In this film (with English, Turkish, Spanish subtitles) a herder, László Sáfián, speaks about his pasture, livestock and dog, and the inextricable links between all these. Laci, the herder speaks about why he uses iron and copper bells, how he portions the pasture and designs daily and weekly menues, how the family works together, and how he learnt and transmits this knowledge.
László Sáfián was born into a multi-generational herder family in Hungary. In this film he explains what he means under close herded grazing on a patchy, high nature value, semi-natural pasture.
We are experimenting with ways to show traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of herders in its original setting and with its original pace using slow films and herder-scientist dialogues, discussing the fine-tuned decisions the herder made on this afternoon providing some socio-ecological context as well.
The film was made by Zsolt Molnár (ethnoecologist, ELKH Center for Ecological Research, Hungary) and Sándor Karácsony (camera man and film maker).
One of our aims with this film is to motivate others to make similar narrated slow films in other socio-ecological settings to help the global-level knowledge exchange of herders and pastoralists among themselves and with ecologists, rangeland, livestock and behavioural scientists, conservationists, teachers, decision makers and the wider public.

While travelling in Crete, we passed by goats being herded in the hillside. The sound of the bells mesmorized me and I often visit the sounds in my mind, aching to hear them again. Thank you for bringing that music back to me. My favourite quote, "we have to leave at least as much pasture after we’re gone as there was when we arrived.” Knowledge to live by.

This is powerful, quite insightful! Pastoralism is truly a knowledge-intensive system. Herders know so much than we do, lets learn from!

Absolutely fascinating! The sound of their bells ringing in the background of the conversation is meditative! We should follow this approach to film making in other sectors as well, where there's so much indigenous knowledge which remains unknown to the scientific community.

What a documentary! Surely local herders are invaluable knowledge tanks, a precious school that should be tapped into for sustainability and overall environmental health and conservation goals. You never achieve these while ignoring this rich knowledge. Congratulations Dr. Molnar and your crew on a powerful piece

Finally what I expected from a good documentary on the importance of traditional herding and shepherding for nature conservation and food security is here. Congratulation to all of you who did this fantastic job. I hope other countries with rich history in pastoralism create such documentaries (Iran, Mongolia, Spain, Finland, Sweden, Norway etc.).
