For those complaining about the talk, Rhiannon gave band intros, thanked the sound technicians, then gave some very relevant context to the song. Nothing excessive about any of it.

The Legendary Joan Baez came unknown to the first edition of the Newport Festival in 1959 (She was driven there in a hearse !) 65 years later she is still there. The voice has gone away but the soul is still alive. I had the luck to see her in concert in France and Switzerland in the early 80's. What a Voice, what an emotion, what a strong message of hope and love: It impressed me in a definitive way ! Sorry for my poor english (studied so long ago !)

I grew up in a weird little place in British Columbia where, during the late 60’s a bunch of hippies and draft dodgers from the US moved into the little towns and cities in the river valleys and settled. Over 50 years ago I was the little blond kid stomping around in the dust in front of the stage (my version of dancing) at the Folk and Rock festivals. I remember songs like this and many more.

Elders and youth singing together, singing both old and new songs, is a central theme and goal of the folk music movement. There are three generations united here: Joan Baez and Taj Mahal are 83 and 82, respectively, Rhiannon Giddens is 47, and some of the other musicians on stage are in their 20s. So do as the elders say, and vote! And get all your friends and family to vote!

At 65,It is not my first time. I saw all the great performers from Dylan to John prime and when I wasn’t watching them, it was bluegrass festivals steel drivers with Chris Stapleton for starting out, Billy strings when he was a little boy and all the greats. Not once did I hear any of them talk about politics and who the best candidate was. There is no place for that while watching and listening to great music.

Yeah! A friend said to me "We need another Pete Seeger"; a few years later he left us. Taj Mahal and Pete's dedication brot me to learning to play the 5atring banjo and add Joan, Buffy, Odessa, Bob Dillon, and others to open my mind to the power of music (and peaceful protest}. Makes me want to busk again! PAY IT FORWARD! love you all. it's unfortunate to have to NOT vote Gop anytime. But when a moderate gets in they end up letting the weird ones rule.

In 2024 I listen with recognition, affinity, deep solidarity bit also bewilderment and deep despair. I keep asking myself "where did we go wrong?" I mean way beyond the obvious "well, you just got crushed by The Man". How much did our own cultural naivety and complicity lead to the perma-crisis of today? Did we sell "Hope" but buy "Expediency" or was it the other way round? Too many who were raised as '69 hippies' moved to Silicon Valley or other ways of monetizing and financialization of all of life as an act of liberation. You know what? That's when politics lost control of economics and became its wage slave. In my darkest moments, I thin it is too late. In my brightest, I sing, "We Shall Not be Moved".

@mermaid10x I live in North Carolina. I have been familiar with and known of Rhiannon Giddens for two decades now since she started out in Durham North Carolina with The Carolina Chocolate Drops. So, I'll offer you this advice. Before you assume something not in fact you should perhaps restrain yourself from putting your assumptions in writing to someone you don't know concerning what they know or don't know. The very fact that I said ," I'd been waiting on a video with Rhiannon and her banjo " should have been clue enough for you Bye

I'm South African and also in neither category. Having several Seeger, Baez, Dylan, Guthrie et al albums in my collection just means I have an affinity for that style of music. As long as the music has merits I don't mind the political messaging, but that doesn't make me an activist or religious or a this or a that. Very few people in my orbit know my political thoughts which is how I prefer it.

i'm a big fan of joan baez, of the 1968`-movement and i think i'm very, very leftist: pro choice (abortion rights), pro social benefits, pro obamacare, pro basic income, against tuition fees, against too much guns etc). but i'm also against all vaccine and mask mandates because of the human rule "my body, my choice". so my choice would be RFK jr. (if i was an US citizien - i'm not). joe biden's first(!) action as president was a mask mandate. it's not compatible with my leftist philosophy about human rights. and i'm anti trump. but such totalitarian things/crimes against the humanity like vaccine or mask mandates are in my opinion similar terrible like a president trump. and once more again: i'm very, very left. my greatest wish: RFK jr. as the next chief of the HHS (in a kamala harris government).
