AMSONIA - Excellent Native Perennial - How to Grow & Care - Blue Star Plant

As I continue to add more native plants to my garden, one that I cannot get enough of is Amsonia. This North American native plant fills a wonderful niche in our garden, and is a high performing plant from season to season. In this video I speak primarily about Amsonia hubrichtii & A. tabernaemontana, which are the two most widely available species in my region. However, there are many more excellent species out there with different functions in the garden. That being said, many tend to prefer the same garden conditions as the ones I demonstrate with in this video.

What a nice plant, love that it is a native, and is beautiful thru the seasons. I’m in central NJ…this is a bit off topic but I remember last year Samantha picked your lillies to bring inside 😱 I love lillies and have quite a few, Oriental and Asiatic. This year for the first time they were heavily attacked and devoured by the pretty red but horrible Lilly beetle, gross things….did you have any problems with them? I hope you never get them 🤬 🌿 Thanks for the information on the Amsonia!

I love my Arkansas blue 💙 ⭐ Star. Im growing mine in SW Michigan.. the foliage reminds me of soft feathers... I always run in through my fingers ..

yep you can do so in the fall. cut the top growth back, dig it up and divide the clump

I have this plant and it does not grow vigorously maybe due to clay soil, had it since 2021 and last year was the first time it bloomed. I would like for it to spread to look a bit fuller. I have never pruned it but maybe this fall I will cut it back, thanks for the information.

Hmm is it in enough sunlight? Sometimes they may take a few years to get established

I love the way this looks! I'm in the middle of Minnesota, 3-4 zone. Will it be too cold for this to thrive here? I really like the tall one!

We have one of those plants in our yard and they produce a long seed pod can you take the seeds from there and grow some?

Thanks for subscribing! From my experience it is t fert that encourages them to bloom. It is primarily due to age of plant and providing dry conditions

Devin, I planted amsonia hubrichtii this spring- as I too love this plant. It appears healthy, but doesn't seem to have put on any significant growth this year- in spite of watering it and providing it a spot that satisfies the growing requirements. Are they a perennial that tends to follow that "year one sleeps" rule for perennials... ie: are they slow to establish?
