I was a huge fan of Raffaele Cecco's Hewson games. They always looked, played and moved better than most if the games on CPC. I never played this however and I've no idea why. Looking at it now, it looks great. Very accomplished. Reminds me a bit of Ghouls and Ghosts. In an alternate universe Hewson did the conversion of that game and we didn't get the crap version we got.

Oh my goodness, yes Ghouls N' Ghosts is rather pathetic isn't it? I mean... it's kinda playable as a 'game' and if you strip it of its name and licence it's an OK game on it's own, but as an official coin-op conversion it's embarrassing as an Amstrad owner! But yea, Raff is a coding genius! I just wish he'd done even more games!

Rafaelle Cecco was the master. This game drove me mad in the day - Might have got to level 3 once or twice - can't remember.

Stunning game. I just realised how phallic some of those pillars are (like the green one right at the start of the game)! I wonder if that was deliberate?

Ha! Only just noticed now myself, now you've mentioned it! Young male coders and graphic artists eh........

Dude I was scratching my head thinking I don't remember fairies and boobies in this game, then I realised it was Storm Warrior that I used to play. Would of much rather have played this back then! 😂 Awesome review mate 😁

Ha! Yes this is err significantly better than poor old Storm Warrior from Elite! IIRC that didn't even get a full price release.... just went straight to budget, almost like a film that they don't have confidence in releasing to cinemas and they shove it straight to DVD! And thank you mate!

I loved it on the CPC, remember trying it on the Amiga when I got one and it just didn't hit the same spot as the CPC, might have been the option for other games for the Amiga that was more fun platformers.

I know what you mean, it just didn't feel as fun and cartoony - it lost that 'vibe' for me.

All the versions are nice. About the soundtrack of the C64, Amiga and ST, the main composer though he was never credited is Johannes Bjerregaard, who was one of the founders of Maniacs of Noise. He wrote the Title music and the in game music. Jeroen Tel wrote the loading one. Unfortunately, Johannes Bjerregaard passed away recently. He was struggling with a cancer for several years. He also wrote most of the tracks of the great Flimbo's Quest, and is known for his works for the c64 demoscene.

Oh I'm sorry for miscrediting the the C64 music there and especially hearing the sad news there :( That's really unfortunate.

IIRC the AA caption was "The seedier side of Stormlord - spore's the pity". I don't think they were making any kind of moral judgement, just an odd seed pun. Probably gave it about two seconds' thought...

You have a fantastic memory, that is pretty much spot on the quote. I don't know whether they were or weren't making a moral judgement there or not, but they certainly relegated that to just a screen capture comment and avoided the issue completely in the review, not wanting to give it any attention at all. Probably wisely so, unsure of whether Hewson were doing it for seedy publicity or not.

There is a Oric homebrew version that is somewhat different . I personally rate c64 best due to the atmosphere/music.Well played.

Yea, I only found out about the Oric homebrew version after I completed the voice over and final edit - I did wonder if I should go and add it in before I did the final render but it was quite a recent port and very different gameplay wise so left it out in the end.

At 10:52, you jump over the trampoline to reach one of the fairies on level 2, which is the same technique used in other longplays for the CPC version. In fact, this is necessary due to a bug. On the ZX Spectrum and C64 versions, you collect this fairy by jumping on to the platform from the right - but on the CPC version, a skull is blocking this path, so you have no choice but to (very carefully) jump over the trampoline. CNGSoft's crack fixes this bug. Also, you must *surely* have capitulated and used an invulnerability cheat to record this longplay, right?! 🤔
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
I didn't know if it was a bug or not, or rather Raff just been particularly 'evil' because the Amstrad version seems to be a little harder than the other conversions with waves of enemies coming in a little sooner and being more vicious. But yea I had to watch other longplays because I struggled a little with the 'solution' posted on CPC-Power, and I suppose with level 4 for example you can tackle it in different ways. And no - no cheats were used here. Just many many hours and hours of redoing levels over and over and over again, with a bit of luck here and there!

Very disappointing that you get absolutely nothing for finishing it. Just looping is really lazy after all the effort and skill put in to making it look and play so well.
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
I have to agree there but one must assume if we're being kind that there was no memory left for any kind of ending. Maybe Raff one day will let us know!

Even the ZX Spectrum original just loops without any kind of ending :(
