I took this route in mid march 2022, spectacular river views, terrible food and it was almost 6 hours late getting into Chicago. I will never take this route again until it has a dining car. I also did Chicago to NYC via the Cardinal, wonderful views but again, I would never take it again without a dining car. It broke down just outside of DC and it took almost five hours to get a new engine. Trains are wonderful, I love em, but they are unpredictable! The California Zephyr, the Coast Starlight and the Empire Builder have their problems but at least you have excellent food to mitigate the lateness, I rode all of those trains in March, 2022, as part of my 80th birthday gift to myself. My wife doesn't have the patience for trains, so this was an 8500 mile,16 day , solo trip. I agree about the Fairfield in NYC, it was perfect for my three days there. This is a wonderful site that gave me a lot of useful information. I have used their hotel recommendations and they all have been excellent!

Thanks for sharing your solo trip experience. I am planning a solo trip myself traveling Emeryville to NYC, south maybe to Charlotte curving west to New Orleans, then west to LA, up the Coast Starlight to Portland and fly home...or something like that...still working on the route. I didn't realize there wasn't a dining car on this route.

I love the Lake Shore Limited. It passes through a block away from me. In Amherst, Ohio. I also took it to Chicago in 1989. I was 9 traveling to LA for my uncles wedding. ( My Mom hates to fly.) We took coach to Chicago (we picked up the train at about 4:30am) and had a layover in Chicago for like 6 hours before our next train to LA, California. I absolutely loved the trip and I would love to take my boys one day. ❤️

Incredible video!! 40 years ago, Amtrak offered 3 overnight trains NY-Chicago: Lakeshore Ltd., Cardinal, & Broadway Ltd., each taking different routes & schedules. All but the Cardinal offered Slumbercoach cars for those travelling on a budget. Complimentary meals were not offered for sleeper car passengers until the '90's. The Cardinal was/is in my opinion, is the most scenic of Eastern trains although it still operates 3x's/wk. with the longest route. It will be great when all passengers will have access to Dining Cars again.

Just took this Train from NY to Chicago. VIP lounge in NY was phenomenal. Was on wrong side of train in roomette. Staff was wonderful and extremely attentive. Roomette was not as clean as it could have been. I watched another train video and brought Lysol wipes which clearly provided evidence how much cleaning was missed. Dinner and breakfast were good. Used my own cell data and was able to watch TV on phone with no issues when scenery was not interesting. Was suppose to get a connection from Chicago to LA but train was cancelled. There was no alternative and had to book plane to complete trip to LA. Given we are in the 21st century would think there would be advance high speed rails to shorten cross country travel time, updated and significantly cleaner room. I may take Amtrak for trips 8 hours or less going forward. Will wait for country to get high speed rail and more modern rooms with all rooms including bathroom and shower facilities in place for all rooms before recommending cross country trip on train.

Unlike the airlines with multiple flights a day, Amtrak long distance trains are once a day, or trice weekly... I always recommend everyone book their Amtrak journeys to get to their destination a day early, if not two. Always plan a night's layover at any connecting city with another train like Chicago... Like the airlines, weather can delay trains and lead to cancellations... So be smart and plan accordingly...

The cafe car is on the Boston section, so it doesn’t become available until Albany. Therefore, if you’re in coach, just going for a Hudson-side seat at the outset is best. Roomette passengers on the non Hudson side can go to the dining car for dinner to get Hudson views.

Really enjoyed the video. My best friend and I are planning a train trip in the spring to visit my sister in Chicago, but we are in WV, so we will be on the Cardinal. We are considering getting a roomette for the trip to Chicago, and coach on the way back, both to save some money and to get the experience. I have a small cooler that folds up, that you can freeze, so we can pack a lunch and not have to buy lunch on the train. I am excited to see Union Station. I have seen it many times in movies and in pictures. Is the lounge available after you arrive at your destination, or just while waiting for your train. We have some time to kill before we will be picked up. Not sure if we want to take the L with luggage, to take us closer to where my sister lives.

Have travelled roundtrip a few times from Chicago to my Schenectady, NY hometown on the LSL. It's doable in coach, but I feel like a zombie after 15+ hours, including an overnight! One compromise is to fly in one direction and take the train in the other. Boarding mid-route in coach, you don't always get seat selection as you might like; the conductor basically says, "You're there."
@nanabobana2 жыл бұрын
In 2006, doing the short run from Chicago to Toledo in coach, the conductor on the Capitol put me next to another woman in a mostly empty car. I really wanted to be alone and sleep so I just moved my little seat tag to the front seat across the aisle. Nobody said a word and I was able to sleep almost all the way home! :)
@nanabobana2 жыл бұрын
Hello from Toledo! I took the LSL from Toledo to Chicago for a weekend in 2006 and caught the Capitol to come back. It was supposed to take about 5 hours so I just had seats. Both ways we were stalled for a couple of hours to wait for gaps in the freight traffic and the Capitol was by far the most comfortable to wait out the delay. I was motion sick on the way to Chi (the attendant in the cafe was great to me and offered me free 7Up and crackers to settle my stomach) but had no problem coming back, I slept most of the way and we got in at 3am, 2 hours late. I love your videos...you have made me really want to take more trains. This is the first video of yours that covered a ride somewhat familiar to me but you didn't mention the delays, which I gather are very frequent. Did you not get delayed or is that a personal choice not to give that info? Thanks!

I took the Lake Shore Limited from Boston to Chicago in March. To be honest, I was a little disappointed when I compared the route to some of the others I've taken on Amtrak. When you depart from Boston, you have to wait for the New York part of the train to meet up with you at Albany before you get to have dinner, as they have the Dining Car. The meals were still the reheated ones that were in use last year. Now, I would've been okay with this had I not got on the Empire Builder in Chicago and experienced Traditional Dining! Also, due to the timing of the route, the only Lake Shore I actually got see was literally on the outskirts of Chicago...and I saw that for all of around 15 minutes! The real kicker for me though was that we were so late getting into Chicago, I didn't have time to go to Beggars Pizza accross from Union Station to get me some Deep Dish! This is an essential part of my trip when I take Amtrak from one coast to the other!

Every Amtrak sleeper train has a handicap room in the sleeper car and handicap seating in the coach cars... Amtrak does desire to be notified of any handicap needs upon booking. While many of the stations have lifts, some of the smaller depots don't, but these lifts can be shifted around to handle notified bookings... Show up at the last second without notifying Amtrak, the lift may not be available... While the large stations are staffed, most of the small depots aren't staffed...

How great that you can avoid Penn Station! I found it super-confusing. But then I also find the Chicago Station confusing. Seems like in an airport, reading signs can get you from Point A to Point B. I suppose I could call but would be nice to just know.

Right on! I did the same. It's very awkward and time consuming. Not user friendly at all. Better fare search software is needed. They are spending a lot of money updating station kiosks but not online information. Also, rather than spending money on stations, engines and cars, spend more money on improved trackage so the travel times are shorter. That would improve ridership the most.
@ronclark97242 жыл бұрын
@@davidjackson7281 The tracks are mostly owned by the freight railroads who spend billions annually maintaining their tracks as they are presently. They have NO intentions of spending more so that Amtrak can go faster, they are happy doing the speed they are now... If Amtrak desires to go faster, Amtrak can spend trillions building new tracks on their own new right of ways... Money Amtrak does NOT have... You may ask why, because Congress knows that less than 2 percent of Americans have ever rode a Amtrak long distance train while over 80 percent have flown at least once, and 100 percent use the highways one way or another... Amtrak is a LOW priority...

@@ronclark9724 I am quite aware of what you are saying, I worked for Southern Pacific. I live in California which is having an unsuccessful time building HSR. I agree with you regarding Amtrak and that less than 2% have ridden it LD. However, when it comes to money vs. ridership it's kind of the chicken and the egg story. I believe there are cost efficient ways to improve speeds. Merely improving trackage for speeds of 25 mph to 40-50 mph saves a lot of time.
@davidjackson72812 жыл бұрын
@@ronclark9724 You make some excellent points. Yes, new tracks need to be built to avoid freight traffic, such as upgrading from Class 4 (79 mph) to Class 6 (110 mph) and grade separated like Brightline (I'm a big fan) is doing in Florida. I favor "higher-speed" regional trains (125 mph max) up to 500 miles. After that fly. Funding is a big political issue. Regional improvements would cost hundreds of billions but not exaggerated trillions (not to make too fine of a point). Anyway, enough said for now on this endless debatable subject. Pasta and meatballs with salad and bread costs $10 - $12 at most diners.

This also includes a drink too. Some restaurants are charging over $3 just for a drink...

Too bad there’s all that roomy space in upper bunk and great window, I’ll be on the top. Please tell me I’m wrong but isn’t all the good stuff to see going by while you’re sleeping (speaking of going from Boston to Chicago).

In June 2018 travelled from Albany to Chicago on LSL. Started to get dark somewhere along the Mohawk River and woke up around Toledo so missed Lakes Erie and Ontario so yes the name of the train is a bit misleading from what you can actually see but still was a great trip as part of a coast to coast train ride. Greetings from the UK.

As a video production professional for almost 50 years, may I suggest you add some music to your video. Have it under you as you speak and bring it up in volume when you're just showing video with no commentary. Try Epidemic Sound for good choice at a reasonable cost. Nicely done otherwise.

Do y'all know of a disabled person who travels by train? 🤔🤔 (Preferably someone who uses a motorized scooter.) 😉😉

Yes... And I book a handicap sleeper room every time, whether Viewliner or Superliner... Amtrak is better than flying...

Right on! At least the penthouse headroom is much better vs. the Superliner coffin.

They really should put more effort into deep cleaning or refurbishing the older roomettes if they plan to keep them in rotation.

@@hopealexander7849 You betcha sweet bippy. One could only "Hope". Apparently, during covid they laid (layed?) off a lot of employees and are now trying to restaff. But 1st they had to fill personnel positions in order to perform the hiring process. Sad but true. What do they say? It's the journey not the destination.

Ask the porter for a new cloth, or bring one aboard yourself... People do wear all kinds of hair conditionings that smear on the chair's fabrics... These fabrics are several years old being used daily... What did you expect, a new chair just for you?
