Decennia lang reden ze met hoge snelheden door de stad: de Chevrolet ambulances. De gele wagens waren ongeveer 6 jaar oud en aan vervanging toe. De Chevrolet ambulances van Amsterdam zijn allemaal vervangen voor Mercedessen.
De wagens stonden bekend om het mooie en zware motorgeluid en door de rij-eigenschappen waren voor deze wagens geliefd onder chauffeurs.

Ik mis gewoon die geweldige V8-brom. Ze zien er niet alleen stoer en tijdloos uit, ik denk dat ze gewoon tot het klassieke straatbeeld en de cultuur behoren.

Beter dan een V8 klinkt het ook niet. Maar als je bij zo'n Chevy Van, achterin bij de motor moet sleutelen, dan moeten de voorstoelen en alle bekleding eruit om erbij te kunnen. Bij de Sprinter is het kap open en gaan. Desnoods de grill eruit maar dan is het gefixed.

Nou dat is waar. Qua onderhoudsgemak zijn de Sprinters over het algemeen misschien beter, ook wat betreft de levering van reserveonderdelen. Maar de Chevy is een ijzersterk apparaat. Hij is nu leverbaar met een 2.8 liter 4 cilinder dieselmotor met 178 pk. Het chassis met gesloten opbouw zou zeker niet oninteressant zijn als alternatief voor een VW T6.

Dat was een conversie die vlak voor ze uit dienst gingen doorgevoerd werd en ik nooit begrepen heb. Ze hadden daarvoor een lichtbak met echte zwaailichten en aan elke kant 1 of 2 stroboscopen in dezelfde lichtbak, twee halogeenflitsers aan elke zijkant, twee stroboscopen op de grille en een enorme stroboscoop op de achterkant. Die waren zowel overdag als 's nachts prima zichtbaar zonder te verblinden. Toen kwam die conversie en werd de zichtbaarheid overdag echt slecht. Bij duisternis vond ik het niet veel beter. Ik zal eerlijk zijn dat ik de huidige verlichting op het moderne spul van nu ook niets vind (veel te verblindend bij duisternis), maar ik heb de conversie van deze nooit begrepen.

actually less than a handful, although ive also witnessed one driving on 2 wheels for a second because they had to manouvre on a straight with cars parked on both sides. If I remember it right, the company that supplied these ambulances did something to the suspension and wheel-base to make them a bit more friendly when taking turns. But the clips you see are most likely Amsterdam paramedics. They are usually a bit more aggressive with driving compared to their colleagues from the 'countryside'. It's not that they're unsafe, they just have more experience with all the shitmoves people make in Amsterdam and how to react to them.

Besides (apparent) issues with stop/turn lights, it also served a second purpose: on arrival, ambulances will usually turn of their blues and turn on their hazards or orange flashing lights. When the doors at the back are opened, the standard turn signals are obscured from view, with the ones at the top making sure it's still visible to people coming up at the back that something's going on. I wouldn't be surprised if Dutch law even files this as mandatory for such vehicles.

Thing that in Europe (There is some exception, since in Sweden there is a Silverado, and in Switzerland, an E-450), most ambulances are based on vans.
