Ralph Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis | Amsterdam Sinfonietta

A psalm that composer Thomas Tallis wrote in 1567 served as the starting point for Ralph Vaughan Williams's Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis in 1910. This one-part fantasy reflects the desire for national identity that was unmistakably present in England in the early twentieth century. Because of the old church keys and spatial majestic chords, you never seem quite sure whether you are listening to something old or something new.

very solid. I almost wish it got a bit more romantic and expansive at times but there are also bits you really shouldn't do that, e.g. VW writes "in tempo", so on balance, nice. and great video. the more exposure of this piece the better.
