According to me, the calculations he did there are wrong. Actually, you'll win only 3/4 of the times. Here's how. Logic 1: There are four possibilities of your friend picking 2 cards. (Red,Red), (Red,Black), (Black,Red) and (Black,Black). Since they are picking a red card in 3 cases, you'll win 3/4 of the times. Logic 2: Where did he go wrong? He considered the first card being only black, which gives value 1/6. He didn't consider the first card picked being Red. Then chances of second card being black is 2/3. P(B,B) = 1/2×2/3 = 1/3 Take the average of these. (1/6+1/3)/2 = (1/2)/2 = 1/4 So you are losing 1/4 of the times and winning 3/4 of the times.

Of all things I remember seeing this very shell game situation pop up in a Yugioh manga. The protagonist came in after his friend kept being scammed by this game, and then made it into an even game by adding a Joker. Get two of the same and you win, but if you draw the Joker you lose immediately. If both players have one of each color it's a tie. The odds of drawing the Joker are always 1/5 so it is a completely fair game.
