Right?! this dude is wholesome as hell. I took the train from Chicago to New Orleans after my grandmother insisted because that is how she travelled from Chicago to her grandparents farm wayyyy down in Mississippi. It was one of the best travel experiences that I have had. Also was so cool to experience what my grandmother had experienced 60 plus years later.

Will, your video is really well thought-out and well edited. Thanks for posting it. I am curious, though, wondering why so many people really hate riding Amtrak and write really bad reviews of it, especially on TripAdvisor. I think they approach it with the wrong attitude. It's not the Uptown Hilton, or first class flying. It's a train, with bumps and stops and slow pace and sometimes forcing you to do without things like hot water or working toilets! If you can get yourself into the pace and put up with the inconveniences, it sounds like the way to go. I rode cross country in the days far before Amtrak came along, and still have fond memories, like a full turkey dinner in August in a dining car with white linen tablecloths! Thanks again and keep havin' fun. I have subscribed.
@WillEdmond
@WillEdmond 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. Most people approach it with a bad attitude. We live in a society where people want everything fast and quick. Amtrak isn't that. You are suppose to relax and enjoy the scenery and the small hiccups that sometimes comes with train travel. If I'm delayed, it dIdn't matter to me on a train because I've planned time for a delay just in case. You had an awesome experience back in the day as well. Glad you are following the journey. Thanks again.

The wife saw elk on the mountain side going through Glacier National Park. The scenery was beyond belief, except for the plain states. Flat but still beautiful. Oh BTW wave when you go through Fargo to our friends there. We have recently taken the City of New Orleans to New Orleans. Stayed for 2 days then on the Sunset Limited to San Antonio stayed for 2 days and finished up on the Texas Eagle to Chicago. What a trip!!! We hope you get time to see the Aquarium when your in New Orleans. And if you are a WW2 buff make sure you catch the action at WW2 museum. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry if you already done it -- maybe even done a video about it -- but New Orleans to LA (the Sunset Limited) !!! Do it! We live in Houston, so we started there -- and there are possibilities, I think, from Chicago to San Antonio where some of the cars on that train join up with the train coming from New Orleans to continue on to LA. The station in SA is near the Alamodome and the station in LA is awesome (we've all seen it it TV shows and /or Movies) -- and it's in a cool part of LA from which to start a journey around ALL there is to see and experience there ! AND, I very much enjoy your videos -- I've only just "found" you (watching videos about Ashevillle, NC). You're energy is very positive -- love it!

I was glad to see you still had access to the Cafe car. We're planning a trip this fall on the Crescent from Gainesville, GA to New Orleans and from there to San Antonio on the Sunset. I'm still trying to decide if having the Roomette as opposed to a Coach seat is worth it and I think it is since there will be two of us. You did a great job on this project and it helped me a lot.

Fellow rail enthusiast, here, and a new subbie. I enjoyed your vlog so much, from the thorough content to your vivacious spirit and humor. That was so cool when you waltzed right up into the sleeper car. I remember, back in November, I was on an East Coast Amtrak train and we were on a smoking break/fresh-air break at Albany, and across the platform was a train waiting in the station and headed for Chicago. I was so excited that the conductor of that train gave me a private tour of the sleeping car. I was sitting down, spinning around (as you did in your vid) -- oh man, so much room! I can't wait to do my first overnight train: Empire Builder, for sure. I plan to do my trip via Amtrak Vacations; after riding across the Midwest to the Pacific, there's a motorcoach to Vancouver (from Seattle, I think), and then from Vancouver to Toronto by VIA Rail Canada. But I also want to ride the Crescent because you showed us how cool it is, AND I've got to see New Orleans!!! Thank you for the excellent adventure by rail on Amtrak!

I took the San Francisco Zephyr in 1978. DC to Chicago, change in Chicago. 5 nights 4 days. All in coach. I packed 12 books, a blanket and a small pillow with roadrunner on it. Brilliant journey. I was young, so coach was okay. I even washed my hair daily ( oh VANITY!) In the sink, because they had foot pedal control of the sink taps! The SanFrancisco Zephyr route went to places like Ottumwa, IA, but crossed the Great Salt Lake and Cheyenne WY, Sparks instead of Reno, NV. The route ended on Oakland.

If you want to see 1960s vintage streamliners - check out recent videos on the VIA trains between Winnipeg and Churchill, Manitoba. They run vintage cars with sections (think of I Love Lucy train sequences), roomettes and compartments. Some long haul Amtrak trains turn off the car interior lights at about 10pm for coach passengers to sleep.

The gentleman who explained the situation with Superliner equipment being unable to go through the Hudson River tunnels is correct. They are too big. However, NJ Transit's Bombardier-made bi-level cars were designed to be able to fit into the tunnels, so while Amtrak can't run Superliners into NY Penn Station, NJ Transit does run bi-level trains into PSNY. Another problem for the Superliners is that they only have doors capable of serving low platforms. Penn Station only has high platforms.

Great video! Lots of good info. They do bring the lights down in the evening, but not til later. I looooove trains. I took the Seattle-LA Coast Starlight (I think it was called) in coach and really enjoyed it, despite the lack of a bed. The chairs fold lean back quite a ways and if you use your luggage as a foot rest you can get mostly horizontal. I love watching the landscape roll by, love the quiet meditative quality. Bring a book and just chill - low stress, lovely views, quiet and way more comfortable than flying. Oh, and the rocking is not nauseating, like boats. Just gentle rocking 😴😛

Listen if you are traveling east than ride via train especially if you are a railfan due to the services provided for non railfans but a mecha plus for railfans is the slight chance to spot heritage units along your journey

Will, you are too infectiously enthusiastic. I mentioned on Will's train vid, I travelled around the USA via Amtrak. This video of your is so exemplary of my experience exploring the offerings on the train and the people you meet. Conversations are plenty. Your ride with Mike is not to be missed. I only do train now. The only downer going by train is the long layovers for some connecting trains, especially going through Chicago and New Orleans! Great video!!!!!

Your positive attitude and excitement are infectious! Just about everything I have read about Amtrak has been horrible and negative. This is one of the few positive reviews. Yours is by far the best. I have never rode the train, but I want to try it. I am also in Atlanta and wanted a review from the Atlanta station. I am now excited to try it because of your review. Thank you!

Thanks for the love LaTonya! The train ride from Atlanta to New Orleans is a breeze. And it’s super affordable. I did coach class and only spent $130! With the prices of gas you can’t beat that. Hope you check out my new Amtrak video.

OMG! Will, I have been taking the Crescent Train from New York Penn Station to Spartanburg, SC Station since forever. My trip is 13 hours and I have ridden both coach and first class( bedroom). I love taking the train. One note of advice, bring a sweatshirt and a blanket because it’s freezing cold on the train at night no matter which season you’re travelling. I love taking the train. I love your videos. I can’t wait to go on your next train adventure with you.

I stumbled upon your video and I have become engrossed wanting more. I'm a former employee , Amtrak Auto Train (Lorton,VA.) OBS- Chef. Sadly, I didn't take advantage of the many travel discounts for employees while working. Was just to tired to ride a train after 2days on & 1 day off, (extra-broad) the train. Oh well, I hope/will enjoy my railroad pension, fully vested after 5years. Enjoy your rail riding and stay safe. Peace & Blessings.
