Color science looks better on GoPro. The contrast is more life like. Ace Pro is overly HDRish, like they are afraid of any highlights. Lacks pop.

GoPro is warmer, but the 8K on the Insta360 looks like overly noise-reduced garbage 😂 Details are so muddy and smoothed out you lose all the benefits of 8K.

great review! To me I do like the dynamic range on ace pro a lot better, more natural, but it's very subjective. I really do enjoy the overall app experience, and it's free.

I just received my ace pro which I didn't even tested. when I press pause at 4:47 of your video, I can see that the sharpness is way better on the go pro on the snow, on the mountain in the background and on the cloud... same at 5:01, the sharpness is better on the gopro 12 when you look at the jacket or on the ground...

What you didnt mention that your face is not in focus at normal vlogging distances. I love the camera, but this really defeats the object of the flip up screen. Its exactly the same as the Action 3 when it first came out.

This is quite an interesting video. I am a big fan of the Insta360 cameras, specifically the X3 and 1 Inch cameras and use them quite often. They are great for enhancing creativity with dynamic shots when it comes to rotating the camera's perspective in the edit. However, in my opinion, the footage can look soft and mushy when not in the best lighting conditions or even simple casual shots - as much of the footage does in this comparison video with the AcePro. I do in fact reduce the sharpness to 'low' on the Insta X3's and 1 Inch cameras so that the footage does not appear to be from a 2002 overly sharpened and highly saturated flip phone video. In fact, I'm ok with the Insta's HDR video and the 'less sharpened' image given the output of the dynamic camera angles of the 360 camera - the viewer tends to be more captivated by the creativity rather than it needing the be tack sharp. However, the footage in this comparison video appears mushy and out of focus - especially when comparing it side by side with GoPro12. This is strictly my opinion (and perhaps many prefer the subject of the video to appear 'mushy'), however, in my opinion, in 2024 this is not acceptable for a single lens camera (perhaps a 360 camera, but not a single lens camera). Simply pausing the video several times on the side by side comparison shots, it's easy to see the obvious difference in both image quality and depth in the shadows between the 2 cameras. I would not argue that any particular camera is 'better' over the other, but rather choose a camera for it's intended use, user experience and expected results with the final product. The AcePro camera seems to be great for vlogging with all the features and flippy screen, however, GoPro12's stabilization seems to be better suited for high impact activities such as MTB (while keeping the center field of focus tack sharp). It's clear that GoPro fails in low light situations, but this comparison video makes it glaringly obvious that it outshines in maintaining or even establishing a focus point. However, I do think the Insta's cameras perform better in different scenarios - especially with battery life, HDR video and shooting underwater. It is certainly true that everyone's taste in image quality is based upon their liking, user experience, workflow and results of the finished product. I too love the idea of the flip screen, but not at the cost of compromising video quality (especially for a single lens camera). At best, it's a step in the forward direction to eventually Insta360 releasing the next '360 Action Camera' in 8k. I do say Bravo to Insta for continuously making advancements with their products and I look forward to seeing what's next.

They both look very digital and processed with GoPro being a lot warmer. Getting 8K on action cameras is just overkill for most people. I'd much rather have more dynamic range and a higher bitrate than more resolution.

8K video was never a factor for this camera and was never advertised or marketed by Insta360, the 8K sensor was actually designed for the Clarify Zoom and why that beats the other cameras. 8K was not even in pre-tested models, they stumbled on this mode and decided to open it up on launch. It's perfectly usable and I agree with you that it's overkill now as most people don't have the 8K hardware to support it, but don't forget, that's what we said when 4K came out and now a standard. That said, even 5.3K on the GoPro is difficult and requires good hardware to do any kind of post processing. I think we will see more of this 8K as future firmware comes out but will be ahead of the game to the big "2" as GoPro has announced 8K on the GP13 being launched in Sept. 2024. ;)

GoPro looks like it has too much of a sepia look to me Insta360 looks more like a processed shot though.

yup. both you'd have to fix in post, but I think a minute sepia color would be easier to fix than the wrong kind of grain.

Thank You for video review but sadly Go Pro 12 is not a competitor vs DJI and Insta 360 in current run, image quality is good in day light but to thats not all. Go pro need to improve too much to come in the competition list, technology brought improvements in other action cameras. Best of luck Go Pro for next model.

In my opinion, action cameras should be so far ahead of where they currently are. Why is it that phone companies, like Apple, are making really good tiny sensor phone cameras, but the image quality coming from companies solely focused on making cameras looks half as good?!

This is the result of GoPro being laidback and not pushing innovation for 3-4 years, Insta360 came with a first gen camera that blows gopro out of the water in most of areas. To me Gopro looks oversharpened and the color is too saturated, not sure if you can fix it with another color profile. Then the lowlight is drastically different between both cameras and the clarity zoom / extra resolution is another winner for the Ace Pro.

Both cameras are good and have their strengths, to say one is better over the other is unproductive as everyone uses their action cams differently. Overall, I would go with ace because it has features that critical for MY shooting style. The low light quality was a deal maker for me, users have been asking for better low light and better zoom in action cams for years, well here it is. My personal opinion and only mine, I find the GoPro over exposed most times and always have this yellow tinge to the video, obviously we can post color grade that out, but for the average user who don't know how to do that, this is important "out of the camera" result. I'm not even going to bring up the overheat issues with both GP and DJI cameras, you guys already know the facts about that whereas this camera has ZERO heat issues even shooting in usable 8K mode, that alone makes this a worthy competitor.

Exactly. Gopro 12 is a great camera but ace pro is offering better features for your average users along with easier editing for noobs. People always go on about color grading bla bla but many of us will never do that stuff.

downsides to ace pro, lens is not a quick change so if it's borked, it's borked. That might be a huge deal. Also for really rugged stuff, the screen might rip off. Maybe not. In the still quality you showed the gopro in some ways looked better. But let's be real. printing will be MORE than enough. People used to print posters from a 4 and 6 megapixel images just fine. The larger the print, the further the distance usually anyway. I think the gopro slomo is better, in terms of higher res, but then again not everyone likes the UI of gopro (I didn't like that much). Gopro support will likely be better overall. Also people forget there's also the ACE regular one without the zeiss lens. Might be an even better deal depending on needs.
