I still remember my heart dropping after she was starting to get eaten by the Aragami.....when she committed suicide didn't freak me out much...since the disease pretty much took her over...it's just the thought she can't have a proper burial ever....and her dream just put icing on the cake for me to cry.....such a good anime...

I watched this 4-5 years ago and I just finished watching this episode, again. Man, this gets me every single time.... I just wanna share my thoughts with y'all. I shared my thoughts a few years ago but I might as well share my 2020 thoughts. So, when I first watched this, this really stabbed a sword through my chest. To me it's a simple S+ tier of an episode. So simple and perhaps predictable, yet I felt the sword twist and twist in my chest. I was really hoping that Lenka's sister at least would survive and is living safely somewhere else, when I first saw the family. But as the family died one by one, my hopes dwindled.... But that wasn't the reason why I felt so strongly for this anime. It was the simple bloody perfect execution of the events that led to Lenka joining Fenrir. When Lenka couldn't bear to leave his injured sister behind, I think I wasn't the only one who felt that way towards someone they love. But then, as some of the peeps already mentioned here, sometimes life gives you 2 choices and you can only pick 1. And when you simply can't pick 1 because you will lose the other (in Lenka's case, the 2 choices being either staying, perhaps try to carry, but ultimately die with his sister or he could follow his family's wish and survive), sometimes you don't get to choose at all, as the choices will be made for you, for better or worse. That was among the things that this anime reminded me. When Iroha found out that Lenka wouldn't leave her, they executed her grief, sadness, pain, subsequent happiness and acceptance so damn well and gracefully. That is how some people will react in real life if faced with a similar situation, no? I like to think that Iroha was really happy in the end that Lenka wouldn't leave her, and that she didn't want to mortally wound herself in front of her beloved brother. This anime/episode also reminded me that one doesn't really need to be blood related in order to be considered "family" with another. I've perhaps never seen an anime whereby in just a single episode, make me feel so much, as compared to the other episodes. The part where she said she picked his name, the reason why, and subsequent breakdown from Lenka was just too damn real..... Like seriously, that wail of agony from Lenka sounded so damn real, and if it were us, we would probably make a sound similar to what Lenka made. That really gets me. The facial expression to go with the wail was just too perfect also. I like to think that when Iroha saw that, she was made even more happy because it showed just how much Lenka loved her. What she said to Lenka next really impacted me when I first heard it.... Made me even more nihilistic because I was in an extremely bad shape back then. Yeah I know I may look like I'm simping for God Eater. Well, the game has a special place in my heart. When I saw that an anime about it was gonna be aired, I was so pumped. And yeah of course that helped me feel that "stab in your chest" sensation when I watched this episode. Literally never saw it coming because I expected an action packed, fanservice anime. Well, I got that, and more.... The transition from her impending death to what looks like Heaven also came to aid my thoughts that this is a S+ episode. Her being in Heaven and hugging Lenka, telling him that she loves him is perhaps the cream of the crop of this entire episode for me. And the dessert? Watching the Ogretails devour her while she died crying. I still really hope that she died feeling as little pain as possible. Finally, after listening to the ending song for like 8 episodes, I finally understood why that song sounded so poignant and sad yet hopeful at the same time. Though I didn't understand a word of it, the chorus, music and vocals really amplify that much more of the mood that us, the viewers, are supposed to feel. That's what I felt, anyways. This song is so damn fitting to the farewell and death scene, it's unbelievable. That final scream from Lenka before the story cuts to the present was the leftover meal, and boy did it sting just as hard. That scream right there, I think, is just what any one of us would sound like had we been in a similar situation whereby whatever we choose, we will, in a way, lose. I got the feeling that if Iroha didn't mortally wound herself, he would've stayed behind no matter what. Farewell once again, Iroha Utsugi. You'll always be in my Favourites list in MAL, and also will always be my MAL profile picture. I wish I had a sister like you. Until next time.

Man for real, I remember watching this anime like 8 years ago or something on a whim on Crunchy Roll or something idk. But 8 years later I still randomly think of that horribly sad moment of the girl pushing her brother away and dying as the monsters eat her, while she’s both sad that she’s alone but also happy she saved her brother. They had such a beautiful and amazing relationship and that’s such a tear jerker that we see either her past memories or like you mentioned possibly her heaven and ideal world with him before she dies.

Lenka lost his family not once but twice.. damn and the way Iroha dies makes ya wonder if heaven even exists or if it's a final stage of euphoria .. that's some twisted Evangelion sh-t.. later on he goes through even more suffering..but this particular scene went full on RE: Zero dark..this is just painful to watch.. This man should've lost his sanity at this point honestly.. his will to survive is crazy..
