R P D Design - Ken Class III Max Dentoform Cast Part D

Part D. We transfer the design onto the Ken Class III Max Dentoform Cast. You learn the proper placement of parts of the partial denture, some principles of design and tooth preparation. It is intended for the student or dentist who wishes to learn or review partial denture design. Parts A-C precede this tape. It is recommended that you start with Ken Class IV first and go backward to Ken Class I.

Obviously, bridges or implants would be a wonderful restorative treatment plan, but learn how to do successful partial dentures because there will always be a need for this mode of treatment because many patients can not afford bridge and implant restorations.

I do not know where you live, but I have a specialty in Prosthodontics. A prosthodontist may be available in your community. A good general dentist should also be able to give you good care. You may have to look around for one that meets your needs. I taught at the Univ. of Louisville, School of Dentistry for 35 years. If you have a University with a School of Dentistry near you, they will have Prosthodontists who practice dentistry at the school. You may also be able to get the type of care at the dental school.

Why did you put an auxiliary rest at the distal of the 1st molar? Is it to prevent food impaction in the area? Is it to add to the cross arch bracing? Added support? Some dentist would deem the additional rest excessive.

When you take a clasp assembly rest between two teeth, you place an embrasure rest. This prevents 1) food impaction between the two teeth and 2) the feeling of wedging between the two teeth. Any movement of the partial transfers equal pressure to the two teeth preventing the feeling like the metal is trying to drive the two teeth apart. You do not have to place arms on both of the teeth. in other words you do not have to do an embrasure clasp, just an embrasure rest.

I have these lectures with the goal of teaching the basic principles of RPD design. Later lectures in RPD or RDP II will go over ways of clasping for aesthetics. You certainly can alter the design for aesthetics.

The bar clasp would come from the anterior edentulous area in front of the desired tooth to be clasped. On the lingual I would not use the bar clasp as you are creating an ideal clothes line on which every kind of food can catch upon. I would prefer a cast c clasp which hugs the tooth

You can get colored pencils from an office supply store or an art supply store. Many people do art with colored pencils. They are also available from stores on the internet. Search colored pencils.
