Amsterdam, is the capital of the Netherlands, has more than 100 kilometers of grachten, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the Grachtengordel. Alongside the main canals are 1550 monumental buildings.
The 17th century Canal Belt was placed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2011 and the medieval center of the city is undergoing an extensive renovation. On each canal there are historic, important or interesting sights. Read more as we describe the most important Amsterdam canals.
