Amrita University’s Center for Women’s Empowerment & Gender Equality has been awarded a prestigious grant for its project, "Blue is the New Pink: Women Driving Sustainable Seaweed Cultivation and Climate Solutions." The project is supported by the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme, in collaboration with India’s Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Development Program. It will empower women in coastal communities near the Gulf of Mannar to lead in sustainable seaweed cultivation and marine conservation.
Focusing on the restoration of seagrass ecosystems, this initiative aims to support endangered species like dugongs, while promoting climate change resilience. By empowering women as champions of marine health, the project embodies a vision of socio-ecological balance and sustainable livelihoods.
