Here are some old recordings that could only be partially restored by AI. Note that these are not the best results.

It's safe to say Édouard-Léon de Martinville's singing doesn't pose a threat to Frank Sinatra's legacy. But, seriously, I'd like to see what AI would do with other historic and barely listenable material - such as the 1889 recording of Johannes Brahms playing the piano. That thing sounds like the piano was underwater and someone was dragging either crumpled tinfoil or a cheese grater on the recording horn. It doesn't get much more historic than that! Best wishes from Vermont 🍁

I have some more restored recordings planned. The AI generally has issues when early recordings are 80-90% background noise. I tried the Brahms recording but it removed little of the static. I believe its a question of time until the public has access to AI which could remove background noise from barely audible recordings.

@@arago8649 Years ago, a friend of my created a stir when he shared his restoration of the Brahms record. My friend is German and a pianist. His restoration had surface noise, of course. But, the speaker who introduces the recording was heard sharp and clear. The piano sounded rich and full. An unbelievable achievement in historic restoration. Also, a total fake. My friend recorded himself speaking and playing the piano - then used a few tricks to degrade the sound so it sounded like a convincing facsimile of a reasonably clean cylinder recording. He included two obvious signs the restoration was a hoax. He released it on an April Fool's Day - and the recording ends with "Brahms" saying, "Thank you for your wonderful invention, Mr. Edison. Did you steal the idea from Nikola Tesla?" 😸 Have a safe and enjoyable week.

1860... that's just unbelievable. I knew about the Au Clair de la Lune recording, had no idea there was more from 1860. Only 11 years earlier and we could have heared Chopin's voice, or even playing the piano.
