I wanted to call this video "a night in the strange" but I was worried it'd get demonetized. Good thing this replacement title really rolls of the tongue.

I hope it was worth the wait. I’d like to thank everyone who helped me out with this video, shout out to my mate CloudCuckooCountry for lending his cunty Aussie voice to this (in addition to helping with some behind the scenes stuff), please check his channel out, he makes really fantastic book reviews that are sorta similar to my videos and is super fuckin’ underrated (kzbin.info). Big thank you to Finn/finnxmusic for letting me use his song “in luv with you” at the end of this video, it was exactly what that bit needed. All of his music is amazing and you should give it a listen or 2 or 5,354 (soundcloud.com/finnxmusic), and as always thank you to my boi David for mixing and mastering the Voiceover. I’m really sorry that this video took me so long to make, as you can hopefully tell by the final product it was a huge undertaking for me for a number of reasons and I learned a lot by working on it. I appreciate everyone being so patient and waiting for it so that I could take the time to make it as good as I could, y’all are rad. If you want to follow me on social media you can check out my Twitter @ShammyTV (twitter.com/ShammyTV), and if you’d like to support me directly so I can keep making dumb shit like this you can head on over to my Patreon (patreon.com/shammy), all donations are greatly appreciated. There should be a big update coming soon, as well as an increase in Shamboy related content, so be on the lookout for that, and thanks again for watching :)

I remember the "Don't stab people" PSA. It was approximately 30 seconds long and was a guy saying "Hey, let's go stab that guy," to which his friend responded with "This is why you're in a maximum security prison, David."

In 1982 ABC actually made an after school special about an inmate on alabama's death row (John Evans III) who was about to be executed for a murder he'd committed in 1977. Evan's actually appeaered in the special talking directly to the audience about "good and bad choices" and the "results of such choices", he was electrocuted in yellow mama about two weeks after the special aired. You can find it here on youtube, I think it's called "final choice" or something along those lines.

Watching this video made me realise that the reason I like Life is Strange so much more than other people is that the characters in it talk like teens who learnt English as a second language, trying to imitate the stuff they heard on TV... and I grew up attending an international school in a foreign country, surrounded by kids who learnt English as a second language, trying to imitate the stuff they saw on TV.

jack agjonraw as someone who speaks Spanish but speaks English as a second language I can completely agree on your theory. Even all of my friends here speak English too. So yeah, LiS will be better received by non-native English speakers.

I can understand that. What I'm talking about is this: the kids at my school, who all mostly learned English as a 2nd language, with lots of inspiration from American Tv, ended up talking like the kids in Life is Strange. So I don't mind the dialogue. If you went through the same experience and think differently, then I guess my experience was unique. And if you didn't, but just learnt English as a 2nd language, then I guess we don't actually disagree on anything.

At 16:22 you said "Maybe its because I also dropped out of college at 20 after having a mental breakdown as a last ditch effort to preserve my rapidly declining mental health, maybe its because I can relate to the feeling of returning to home to a disapproving but begrudgingly accepting family and constantly having to remind myself that their disappointment stems from wanting the best for me to keep it from eating me alive from the inside out" and honestly that is one of the best delivered truly relatable things i've ever heard spoke and made me feel like you are an actual person unlike a lot of fake youtube persona's, so even though your Shammy character is an act I feel I got to know a person for who they are.

Well. I came here 3 years ago after finishing life is strange, and made me curious about night in the wood. Few months later, on a sale, I purchased it. Back when I saw this video, I had to stop it after 10 mins to don't spoil myself. Indeed it took me few hrs to love night in the woods with all my guts. I kept this little gem for 3 years. I kept it playing just few hrs here and there, when I was feeling "grim". Lately life kicked my face again so I slowly finished this little treasure, that I have kept in time as a tiny bliss. So here I am, after 3 years, to watch the last part of the video. I don't think any game touched me deep as night in the woods. It's..... It's a game that speaks deeper than it seems. It takes you deep in that place inside of you that you don't always want to face. I think I will play it again with some differences, just to catch something more. It is... Touching. I can't find better words. Anyway thanks Shammy, thanks for making me playing this game. You were right.

What's interesting to me is that I didn't actually play the game myself, or rather I still have yet to. However, I did follow Commander Holly and Ross play through it. Their voices helped bring life to the world and make it a very enjoyable experience (to me at least; I can imagine that it'd be annoying as hell to a lot of people). And their usually minimal commentary on the game itself aside from narration actually allowed me to absorb the story and develop my own feelings toward the characters without being extremely influenced by Holly's and Ross's remarks (which I think is something I usually miss out on when watching somebody play a story-driven game). And it was cathartic. I felt like Mae and (apparently) Shammy as well. I don't think I was as affected because, once again, it was a second-hand experience. But the portrayal of becoming a young adult who's unable to fit into the expected mold that's been presented to young people for the last few decades was incredibly accurate and satisfying. Sorry for typing so much, btw

Almost too relatable.. Maybe 'Night in the Woods' is a better game for people over 18. Y'know, once you're forced into real adulthood to the point where you start behaving more childish and selfish than ever in a last ditch effort to not grow up. I haven't played this game yet but I have a feeling it'll be sad, not in a 'this situation is meant to be sad' but more in a 'look at your life from an outside perspective' kinda sad. At least that's the kinda impression I got from the review.

Lol you are absolutely right, even though i love life is strange. I didn't feel the awkwardness of the dialogue cuz im not a native speaker, so it sounded funny at most. You dont know what is cringe untill you hear Brazilian lúcio saying "vamo esculachá" in overwatch. Although i admit the potential of the time travel mechanic was almost completely wasted by loopholes and inconsistencies, i think the puzzles and situations it created were fantastic. Somehow i did not experience any bug while i was playing. One thing that perturbed me was the weakness of the characters personalities, in the sense that any happenings would throw their mind completely off rails, like Chloe discovering that Rachel was fucking that drug dealer, or Warren having a fight with Nathan. Maybe its just the emo hipster music, the fact that i have a thing for lesbians and my ignorance towards the references, but somehow the game hit me in the feels, i even added the soundtrack to my spotify list

The ending is so poetic. It shows him watching your own video, alone. He’s alone because nobody accepted him because of him having an owl head, but finding someone else like him (you) and finally deciding to run away from his disappointed parents and friends. He sprayed the message because he always told them he would leave and they never listened or cared, but now he knows there are better people in the world that he could connect to and would appreciate him. It’s so beautiful and I cried so much.

Why do you hold back these feels from me, Shamu? I really liked life is strange, and struggled to make it through night in the woods, but I really appreciated this video. Your criticism and praise was very fair, you did point out the holes in life is strange and gave me a new appreciation for night in the woods. I’m in my last year of high school, so our perspectives of the two games are going to be vastly different, but you allowed me to understand how night in the woods is so gut wrenching and how close to home it is for some people. I think I’ll need to replay these two games later on, but for now I’d like to say that this was a really enlightening video. Keep doing what you’re doing man.

Dang, probably the harshest remarks I've seen on LiS -- I'm actually a fan of the story overall (mainly the dynamic between Max and Chloe and the blending of genres), BUT I really enjoyed seeing someone call it out on its bullshit, ESPECIALLY the ending. I mean, I LOVE this game and even I agree its ending was just...bad, so very bad. =_=;; And that said, I VERY much agree that NitW is the better story and the better game. I actually love both of them, but amen that NitW is just...better, overall. Fun critique. It's way harsher (on both games, really) than I'd be but it wasn't just pointless hate, it was intentionally laid out, personal criticism, which is much more engaging and needed in the realm of video game reviews.
@Lupiterz
@Lupiterz 4 жыл бұрын
I love both games, and this video really accurately summarised why I love NiTW so much more. It really hit closer to home for me, too. It's harder to understand the struggle of characters in a world where consequence is essentially meaningless vs a world where consequences of the main character's (Mae's) actions literally made the story.

In regards to indie music over filters, I hate them as well. It all feels so fake and always draws me out of the experience. I almost always feel emotional though that emotion is frustration towards the creator. If there are endings that always gets me emotional in a good way, it's when a creator doesn't really care if the ending is cool or not but rather enjoyable and fits within the narrative. Nacho libre's end fight is my prime example of this for me. Sure it's supposed to be comedy but it's very satisfying to watch and I still get teary eyed when nacho flies through the air. Something about it screams, "it's been an honor entertaining you." And somewhere deep inside me replies, "Thank you"

Night In The Woods = A heartfelt thoughtful coming of age drama in the vein of a good john hughes movie. Life Is Strange and its prequel = a bad very special episode of a mediocre 80's sitcom that only exists so the writers show how "serious" they can be when they're not writing fart jokes one liners and pratfalls.

Life is Strange is such a weird game. On the one hand I think the game is extremely overrated in my opinion but then again I think some people are just trying why to hard to hate it. Life is Strange felt to me a lot like it had some good ideas, but constantly swerved away from the developments that made sense and would've helped into irrelevant wastes of time. It felt like the writers had in mind to do a lot of stuff that would've contextualized things, but then just... didn't.

I know it's been over a year since this video came out but I found something cool. At 15:28 when he is talking about sprite glitches to further the fact that these are minor distractions that can be passed as stylistic he clips in front of his computer. I don't know if this was supposed to be the character stepping forward or it was a really well-hidden addition to the argument itself but it actually kinda impressed me.

I don't really agree that life is strange is bad i think its pretty good for the time it was made, the slang is pretty bad but i can get past it, i believe its more story driven than having an actual theme, Life is strange was my childhood and i love it for what it is, i recently played the game for the first time, and i also did have bugs in episode 2 and 5 but it is an older game and it did take me out of it. Life is strange is only of the only games that have made me cry multiple times. I haven't played night in the woods/watched it since it first came out but i didn't really vibe with it as much as i did with life is strange, but this is still a great video. I respect your opinions and have a nice day and or night

The whole point of a story oriented game should be to make the player care about the characters, so that, whether or not you play good or evil, law or chaos, or something in between, you feel some kind of emotion for a character affected by your choices. Good players would be unsatisfied if they didn't have some kind of reason to care about how their choices impact characters, and evil players would be unsatisfied if they didn't feel some kind of guilt or regret for their decisions, or even a feeling of hatred for a character.

I liked Life is Strange, yet I find this video fantastic. It made me rethink how I feel about these games. I think part of the reason I liked Life is Strange when I played it is I haven't read The Catcher in the Rye, but I rolled my eyes hard when I realized that Max's name is a direct reference to the book. I have to say, this channel has certainly earned my viewership.

I watched this video 5 years ago. When I was still in highschool trying to get my shit together to go to college, loe and behold(I said I got my shit together, I didn't fucking excel, I'm still a dumbass mf) I managed to get out of highschool and get accept into art school, and about 5 months in I got admited to the ER for nearly killing myself. I still think back to the ride from my apartment to the hospital, flashing in and out of conciousness, and waking up in a hospital bed. Eventually I got "better" and got back to that sigma grind set, then a covid out break happened locking me in my room for about 4 months. During all these wonderful and whimsical events I was alone, not cause of some distaste for the world and those around me, no, I was away from home and couldn't make friends cause my self esteem was so goddamn low I wouldn't even put in the effort out of fear of people coming to hate me. To this day I still can't complement anything about myself. I made friends but I had my walls, still do, its hard for me to open up, ironic I know but anonymity compells people to spill their guts out. So a year passes by and I some how make it to my second year, kinda sorta, I'll still classified as a first year cause of an issue with documents. If I could I would execute every beauracrat I could get my hands on. So I start my second year and my fear of fail grabs my by the balls and starts squeezing. Eventually it takes over and my genius solution to that is to not try, you can't be a failure of you didn't put in an attempt to begin with. I'm seeing a therapist but, its hard keeping your brain from sabotaging itself on the daily. Eventually I go back to college reinvigorated ready to succeed... then my grandma died. I was destroyed, Spent 3 weeks in my room alone crying or just staring at my phone. Eventually I had to go back but damn was I not ready, my mind was still muddy. I felt emptier than ever and I didn't know what to do. Eventually I managed to put a lid on feeling like shit for a bit. Got out again, started cooking, started doing work again, even went to parties and events. Then I go to my friends place. We had a friend who we hadn't seen in a bit, MIA but he joined us that night, and he seemed off, tired, but it was late 3am, anyone would be tired at 3am. The day after I get home, my friend told me he had passed away. He had commited and at that point I couldn't anymore. Fear of failure grabbing me by the balls, loss weighing on me, I couldn't even go to their funerals, I was in tatters, I had to go back home. And I am home, in a city in Africa that has nothing but dirt roads connected to dirt roads that lead to roads that lead to nothing. You may be wonder "Jesus why is this guy trauma dump in youtube comments". Well this is a weird way of saying thinks for giving me something to force me out of bed. Loving Night in The Woods so far. Really makes me think like a nutcase at the end of my rope. Its also a reason to get out of bed, have to sit in my chair at the very least to play the game. So yeah thanks Shammy. Please stop reposting porn and shit on your twitter I don't wanna scroll through like 12 pages of vore and shit just to find out whats going on with the channel. I beg please.

I don't know how much it will help, but it is cathartic at the very least. Bea's story is amazing, but so is Gregg's so it's worth a second playthrough eventually, too. I always pick Angus after the library (to keep things real vague) as I think it contains the heart of the game.

Your criticism falls apart when comparing it to catcher and The Rye because you fail to realize that many of Holden's characteristics are actually given to other characters. You are trying to have Max be a Holden clone because of her name, that's not good criticism.
@ladybirdg5658
@ladybirdg5658 4 жыл бұрын
Another thing Life is Strange and Night in the Woods have in common is opportunity to live in the moment. Like, in the morning, you can let Mae/Max/Chloe lie in bed listening to the background music as long as you want, then there are moments where you can just sit and watch Max play guitar or there'll be a half-minute segment where Mae and Gregg are just riding a bike to music. It's nice having moments where you can live in the universe of the game without having to actually DO anything in order to be stimulated. ALSO, in Night in the Woods, there are a couple places where there's no music or moving things, (there's a cliff by the church past Bruce's camp where Mae just stares off the cliff and never says anything about it). I think these moments are even better because it provides quiet places like there are in real life and it gives you an opportunity to meditate on things without, again, actually doing anything in-game.

@@Hammerhead547 some people love it because it makes them feel superior to their younger selves, which they should if they've grown past it. I know this is 4 years later but same man I remember watching this video when it first came out and it still sticks with me on such a personal level for some reasons and shammy perfectly encapsulates one of the main reasons with the "told you so" joke at the end which has always stuck with me, and not to mention how growing up watching his videos positively affected my writing in school and college because I was able to objectively view things because of his self aware smart ass commentary that I may or may not have borrowed a few lines from and put into essays and whilst they definitely didn't help my grade lol they got a positive reaction out of my teachers every time so I guess I have to thank shammy for being a brick in the wall that created a larger than I would like to admit part of my personality.
