It was time to head out to Kingston, Rhode Island to film America's fastest train - the Acela Express - at its maximum speed of 150 miles per hour (241 kilometers per hour).
Kingston, RI is one of the few stretches of track where Acela Express trains are permitted to run at their max speed of 150 mph. Along with Mansfield, Massachusetts, Kingston is the only station on Acela Express' route where trains will pass through, adjacent to platforms, at 150 mph.
The two Acelas featured in this video are northbound Train 2160, which arrived at Providence, RI at 3:59 PM, and southbound Train 2171, which departed Providence at 3:45 PM.
Some apologies to make: It was a ridiculously bright day at Kingston, RI, and thus the camera could not handle the sheer intensity of the glare of the sun and its reflection on the platforms of the station. Color correction could not fix the blown-out image. (The "Bay Area Transit News" logo is left out on purpose, as it was too bright to put it anywhere and so you can focus all your attention (hopefully) on the trains themselves.)
Another apology for the rough camerawork throughout the video; it is both exhilarating and terrifying to film a 150-mph train flying past you, shaking that platform as it blows by.
The Acela Express is a high-speed rail line, operated by Amtrak, that serves the Northeast Corridor and the major cities of Washington, D.C, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Acela began service on December 11, 2000. Trains share the tracks with Northeast Regional service, and the trip from D.C. to Boston takes slightly less than seven hours, shaving off one (1) hour on the trip compared to Northeast Regional services. It remains America's fastest train, with a top speed of 150 mph, but Florida's Brightline and California's high speed rail project look to dethrone Acela's 17-year tenure in the near and distant future.

@@chsrails Yep, about 165-170 between Boston and Providence before service started. Sadly, the new trains coming won't be going any faster - the railway infrastructure cannot handle it. Only go 125 mph max south of New York, and max of 125 to Harrisburg, PA and Albany, NY.

They are going to have to replace the tracks to more durable tracks that can withstand high speeds. That will be very expensive.

Entering the World Wars halfway through when your factories had had massive growth through selling arms to the other countries. After the war they retooled to produce consumer products. European factories were flattened.

The vast majority of Shinkansen services go about 150mph, bud. They have a few lines at 186mph, but almost all lines are about as fast as the Acela. I encourage you to look it up. Just like with the Acela, the trains themselves can go faster but the tracks can’t sustain higher speeds. The new Acela trains, the TGV-derived Avelia Liberty, will go 160mph. It will be faster than most Shinkansen services in operation, btw.

@@TohaBgood2 Japanese Shinkansen have been around since the 1960s technologically advancing over the years. Now they have luxury bullet trains with first class airplane ambience. The US has a long way to go the Acelas are a joke I’m in NJ I’ve seen them and been in them. Absolutely nothing to compare the Shinkansen is built better overall better train in every single aspect. You cannot compare Japanese quality vs US quality. Do your homework before you comment on something that majority of people around the world already know. Good luck.

@@_MIKIMOTO_ Are you kidding? The Shinkansen is probably my favorite HSR system in the world, but the train interiors are objectively atrocious! 80s bus-style cloth seats? Why is everything beige like in a rural hospital? Why so crammed with soooooo many seats in each row, like a super-budget airline? Why are the seats so uncomfortable? And what’s up with the tiny, child-size windows? Why? Just, why? I’m sorry, bud, the old Acelas may be 20 year old and being replaced, but they are objectively luxurious compared to most Shinkansen trains! The Shinkansen network is great. It does a very good job of carrying people. Efficient and safe, even though it’s on the slow side compared to modern HSR systems. But the train interiors are just not one of the Shinkansen’s strengths, not even close.

@@TohaBgood2 You obviously haven’t seen the interior of the newer models of the Shinkansen. Yes older models have plain rudimentary interiors. These trains are extremely expensive to make if you haven’t noticed. Japans economy is suffering and making newer trains comes at a great cost. The newer Shinkansen models have absolutely gorgeous interiors. I have flown first class on JAL and I can confidently say the interior in GranClass is just as comfortable if not better than that of the plane. Stop trying to make the Acela the better train we all know it’s absolute garbage. I’ve been on it and I am not impressed at all. Ride quality is terrible , loud , not smooth at all interior is cheap and looks outdated for something that is supposed to be “new”. I don’t care how much you hurt and puff I will never consider the acelas or any amtrak trains to be superior or anywhere near Japanese trains. You need to go look at Japanese architectural engineering. Japan will always lead the world technologically I mean they have been around for over 1,000 years. USA have been around for 246 years. You don’t need be a scientist to figure that one out. I’m done quarreling back and worth with you. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and no one has to agree with anyone.

@@_MIKIMOTO_ Yeah, bud, I’ve lived in Japan for a little while and still have a ton of Japanese friends. The Shinkansens almost always have rural hospital interiors. It’s just a fact of life. Accept reality. Even the new first class areas on the Shinkansens are meh at best by international standards. You should try riding first class in some European HSR trains! This just isn’t something any of the Japanese HSR companies do well. The Acela is over 20 years old. The new TGV-derived Acela trains are in testing. None are in operation. You could not have ever been on one because they aren’t any carrying passengers and it’s a brand new Alstom train model. So clearly you lie about ever being on a new Acela. Just cope quietly if you can’t accept reality.

Definition of high speed is 186 mph or more. This is not and never has been high speed. The 150 mph is only achieved over a short stretch of about 15 miles. FRA carbody strengthening requirements caused truck hunting and oscillation problems not present in the european version of this equipment. This thing is a tribute to Amtrak incompetence and nothing more. If you want anything done right, don't let the government be involved.

There is no universal definition of what constitutes "high-speed" rail. Acela is America's only higher-speed rail service; since there is no universal definition of what high-speed rail is, and since the length of track isn't always the determining factor of what constitutes high-speed rail, we'd take the definition of the United States Department of Transportation's definition, which ranges from sustained speeds of 110 to 150+ mph. European, Asian and American definitions vary wildly; it depends on how you want to define high-speed rail in relation to speed and sustained distance, so you could call Acela high-speed rail and be technically correct, depending on what you were referencing. You could also call it higher-speed rail and also be right, depending on the source. If America does build true high-speed rail (California and Texas are most promising), we're pretty sure government would have to get involved, just as European governments continue to do for their extensive high-speed rail systems.

zoqaeski And who developed railways in USA? Private enterprise operating in free capitol markets with land grants and government bonds, and the bonds were repaid in full with interest and on time. If private capitol won't participate, then there is no chance of profitable operation. I will be God Damned if I am going to have to pay more in taxes to operate another mode of transportation in competition with the major modes(air and highway) both of which are tax subsidized already. Just because the dog can lick it's own ass, doesn't mean it has too.
