There is only ONE requirement to receive Amrit: give your “head” (mind, body, wealth, etc) to the Guru. Everything else is just a byproduct of following hukam. As someone who received Khand Di Phaul (Amrit) on Vaisakhi 2017, I can tell you firsthand that it’s not easy, and being initiated into the Khalsa Panth is not the end, it’s just the beginning. Receiving Amrit is like getting Into a university, but then working towards a degree.

The Turbanator veeray i am going to take amrit on sunday for the second time, the first time was as a kid, didnt know anything, forced to take it by my family basically, made loads of mistakes, kurehats, the problem is i live in a city where there are no gurdwaras and i have to go to another city for the ceremony. Takes almost 4 hours to go there. So my question was, i panj pyaaray tell me to do sewa in gurdwara for a number of days, i am not going to be able to do it because its too far, is there any other punishment that they give people?

Thank you for reaching out to me veer Ji. Since Khand Di Phaul (“Amrit”) cannot be forced on someone, you technically never received it in the first place because you didn’t know what was happening and because you willingly didn’t commit to it. Just tell the Panj Pyare that this is your first time, because it technically is. As for the Gurdwara Seva, just let them know that it’s not an option for you because you live far away, and I am sure they will understand. Please keep me posted on what happens next!

Guruji used a faledi double edge khanda, which was 3 feet in length, nowadays khanda used are dull, how can we expect to be Singh’s, Guruji created Lions out of sparrows.. Jo James this is what I thought also but many years ago I took Amrit in India and the 5 Pyara were from the golden temple who conducted the ceremony. I was younger and there was a language barrier but I do remember someone asking when question were allowed and they said if you have to you can but make sure it’s not Halal meat. I think if I’m not wrong ultimately no life should be killed for our pleasure as a decent human being and Gursikh should take this into account however again if I’m not mistaken Guru Jee has ultimately left us with this decision with the goal of achieving vegetarianism. The next step would be veganism. I may be wrong because I’m shamefully not amritdhari myself.

It is wrong to eat as form of diet. Therefore no you cant eat meat unless its a last resort issue of survival . And under any extent you cant eat halal meat even in a survival issue. I may be wrong but im saying what ive been taught

Nitnem might be different. SGPC will usually say Jaapji Sahib, Jaap and Tav Prasad Savaiye but Hazur Sahib. Says Full Panj Bani. SGPC also might not do full Chalee Pauri of Anand Sahib, but do 6 Pauri and shorter Chaupai Sahib. Other differences I'm not sure.

Usually children take Choola, made by stirring a Kirpan in Water and Sugar Patase in a smaller iron Bata and only by One Amritdhari Singh. Some kids may take Khande Di Pahul (Amrit) but usually not and Choola is given to initiate the child as a Sikh who will one day join the Khalsa Panth.
