I am from Australia and you have some of my favourite salamander species, the northern red salamander, long-tailed (cave) salamander and tiger salamander (barred and blotched/western). The only salamander legal in my country is the axolotl, as you know they are a species that rarely metamorphose. You put a lot of effort into your setups. It is interesting how the red and long-tailed have almost identical skin patterns. The blotched/western tiger salamander at 18:25 is begging for a meal. And yes, that is one slimy salamander at 29:42, do not pick it up as it's slime will harden on your skin.

Oh yeah, about the algae in the siren’s tank (perhaps you know this stuff already) - but some people say that if there’s algae, then there aren’t nearly enough plants in the tank! Lol, That’s debatable…bc like you said, water changes are key, so it goes both ways. And you definitely have FAR more plants than the average hobbyist. I always did fifty percent water changes weekly. But I also wanted the dirty fish water on my plants outside. So you could try floating or hanging cuttings of pothos (Epipremnum sp.), heartleaf philodendrons (P. hederaceum, ‘micans’, ‘Neon’, ‘Brazil’ etc.) and ‘wandering Jew’ (Tradescantia, Callisia repens, etc.) on the side, hanging out of the tank or laying on top of the glass, roots submerged. Also spider plants (Chlorophytum), smaller varieties of Monstera and peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) do great with their roots submerged and they can be trimmed anytime, no harm. More just grow! there are surface plants, they’re great at battling algae over time. I mean, like other than duckweed…ha, I say “other than duckweed” (I’m not against it, although it can get crazy), but that giant duckweed is kinda cool. And easier to control. There’s salvinia, Amazon frogbit, dwarf water lettuce, red root floater. I prefer frogbit & salvinia. You can make or buy one of those hoops o from plastic tubing, to corral it in place and prevent light blockage. Those roots suck up excess nutrients faster with the leaves exposed to the fresh air.

Some great ideas, appreciate it! The algae comes and goes. I really think it’s the high silica levels because of the sand, but so hard to pinpoint

On the tank with the drip wall… if you don’t wanna tear the whole thing apart, you could probably just grow aquarium plants. Things like Anubias, Java fern, and aquatic mosses will all grow above the waters surface in environment like that as long as it stays moist (which doesn’t seem to be a problem in that tank haha). Java moss, riccia, marsh mermaid, and most aquarium stem plants will all do great. Take a look at some “wabi kusa” videos… any of the plants used in wabi kusa will grow partially submerged.
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. I’ve actually got several plants that you mention in there now. I think the biggest issue is usually Cyanobacteria in these smaller systems despite how well you tend them. I appreciate the info and suggestions and may try a few of the plants you highlighted!

I adore your setups, wow. Where do you get all your species?

Mainly breeders. Some super common species were collected as eggs or juveniles and then some people were rehoming pets that couldn’t take good care of them. Mainly breeders though

Those underwater food bowls look great - not seen anyone ask this question so thought I’d ask, do the blackworm or tubifex propagate naturally in them as they all seem to be brimming over with them? Any tips? Many thanks, and lovely setups!
@slitheringsalamanderscapes68872 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m not sure to be honest. I know they can live in the setups for a long time. A long time ago I had a tank just for black worms. I would stir up the gravel and it would break the worms into pieces and they would multiply over time. Many people had good success doing that to cultivate them. I did as well, but it was a ton of maintenance and I ultimately decided the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze

Looks great. I am interested in upgrading my mavortium (barred) setup myself, and I must say I very confused in your design for your barred tiger setup. Out of all salamanders native to the US, barred tigers occupy some of the driest regions of the country, through the great plains and into the southwest, mostly spending their time in deep burrows and really only going to true bodies of water for a few weeks to breed in the spring. I don't deny that your barred are certainly healthy, just wondering why you went with such an aquatic setup with minimal deep burrowing substrate, given they burrow more than they are in water naturally? Again, it all looks great and they look healthy as can be; and as you said, if it spends its time in water by choice, why deprive it. I am just curious?
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 Жыл бұрын
Good question. When I got them they were still morphing to adults, which was the reason for the water areas. The substrate layer is actually about 8 inches deep, so pretty significant. It’s difficult to tell just from the front view of the tank. I’ve considered moving them into a different enclosure like I did for my blotched tigers (all terrestrial), but they just seem to thrive in this. I will eventually get them into a larger terrestrial likely though. The water feature is a pain and would be much easier and less maintenance for an all terrestrial enclosure at some point.

I don’t. If you are trying to breed them then they would need a breeding take w adjusted temps etc.

@@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 would a rain chamber work well for breeding ? I love the scapes and just trying to get ideas for best enclosure possible.
@slitheringsalamanderscapes68872 жыл бұрын
@@YouCrackedIt thanks! Not sure you would need a rain chamber. Breeding fir must lungless, just need a little bit if water in the tank. For tigers it’s more complex and usually need a large water area with structure (branches etc) and need to decrease temps a bit. I don’t really try to breed my animals, but if it happens cool

Would eastern newts be a good starter species?
@slitheringsalamanderscapes68872 жыл бұрын
Their setup is pretty simple. Good clean cool water with some areas for them to get out. I’ve had mixed results keeping them. Some are very hardy and eat well, but I’ve had several that were very finicky eaters and it was a struggle to make sure they stayed at a healthy size. I’d say, at least from my experience that they are for intermediate keepers. Some beginners have good experiences with them as pets, but in my experience they were bit tougher and more involved to keep.
@Tau_Aquila2 жыл бұрын
I'd say some of the European species would be a better starter species but Eastern newts aren't too bad.
