Eureka Ensemble performs Amy Beach's Symphony in E-minor, Op.32 "Gaelic" (1894-96) at Church of the Covenant in Boston, MA as part of our "Sheltering Voices" concert.
Amy Beach (September 5, 1867 -- December 27, 1944) was an American composer and pianist. She was the first successful American female composer of large-scale art music.

@@danielmkubacki I think that I agree with @jgesselberty; good listening but it doesn't have the umph of some other symphonies. Not to be critical Ms. Beach, since I'm only a listener; some symphonies rise to the top more than others, but this is good work, no doubt about it.

One wonders had Beach been exposed more to musical currents beyond the conservative McDowell set, how far might she have expanded (this was written around the same time as Mahler's 2nd symphony and Nielsen's 1st Sym, and at the same time Ives is starting to burn conservative music to the ground). But then I think even if she been temperamentally drawn to more rule breaking, being a woman at the time had she trotted out something as pushy as a Nielsen, might not the establishment thrown their hands up and dismiss it as mere feminine excess.
