Back in early 1990 I was riding the southbound Coast Starlight going through Oxnard, California at 79 mph and hit a Ventura county water maintenance pickup on a grade crossing. I was amazed how fast we came to a stop after impact. The crew asked for any medical personnel on board. The pickup occupant was life flighted out, I never heard if they lived or not. We sat there for 3 hours before continuing on.

Breaking News:An Amtrak Train Has wrecked a Hi Rail Truck. At around 9:30 A.M., an man who works for Union Pacific Railroad was driving his truck to work. At 9:40 A.M., When he was approaching the crossing, he saw the bell ringing and lights flashing. The driver was stepping on the brake pedal, but to no avail. When this situation happened, the driver bailed out of the truck before impact, and the engineer saw the truck roll in front of the train, put on the brakes, but it was too late, the truck, which was wrecked, was on fire. Fire Rescue and Police arrived at the scene. The lead loco, described as a P32-8WH, number 516, has white scratches on its cow catcher.

Breaking news: This just in an Amtrak P32-8BWH has collided with a truck at 12:30 PM EST. The train was going around 30 mph at the time of the wreck. It’s a ballast train. Most Amtrak’s you probably see run on other rail companies track however Amtrak does own some of their own and they have to maintain them just like any other railroad 🙂. They don’t necessarily just use “passenger locos” but they could use anyone they own.
