Artist Amy Sherald, the winner of this year’s Driskell Prize, creates portraits with the goal of making the walls of the museum better reflect the diversity of our country. Named in honor of groundbreaking art historian and artist David Driskell, the Driskell Prize honors an artist or art historian who is making a significant contribution to the arts of the African diaspora. In this video, take a peak inside Amy’s studio and hear her reflections on painting Michelle Obama, what she looks for in a sitter, and how her paintings are like her grandmother’s vintage photographs.
