Essence TV Interview with Susan Taylor from 12/20/87.
Phyllis Linda Hyman (July 6, 1949 - June 30, 1995) was an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Hyman is best known for her music during the late 1970s through the early 1990s, some of her most notable songs were "You Know How to Love Me" (1979), "Living All Alone" (1986) and "Don't Wanna Change the World" (1991). Hyman also performed on Broadway in the 1981 musical based on the music of Duke Ellington, Sophisticated Ladies, which ran from 1981 until 1983. The musical earned her a Theatre World Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical. - wikipedia

It bewilders me that she didnt think she was good enough. Her voice stands alone in a category all HER OWN!!Didnt think she was beautiful enough??? She was drop dead gorgeous!!! We often appear confident but are dying inside.....she was dying inside.

Many great musician and artists have that point of view of themselves. It's very complicated. But it serves to keep the challenges and never hitting a plateau and resting in a place of comfort if you will. Once they get comfortable it's over. Prince , Isaac Hayes , Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis more had a huge amount of self critical same

One of a kind. But also a complicated woman. People didn’t talk about Bipolar disorders back then, but this woman suffered through it and drug and alcohol addiction. A magnificent voice and a stunning statuesque beauty, what could have gone wrong right? She didn’t transition well during the 80s and that was mostly a personal choice. She wasn’t going to sing the electric keyboard R&B dance pop tunes that was merging with black soul at the time. “Let hear it for the boy” by Denice Williams is just one example. I remember there was also somebody always messing with her about things. The gossip cats had started a rumor that she wasn’t black, then OTHER PEOPLE started a beef between Phyllis and Angela Bofill that didn’t really exist. Much had been said about her inability to keep a relationship functioning but again that could have been her bipolar disorder as well. She was a classic standout from the by gone era of Evelyn Champagne and Patrice Rushen. The songs weren’t about hating men either. Men, we could relax and listen and enjoy it too. Always wondered if she really intended to kill herself or an accidental overdose.

Interesting post. I don't think it was an accident though as she tried several times to end it all. I think she would have been here today and still singing live if she had been properly diagnosed and treated.

I remember walking passed the Apollo Theater early the day she was to perform. Only to make it back to Philly later on to find out she passed. Her strong & sultry voice has left an imprint in my mind. I pray she finally found the peace she often sung about in her magical ballads. Rest well Queen... 🦋🙏🏽🦋

REAL QUEENS. Educated, dignified, articulate, sophisticated, beautiful, classy, feminine. All of the garbage out here today self-proclaiming that title need to take a very close look at what REAL QUEENS look, sound, and present as. So sad that the demonic industry used, abused, and spit out this woman with actual talent. A real artist. But that is and has been too often the case.

i find it curious and terribly interesting that phyllis at one time thought of herself as a mediocre singer. to me, an ear that has been listening and loving musicians since 3 yrs old whose now 65, i've heard few singers, including nancy wilson who she idolizes, who capture a lyric as beautifully as phyllis. nancy;s pure elegance, where phyllis is extremely passionate and seems to be capable of morphing from elegance to desperation, with in my view is more honest, authentic, brave. i met phyllis once, and when i told her how important her music had been in my life, she appeared resistant to that fact, but hard to know maybe that day was just that day. still she remains one of the greatest in my view right up there with nina, sarah, dinah, cleo, patti, and my absolute no question chaka. i miss her presence still. but i have her wealth of music. just sayin

Singers have their own lanes. And they can coexist amongst each as well. Just like Sade was doing her own thing, Anita Baker, Toni Braxton, Angels Bofill etc. Phyllis could’ve had a beautiful career had she been managed better. y’all act like we listen to Whitney Houston 24/7.
