After harvesting, hulling and selling 700 lbs of black walnuts. I am closing this years chapter of the black walnut harvest. With a bang! OR a crack really....
This nut is seriously the toughest nut I've ever cracked. But my neighbor let me borrow his amazing nut cracker and it made quick work of these black walnuts.

My husband and I moved here to Missouri a year ago last September. We love it here I am so glad to hear you are enjoying the move. We came from the Oregon Coast to the Poplar Bluff area.Where did you move from?

This video is excellent. You asked for tips... 1) After you get the walnuts husked/hulled, you should wash them with water and aggressively stir them with a power drill. Get more of the dry blackened husk material off of them, so they taste better and are less messy to crack. The husk material left on the shell will soak into the nutmeat and make slightly more bitter. Plus some of the dry black husk dusk can get on the nutmeat when cracking (which you can rinse off with water, but it is better to just avoid the husk dust all together by washing the husked nut better before curing them.) 2) When ready to crack, soak the nuts in water for 12-24 hours, this will soften the shell and make it a lot easier to crack. You will avoid busting the nut meat to tiny pieces and you will get much more meat out of them. This is especially helpful, if the nuts were stored for 1+ years and are super dry.

I use vice grips, you can adjust for the nut size, and even a person with bad hands can do it.

My Nana, born in 1911, picked them up , put them in the driveway , shelled them , baked with them and never complained! I knew how much work it was so I did not want to do it. This year I am, to make my mom happy 😁💜

I pick black walnuts every year. Only thing I know to do is a tea towel (so they don’t fly everywhere and a hammer. I’ve never heard of that contraption before. That looks so neat!

I have a 5 gallon crock full of walnuts I have up on cracking a few years ago. I harvested probably 4 years ago. Well I decided to try a few before I got rid of them just to see how they were. They are still good! I am now getting proficient at cracking black walnuts with a hammer and using wire clippers to snip out any trapped meat. I now get fairly consistent large pieces of meat out of the shells. I am also harvesting this year's walnuts and plan on making this a yearly thing now that I have gotten decent at cracking them. I had planned on getting a $180 GGG but I might hold off and hone my hammer and clipper method for now....the Goodie Getter is surely a tempting but at the moment we have other things we could use $180 for (like our baby girl due at the end of March 2024!).
