Amtrak Sunset Limited Train - Beaumont to Houston - Review of COACH Class

Unfortunately Amtrak runs on freight railroad's tracks whose dispatchers work for the freight railroads, not Amtrak. The dispatchers know who puts butter on their bread, it isn't Amtrak. Therefore most of the time Amtrak usually is not on time. Furthermore during the summer months there are heat restrictions of the steel rails, slowing the trains down when the temperatures go above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Try taking the Sunset Ltd from New Orleans to Los Angeles… I don’t suggest doing it in coach. Get a roomette.

Amtrak is not for the faint of heart. Don't expect 5 star luxuries. I only ride Amtrak from Houston to Beaumont for fun since I'm a railfanner. For $15 I cannot complain. Not the most breathtaking scenery between here and there but it's very fun nonetheless. I too went during the Covid and restrictions were pretty enforced then. I'm sure by now things have died down a bit. The car with the all windows is the lounge car, my favorite of all!

Man this is awesome! Willie and your mom and dad. Kat and I need to ride the train because it looks cool and we have never ridden on one. (Red Dead 2 online doesn’t count! Lol)

It does have assigned seating but if you go to the viewing cart you can just sit wherever.
