"We're in the middle of a long hallway...." "And this hallway gives way to... another long hallway...." "Here on the 5th floor we find ourselves at the very end of another long hallway..." And finally, here's a bit of recap of using amps live, filmed in yet another... hallway. All of us in churches know that circles are better than rows. We've hard it many times before. But here at Shades Mountain, we prefer many circular hallways. It's the only way to do life together. And thank you Two Notes! You've made my tone dreams come true!

I've spent a lot of years building, repairing and hot rodding tube amps for guitarists. On my work bench is a little home built non-inductive load made up of four 4Ω resistors that let me create amplifier loads at 4Ω, 8Ω, and 16Ω. This covers pretty much every speaker cabinet I have ever worked on. I tried inductive (wire wound) resistor originally and while they worked, I often found that setting up the amp, especially at high volume with the inductive load often resulted in less satisfactory results when the amp was then paired with its real speaker cabinet(s). My experience has been that it is the combination of the amplifier and the speakers that the guitarists I have worked with love. It sounds like the Captor X does a good job of speaker modeling which is great but when the player is standing on stage listening to a Marshall head stacked on a pair of cabinets, there are 8 speakers involved and there is some sonic interaction between them that is also part of the mix. I doubt that we'll ever get to a place where modeling satisfies everyone. Sound like life is analog with infinite variability and there will always be someone who can't tell you exactly why the digital version doesn't sound quite right. I have theorized for years it has to do with the missing information between samples. Even when sample rates are high enough that our conscious minds can't tell the difference, our brains still have the capacity to sense something is amiss. Great video.

Hey Brian! Church-In-A-Box here. We rent a banquet room in a resort hotel overlooking the Pacific Ocean every Sunday morning. Load in, setup, rehears four songs, Play, sermon, outro, pack it down, load it out. A privilege. Played bass for this for two years, primarily a guitar player. Took over the guitar role two Sundays ago. Ran my Helix into FOH and wedges in rehearsal, no problem. Service starts, hit the first chord... and nothing. Played the balance from "muscle-memory". Back to a Deluxe and a few pedals from here on.

This is fantastic! Real amps are fun and the captor x does an amazing job. I attached my captor to the back of my victory head with dual lock and zip ties. Just plug it in and I'm good to go. That's my Pro tip to make setup easier for those who don't leave their amps at church.

For a number of years, I’ve been using a Blackstar HT Venue mkII 40 watt amp along with a TC electronics plethora X5 for FX. After watching your videos, I decided to buy a quad cortex and have been using it for about a year. I love it capabilities, but I do miss the SAG you get from a live amp. This last Sunday I used your new victory copper 35 capture and I am loving it! Thank you for your contributions to the worship community

We are so different; I've never played live without an amp. Playing direct would ruin the magic of the interaction between the player, guitar, and amp, killing all inspiration and resulting in a lifeless, emotionless performance for me. I do have a Captor X I use to feed front of house. I wish I had an amp setup at church I didn't have to transport back and forth. Great video!

I use a small pedal board into a Matchless Lightning on Sundays! Loud enough for me to hear it on stage and mic'd with an SM57. None of our guitarists get too worked up about analog vs. digital, but we were all happy I happened to be the one serving a few weeks ago when the power to our mixer went down and we finished out a song with only the sound from my amp and the drummer! It was a great moment of worship for everyone and a fun, chaotic moment for the band.

I appreciate this video Brian! It resonates with my heart concerning the value we should place on achieving the best tone possible for our playing situations, environments and inspirationally as well; it's worth the effort to do so and to achieve exactly what we strive for;) After owning/using the Fractal Audio AX8, Kemper Stage, Quad Cortex, Line6 Helix, Atomic Amplifire modelers/profilers both on a stage and in a studio environment I personally find the dynamic characteristics and tonal bliss from either a tube preamp pedal e.g. Kingsley/Friedman IR-X or tube amplifier are better, much better really IMHO. I understand though that the convenience of carrying an amp modeler and combined pedalboard, that can sound very good, and as opposed to toting a hefty amplifier to church is much more appealing. But, with a tube amp properly mic'd or a direct signal sent to FOH via a device like a UA Ox Box/Captor X, the sound generated/produced by genuine tubes is undeniably the purest sound you can achieve from your guitar and what modelers attempt to do digitally. This certainly is all subjective and I get that but, for me personally and after researching and trying all the trending devices and then designing several tube preamp-based pedalboards over the past 12yrs...this has become my honest evaluation. My amp of choice is a Mesa Boogies MKIV (w/ a UA Ox Box) and my direct solution is a Friedman IR-X tube preamp pedal with an UA Ox Stomp, these both yield the type of guitar tone I hope for, prefer and desire to replicate when playing in the studio, at church or any live venue. Thanks, John!

This is awesome. This past Sunday I rocked a Deluxe Reverb and a Plexi (20 watt) in stereo. I was using the restroom after the set and a guy in the stall next to me says "amazing tone dude". LOL! Anyway as always blessed content and inspired me to take my worship to 11. ;)

Captor X is such an AWESOME unit! You plug into an amp, it sounds great… I’ve spent countless hours dialling in digital modelers to sound good… All I needed was the Captor X for my amp that already sounds good… they are a no brainer…. I also prefer the captor x in my IEMs to a mic… Even when running a cab onstage. I feel that gets missed a lot in these type of videos. It’s not all about a silent stage. 👊🏻

The church I’ve been laying at for almost a year now hasn’t had the capabilities to use live amps (church is only 2years old and still growing) so I’ve been using the Tonex App on my phone with an iRig to go straight into the house. I recently got my own SM57 and convinced them to let me mic my AC15 w/ an alnico blue speaker. Jan 5th I get to use a live amp again and I’m super excited about it!

My home church has had great success with mic'd speaker cabs inside iso boxes in a back rack room. We have speaker cables running to stage, everyone brings their amp of choice (head or combo) and has them close by on stage to tweak as needed. Silent stage with great real amp sounds. Not terribly expensive or complicated, really versatile (we have about 4 different speakers to choose from, can run 2 in stereo).

Analog and digital are both great tools to have. I run a QC based pedalboard. I have patches set up with captures of amps and patched to run out to real amps when the church/venue permits. Two Notes is a great solution for live and studio use.

That sounds incredible! I use my pedalboard into two Tone X One’s in stereo and have never been happier. I’ve used tube amps mic’d in isolation for years and this is the closest I’ve come. I’d say Tone X is 98% of the way there. I have yet to try a tube amp with load box/IR yet though.

The funny thing is I listen to the samples here and it’s really not that different from what the WT guys have gotten with Tonex. Real amps are maybe wilder and more random in response and breakup which makes it more fun to play through I guess.

I'm currently using a pedalboard with tonex. I'd love to use an amp and did once: I had an Orange micro terror (20w) plus a cab in the cupboard miked up. The sound engineer was terrified the sound would escape into the adjoining rooms but it was just about okay. For one secular gig I had 2 amps on stage and used an Orange a/b pedal which has a both on option and a phase button.

I have used tube amps, a Helix stomp with a pedalboard, and now currently run an iridium with a pedalboard and for right now in terms of simplicity, ease of transport, and sound I can't see myself using anything else. At the end of the day if our hearts our in the right place, then it doesn't matter what gear we use as long as it sounds good to us and doesn't distract the congregation from worship or us from what we are doing

Awesome video Brian! Fun to see your journey on this video. I do want to point out that you are playing a $15,000-20,000 guitar rig in this video. I should sure hope it sounds great and “better” than a $1600 Helix and $2000 American Fender. I have rocked a helix for about 5 years now and bought a bunch of patches from WT. I would love to switch to pedals and tube amps but enjoy the luxury of trying different things and having flexibility. Having the Matchless flavor one weekend then switch up to Friedman is amazing when it isn’t a multi thousand dollar investment. It is also great to be able to “clone tones” as needed by throwing different pedals in your virtual rig and not having to go out and buy more stuff. Definitely don’t want to be a downer, but I’m a bit jealous for sure!

Sounded great in your IEM! I’ve been using my Helix LT with WT patches weekly at Revolution Church in North Atlanta with great results, as well as for the recording of our recent RevMusic album, “Just The Start”. I do, however, drag out my Dr.Z Maz Jr., Vox AC 10 or ‘68 Fender Vibro Champ with a pedalboard for my trio gigs (clubs, corporate and events). Still love my amps, but the convenience, programmability and great sounds of Helix are hard to give up for weekly church services. 😊

Modelers are awesome! but... profilers and tube amps (I think) are where it's at. They all may sound similar, but there's also "feel" and how the amp reacts with effects. That's where (I think) that divide starts to get bigger.

I made the switch about three months ago from a real tube amp that was cranked off stage to using Tonex. It took me two months and a lot of time and money spent on amp downloads to be happy with it. I still think it's probably only about 80% as good. I do like the added flexibility of the digital amps tho. I also like being able to have the same amp sound but with multiple gain stages. Something most multi channel amps don't do well.

Running POD GO into Walrus Audio Canvas Stereo to FOH. I've run great amps mic'd and also direct (Palmer PDI-03). I enjoy affordability and portability of this rig. Everyone thinks it sounds amazing. I would say for a more roots oriented project (if I wanted to be Robben Ford for a day, ha) I'd prefer to a take a small board and run a Fender amp on stage. For church, I am good with the modeling approaching. For cost to value ratio, POD GO is hands down the winner. I've used Fractal before and loved it too.

As a big fan of tube amps, I could never limit tube amps on our church stage. I think the rule is actually a 2 amp minimum; if there is only one electric guitar, then he has to use 2 amps in stereo. If someone is using a Kemper; then there needs to be at least a Hammond and Leslie in use. However, i have just started experimenting with IRs.... Trying an amp through my old Badcat Unleash (with a dead SS amp in it -> direct out to delay, reverb into an IR Box. I haven't tried in church yet but might with them bass rig since we've been experimenting with no amp (low frequencies seem to get in the way of the FOH mix the most). I may try using my Tube bass head again with the Unleash and IR Box... Or just the compressor, preamp straight into the IR Box. We'll see how it works...

Thanks for the video. Glad to see good things at your church. I'm wondering what you think about effects loops on amps and the sound differences with and without using them. It seems like here you sent the pedal board (overdrives through to reverbs) all into the IR Captor amp sounds and then the amps. Do you keep the amps set quite clean to not distort your pedal effects? I'm looking into buying an amp for church and thinking about getting one with an effects loop in and out. I'm wondering how much difference they make to the sound.
@worshiptutorials
@worshiptutorials 2 ай бұрын
I never really use effects loops, for a couple reasons... 1. Most of the recorded tones on these albums are the sound of stereo effects all running into amps. The reverbs and delays do a thing when they hit the amps, especially being pushed by gain, that is really cool, and a huge part of the sound on these recordings. 2. I prefer to run reverbs and delays in stereo, and most effects loops only allow mono. 3. The amps are kept fairly clean, or right on the edge of breakup. For a higher gain amplifier, you'd definitely want to use an effects loop (we showed that off in our Friedman BE100 Deluxe amp demo) If you're planning to run a single amp, and you really want the effects placed after the preamp section of the amplifier, then the effects loop is what you'd want - or if you use something like a captor, you can just place your modulation and wet effects after the captor - putting them after the amp/cab in the signal chain, which would also allow you to use stereo effects with a single amplifier.

Been listening to digital amps lately and real amps does something inside my chest in terms of its low-mid roar that I can't feel with digital. Edited. - I usually and love going direct with my digital amps cause I love stereo then our MD suggests that I should go mono with a mic'd amp. First, I was hesitant and kinda felt disheartened of going mono. But God whispered, "submit to your leader." FF, during rehearsal the air that the amps breathe is just unexplainable and very diff. using an amp sim. I love my setup now. I hope to go stereo with two amps someday.

I can’t come close to that with either my helix or fractal FM9 turbo. FOH hates amps. The only reason I was able to use the Swart was we were playing in a hugh auditorium with no way to feed the board from my helix. I’m switching to the two notes preamp with IRs direct to FOH.

I play every sunday and have mic'd my fender supersonic 22 for forever. The last 6 months I've used a nux solid studio direct with pretty good results, so I thought i'd upgrade to a two notes opus. haven't decided on setup yet - if I'll just use it as an amp sim with a good IR and continue using my pedals, or if I'll use the opus as the amp and just run a delay after. When I have been in the congregation at other churches I'd estimate 90% of the time the electric guitar is going through a modeler and sounds terrible: fizzy thin and anemic. Probably more to do with properly mixing and eq, but not impressed. BUT the other 10% sounds great direct. Such a challenge to get a good rich tube sound live without using a tube amp.

@@worshiptutorials the best advice! Quality amp techs are hard to find and not having one can cost you dearly in more ways than just monetary. I've had a few bad ones and each of them came close to ruining mine.

Question, do you have to use an IR loader like the Captor X or could you use say use real amps into helix IR’s?
@worshiptutorials
@worshiptutorials 3 ай бұрын
You do need a load box of some kind to receive the load from the amplifier. The captor X is a load box with speaker modeling and IR’s built in. You could turn the cab modeling off and run the output of captor (or any load box) into helix and use the HX cab modeling. But if you took the speaker out of the amp and plugged it straight into Helix, you’d damage both the amp and Helix.

Spent most of my adult life as a pro player (and music industry guy) in SoCal; moved back home to Houston during the pandemic. I’ve gone back and forth between amps and modelers and really love both worlds. My wife is creative director at a megachurch here and a year ago I was running a Dirty Shirley 40w and 50w bass circuit Marshall in stereo with a huge pedalboard, and today I’m using the Quad Cortex with some added stompies in the front and loop. I’m sure I’ll go back to amps at some point just because. Haha One thing modelers can’t provide is the interaction between the pickups and the speaker, which gives us bloom/blossom/sustain. I once did a rock gig in LA with a strat and a clean Two Rock and the interaction-though clean-made it all feel exciting and aggressive. To fix that these days, I’m sending a direct capture out of outputs 3/4 to a Duncan Powerstage and stereo 1x12 cabs in front of me. They give me some low end body through the IEMs and allow me to lean forward and get some controlled feedback. Thanks for what y’all do. These videos keep me excited about gear after all these years.

Guitar into outboard overdrives into FX loop in helix on one line, from there out of the send to live amp, from amp to load box, load box into helix mic input and then wet effects, and IR then out to FOH \m/ Complicated ? yeah but i get the real amp with snapshots if i need them and its only a couple more patch cables

That’s great! Why not just use real speakers too? We use to bring real amps to my church about 5 years ago with amp boxes back stage. I am all for going back to real amps. Doing Tonex Captures now and every time I plug in a real amp to capture it, I wonder why we went to amp sims.

I'm keeping it simple for our small congregation with a squire strat straight into a miced fender Champion 100 Twin. I point my amp at my face like a monitor to lessen stage volume bleed out out to the congregation, but it's still plenty loud for those on stage. I really enjoy having a proper amp on stage and like having a little more control over my own stage level.

Amps are a FOH nightmare, especially in a church setting. I've stopped using amps long ago. WIll never go back. If you can mix a good wedge monitor, the entire interaction mumbo jumbo is null.

I took the time to listen to the livestream of one of the services. It sounds amazing; very professional. BUT…you don’t need $10k in gear to get there. Not even close. I didn’t hear anything in the full audio mix that can’t be done with a couple drives, a good modeler, and a good delay/reverb set up. The rig in this video is almost at satirical levels of P&W guitarists. Not a knock on you or the channel, but for the small church players, keep in mind, that rig is next level overkill and completely unnecessary. It’s crazy cool, but unnecessary nonetheless.

I agree with everything you’re saying here. In fact we make content that re-iterates it all the time. But the point of the video was not to say that you need a to invest in a 10k rig so you can sound 0.5% better. It was more to say if you love amps, play them. We say it all the time - play what inspires you. Whether it sounds significantly better than a different or more budget friendly rig, or whether people in the audience or congregation can tell or appreciate the difference is mostly irrelevant. Thanks for the kind words about the worship service 🙏🏻

Nah, he’s just being professional about what the team, MD, leader, and FOH needs. If you’re in a metal band, you can lug your half stack around as you wish. If you’re a team player, you happily meet the needs of the team. If you’re a pro, it doesn’t matter what you run through. You’re just not there for yourself. You’re there to get the thing done.
