Taking a shower on Amtrak... Turn shower on, get wet, soap on head, re-wet... then just let the train agitate you like in a washing machine. Rinse. LOL... Superliner Bedrooms are really the best accommodation you can get, especially if traveling with a partner. My grandson and I just got back from a trip and in order for him to experience the different levels, we booked regional coach, Acela 1st, Bedroom and Roomette. He's 11, and even being that small, the roomette was tight with us both. Thanks for your reviews. You guys rock!

@@spark_6710 It was his first train trip, and he REALLY wanted to ride the Acela... It was actually my first time in a bedroom as well. Rob and Allie, I really love your video tours of all things Amtrak! Great work! My first long-distance train trip was aboard the Coast Starlight from LA to Oakland. Since it was not an overnight trip, a roomette was just a little more than coach, so we went for it, and we enjoyed it immensely! My wife and I have booked a 5-day, 4-night trip from LA to Tampa one week before Thanksgiving, and we sprung for the full-size sleeper bedroom! Yeah, it cost a pretty penny, but the privacy and comfort of your own room is well worth the cost! You two lovebirds are like me and my wife...you have a great love of adventure, and of each other! So adorable!

That's awesome! Glad you enjoyed it! I think that Coast Starlight day trip in a roomette is one of the best experiences at a reasonable cost you can do. We just did it with points ourselves. What route are you going LA to Tampa? We are going LA to Miami right now, but in a roomette. We did Coast Starlight, California Zephyr (on it as I type) Capitol Limited and then Silver Meteor.

We took the Southwest Chief and Coast Starlight in 2006 in a sleeper. At the time things had been going downhill, but had not hit bottom, and overall the trip was great. It will be wonderful for Amtrak to get funding to improve the trains. Amtrak needs to invest in upgrades including USB ports, more electrical outlets and wireless charging. I hope to take another overnight or longer trip, there's nothing like it. Thank you for the great video.

Very thorough and informative video, thank you! The only thing I would like to know that wasn't addressed is the comfort of the beds. We've slept in sleeper rooms on trains in India and the "mattresses" were very thin and hard. You couldn't "sink in" to any degree, causing soreness and stiff muscles in the morning. This might not be so important for young people but older folks have arthritis to deal with so sleeping on the equivalent of a park bench is very hard on us. Perhaps you could add this to the things you mention if you do another video.

Just curious as to which sleeper car model/version that is. I’ve seen some videos where the set-up is a lot “older” with respect to the accessories in the room. That one looks pretty new. Also, aren’t some of the bedrooms designed WITHOUT a toilet and shower combo? Finally, if you could at some point in time, describe the differences between each of the sleeping quarters on the Superliner - Viewliner as well, but I’m primarily interested in Western journeys down the road. Thanks, Allie and Rob! Of course Vera and I love all your terrific Amtrak videos!
@cecilearquette16373 жыл бұрын
Western routes have Superliner trains. This is the exact set-up for the bedroom, they are all the same. A Roomette is much smaller without a bathroom, but you have access to a shower on the first level of the train that is reserved for first class. There are also Family rooms, which go all the way across a car on the first level. These are cool because you have a window on each side, but they don’t have bathrooms. In my experience, the bedrooms are not always that great, because when the person next to you flushes their toilet, you hear it and smell it sometimes! You can also hear people snoring in the next compartment!

@@cecilearquette1637 Hi, Cecile. As I mentioned, there are versions of the Superliner (“western” cars). I wanted to know if this was on a Superliner II, or Superliner I. It appears to be the newer version, but I wanted a confirmation from Rob or Allie,

@@JJ-ck2mt This is a Superliner I car. The Superliner I’s were built in the late 70’s and refurbished in the early 2010’s. The Superliner II’s were built in the 90’s and have never had a major refurbishment. The 1’s had new bathrooms installed along with new wall paneling, faux wood instead of “carpet on the walls” as seen in the 2’s. In almost every respect Superliner I’s are better. This may change when all Superliner cars go into refurbishment this year. You are mainly going to see 1’s on western trains as there were about 70 built compared to 49 2’s. In addition the Auto Train in the East uses all Superliner II equipment further increasing the chances of seeing a 1 on the western routes.

Rode from ElPaso to Fort Worth in one of these rooms on the Texas Eagle in June 2021. I’m 5-11, 215, wife is 5-2. I did not like trying to sleep on the train. I would’ve liked to try folding over the mattress and not pulling out the lower bed and see if that would’ve worked for more cushioning. I hated the lack of space in front of the sink - I wish it was closer to the bathroom - we had very tight space to brush our teeth, wash face, etc. We didn’t see that beforehand. We’ll just do day travel next time, if there is a next time. We paid $700 - one senior, one adult.

Thank you both for this and other very informative videos. I'm afraid I'm spoiled. I rode the "older" sleepers, sometimes referred to as "heritage equipment". On that equipment a roomette was a single bedroom with it's own toilet and sink. A double bedroom was much more spacious, had two different configurations that gave passengers a choice of berths parallel or perpendicular to the track, and could be opened up en-suite with the adjoining room and had its own enclosed bathroom annex. Compartments could be for three people. Drawing rooms were about the largest room available in common use prior to Amtrak. All the accommodations offered a fan, a control for the amount of air conditioning entering the room radiant floor heat. In short they were a far more comfortable design. If you like a good movie and want a fairly accurate picture of what train travel used to be, watch "North by Northwest" the Alfred Hitchcock movie that starts out on the 20th Century Limited. The Santa Fe developed the high level coach cars that preceded the Super-liners but never tried to cram sleeping service on these cars on two levels. Prior to and in the early days of Amtrak, the Santa Fe would have the single level sleepers and a dome lounge car for first class passengers only.

Thank you for that tour... I think I rather travel by horse and buggy, in the winter, during a blizzard. Lol

You can put two of these together and make a suite, that's the largest.
