Its something about being nice, warm, and cozy while its a winter wonderland outside, puts me straight to sleep, and keeps me that way. Apparently, some of us took a page outta the bears book, and took a shine to the whole hibernation idea lol.

During the Summer in Antarctica (October-March), there’s 24 hours of daylight every day. I think it’d be cool to go in the winter with perpetual darkness, and a window to look at the stars since there’s no light pollution.

The Amundsen-Scott station is a marvel and a feat of engineering. I’m thoroughly impressed at just how advanced this station is. The sophistication, level of comfort, amenities, amount of storage, it’s all so incredible. As an engineer, I’m blown away by the water, waste, and sewage system there. It’s really, in so many ways, not so different from being in a modern-day hotel. Except it’s basically entirely self-sufficient, in the middle of a desert, inaccessible for months on end, completely isolated, and if you go outside in a t-shirt, you could be dead in minutes. I mean, it has to feel like a hotel, considering just how dark, cold, and isolated people may begin to feel, at times. It really shows with the design, the colors, and openness of the floor plan. It’s very warm and welcoming. It would be an incredible place to visit and experience. You are lucky, my man. Loved the video! Thanks for sharing!

PLEASE don't apologize for the length of the video!! I loved it. I first got interested in the South Pole when the American doctor working there in 1999 (Dr Jerri Nielsen) developed breast cancer, and diagnosed herself. With the help of the winterover crew, they staged a midwinter airdrop of supplies (chemo drugs, freshies, and medical equipment), and she was evacuated in early spring. (Back then, the Dome was still at the Pole.) I may never be able to experience the Pole myself, but I love watching your videos. Keep em coming!

This was an oddly satisfying video. It's pretty damn cool to see such a big place, with so many comfort and technical amenities , in an area that a majority of people think is just a vast open wasteland of snow and ice.

Thanks for the tour. I haven't been down for several years and it's nice to see that much hasn't changed. I was down over 3 summers during the Ice Cube installation (I worked on installing the tanks for the Ice Top array). My first year down the station was still being constructed, A3 and A4 were still construction zones so the main entrance was Destination Zulu. I lucked out and was berthed in A1 my first year (usually in the summer only VIPs and big-wigs got A1 berths). Then I was in A4, and then B1 my last year. It's nice to see the Ice Cube DOM still hung up near DA. Another experiment I worked on down there are the neutron Monitors. I don't know it they are still there, but our bare monitors were on the mezzanine in B2. Because our group at Bartol also had (Still have? I left Bartol a while ago) a neutron monitor station outside with all the plastic moderators and the lead rings, we called the bare tubes the Polar Bares. We liked to say that we had the only Polar Bares(Bears) on Antarctica. Something you forgot to mention (probably because it was closed all winter w/o any supporting flights) is the store also has the Southern-most US Post office with its own Zip code. Just a bit of fun trivia.

Can a regular civilian visit here, or is it only for research etc?
@Sembazuru
@Sembazuru 3 жыл бұрын
@@JMazzell Regular citizens can visit the pole, usually through a tourism flight (Ken Borek Air flies the planes, I'm not sure who arranges the trips). But civilians aren't allowed in the station or any science buildings for safety and security reasons. When I was down there there was a small compacted snow area with tents set up near the pole markers for the tourists. (We weren't allowed in their tents, likely for the same safety and security reasons. Just from the other end.)

@Sembazuru
@Sembazuru 3 жыл бұрын
@@bustersmith5569 The safety is actually more liability. The USAP doesn't want to be sued if someone trips in the station and hurts themselves. The security is for the scientists. They have delicate equipment and don't want just anyone fiddling with their equipment. For example, I was down there for IceCube, but I wasn't supposed to wander through (for example) South Pole Teleacope's buildings uninvited (and unescorted). Because the working season is so short (trying to get a year's worth of work done in 3-4 months) the workers of the science groups simply don't have enough time to run regular tours for the tourists.

Thank you very much for this visit. You guys are really doing a great job. I very admire and appreciate it. I have been watching many videos made by station people in Antarctica. All are very interesting. What surprised me about the station's architecture is that the colours in the design are not usually good enough to make people feel more relaxed and comfortable. Mine is not critics but I see the same design mistakes in many stations. They have space but are not designed functionally. Building up a station in the coldest place on Earth is a real challenge, but the design that makes people more relaxed is not so difficult. I see fewer shelves to store things and always messy rooms due to lack of boxes and storage units. Lighting is also another issue. Dark walls and dark floors absorb the light. The light is so important to keep the mood high and positive. Although all my critics, to live and to work in a station must be really cool and an important experience. I wish I could have it. I wrote my comments so an expert may find them worthy for future design projects. Regards

Several schools had him come and do a presentation. He retired after 24 years in the Navy. I really loved this video. He spent 13 months down there. He was in Bermuda before he went there...lol. Paradise to a frozen tundra.

Hey, man! I've been showing your video to my ESL students for quite a while. We always marvel at how America managed to take the oppressive idea of a research station in the coldest place on Earth and turn it into the comfiest-looking high-school experience one could imagine. 😀 I hope you're doing alright and that life's treating you well. Take care and happy travels!

@GoneVenturing Well, your English is impeccable, so someone's done their job (and learning) right! Yeah, we ooh and aah at the music room, the gym, the crafts room and all those neat places. Great experience and amazing to have it shared. I'm very glad to hear you didn't drop off the face of the planet after your most recent videos four years ago - I hear Antarctica's pretty close to those geomagnetically dramatic edges. 😜 Hope you meet some haka-chanting hobbits soon. And maybe a return to form with travel videos. All the best!

@ Ahh thank you, I appreciate that! I did move when I was seven, so I did start pretty young, which was very helpful! I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the videos though! I’m really happy people are still finding them informative after all these years! I actually do miss making videos and have been thinking about getting back into it. Less of the travel, but I’ve gotten quite into adventure sports since living in NZ. Things like mountaineering and paragliding, which I think would be great content! We’ll see though, I do marketing full time now (because of the things I learned with this channel) so it’s sometimes hard to motivate myself to create content when I’ve been doing so much of it all the time. Anyways, thanks again!!

To the point I looked up prices for a "vacation" and I can't afford it unless I save up for awhile, and now I'm even toying of the thought of employment up there during the Summer months, but being as I currently have a good paying career already I'm not so sure they would be privvy to me walking away for 4+ months. I believe it’s to help with the telescopes. The South Pole has a very unique environment that offers remarkably clear views of space (some of the clearest on Earth IIRC), and the telescope arrays located there have to be very finely tuned to have the proper accuracy and stability to look for distant objects. Any amount of excess or non-natural light could throw off their optics and force the teams to spend days correcting them properly again. It’s less for the people inside the building, and more for the equipment outside.

I was the 2015 winter-over Doc at South Pole and enjoyed watching this video. There have been a few changes since my winter-over but, for the most part, things looked the same. Nice to see that the photos of some of my favorite running trails that I put up in front of one of the treadmills in the weight room are still there. I commend and thank you for having the tenacity to edit and organize your video for this presentation. I have hours of video of every aspect of the station and all of the outbuildings and telescopes as well as "the berms" and "the end of the world." I doubt that anyone will ever see them but me. Thanks for sharing all of this. It is such a unique honor to be part of the South Pole family!

Hey, dude, I freaking loved this video! I’m an architect and I have a few questions if you don’t mind: 1. Since you said that sauna is among your favorite places on the station especially because of lighting-is the lighting in your rooms/cabins controllabe in the sense of color temperature? So that you can pull it down, below 2700K to make it close to the lighting of the sauna for example. Might it be because they need you alert as soon as you wake up? 2. Who are the architects of this latest iterration? And were they living on the station before they made the final designs? 3. Does NASA use the data from your reports in any way to improve the way they prepare the astronauts for their future space expeditions? I hope you answer my questions as I would dedinitely love to research this subject more. Thank you! P.S. Instant subscribe! Thanks so much for sharing!
@GoneVenturing

Thanks so much for your comment!! And I’m really glad you liked the videos. I have very limited answers to your questions, but I’ll try to answer them! 1. You can’t control the color temps of the lights in your room. I don’t know if there was too much thought, as they’re pretty standard fluorescent lights. However I brought some of my own to make my room a bit of a nicer vibe. Also, the sauna has just the red bulb if you unscrew the white one a bit... 😜 2. Unfortunately I don’t know! And I don’t think so. 3. NASA definitely does research down there on people that are willing to be a part. My first winter there was a big project called HANAS and I wore a special watch and stuff that was collecting data the whole time for that. It’s the same watch Kelly wore when he stayed in the ISS for a year. I think my second winter there was also a project happening but it was a lot smaller scale and I wasn’t a part of it. I might have been too young. I don’t remember why I didn’t do it.
