.

I never trust the ratings on most Chinese made amps, just shoot for about a half to a quarter of what it says, but for the price, hell back in the late 90's I paid almost $200 for a Rockford Fosgate Punch 250a2 that put out similar numbers and was the size of Buick. Get a cheap computer server power supply and rock on.

I bought one of these IRS2092s recently from Ebay, in part because you can never trust the output ratings. They lie so much. I only want 100 watts/ 8 ohms, mono peak for a subwoofer at 50 volts and I figure this amp might get me there.

in my such amplifier, capacitors are installed at 63 volts, if there is a desire to increase the power of the amplifier, use a condesator + 30% of the voltage. If the power supply is 90 volts ( + / - ) , then the nominal value of the capacitor is 120 volts .

you have a valid point. i checked the specifications of this regulator. The maximum input voltage is 80V. It's directly connected to the powersupply on the amp board. So in this case the maximum voltage allowed on this amp is 80V. Thanks for the comment.

@@ptaudio even this 80V is too much but this is pretty good that this chip survives even this 90V i wouldn't have dared to try it but now i know it can withstand more :D. Well, in fact, you can remove this chip from there and change things, then this module can withstand 100V as well but there is then better solution to deal with IRS2092

@@ptaudio I don't have the schematic, but it should be a SOIC8, maybe U2. Putting a Zener in series with VIN pin (Pin1) could simply reduce the incoming voltage to the XL7005. Since there is almost no current power rating is not critical. What do you think? The electrolites are rated 100V if I'm right, so this way we can easily and safely extend the limits.
