The Legendary Joan Baez came unknown to the first edition of the Newport Festival in 1959 (She was driven there in a hearse !) 65 years later she is still there. The voice has gone away but the soul is still alive. I had the luck to see her in concert in France and Switzerland in the early 80's. What a Voice, what an emotion, what a strong message of hope and love: It impressed me in a definitive way ! Sorry for my poor english (studied so long ago !)

Elders and youth singing together, singing both old and new songs, is a central theme and goal of the folk music movement. There are three generations united here: Joan Baez and Taj Mahal are 83 and 82, respectively, Rhiannon Giddens is 47, and some of the other musicians on stage are in their 20s. So do as the elders say, and vote! And get all your friends and family to vote!

In 2024 I listen with recognition, affinity, deep solidarity bit also bewilderment and deep despair. I keep asking myself "where did we go wrong?" I mean way beyond the obvious "well, you just got crushed by The Man". How much did our own cultural naivety and complicity lead to the perma-crisis of today? Did we sell "Hope" but buy "Expediency" or was it the other way round? Too many who were raised as '69 hippies' moved to Silicon Valley or other ways of monetizing and financialization of all of life as an act of liberation. You know what? That's when politics lost control of economics and became its wage slave. In my darkest moments, I thin it is too late. In my brightest, I sing, "We Shall Not be Moved".

As long as the music has merits I don't mind the political messaging, but that doesn't make me an activist or religious or a this or a that. i'm a big fan of joan baez, of the 1968`-movement and i think i'm very, very leftist: pro choice (abortion rights), pro social benefits, pro obamacare, pro basic income, against tuition fees, against too much guns etc). but i'm also against all vaccine and mask mandates because of the human rule "my body, my choice". so my choice would be RFK jr. (if i was an US citizien - i'm not). joe biden's first(!) action as president was a mask mandate. it's not compatible with my leftist philosophy about human rights. and i'm anti trump. but such totalitarian things/crimes against the humanity like vaccine or mask mandates are in my opinion similar terrible like a president trump. and once more again: i'm very, very left. my greatest wish: RFK jr. as the next chief of the HHS (in a kamala harris government).
