Good job. I'm a long-time keyboard player with a focus on mixolydian (Blues, Gospel, Country), Ionian (Pop, Contemporary) but I've always wanted to dabble in Jazz, but as far, few sites explain basic Jazz adequately. I understand the 2,5,1, the 9ths and 11ths...but what I put out still doesn't sound like improv Jazz. That's what I'm looking for. Best, Fezzy Pepper

Great idea for a lesson, Jens. Chord melody can be intimidating. I like the thought process of establishing the "normal" basic melody and shell chords and then look to expand and reharmonize to make it more interesting. Well done.

This is very good! I actually set myself the goal for this year to make or learn a chord melody arrangement of one jazz standard each month to improve my playing in 2022! Started out with learning and revamping your arrangement of Autumn Leaves, then moved on to doing a version Paul Davids' arrangement of My Funny Valentine, and now I'm doing my own take of All The Things You Are (not so very subtly "inspired" by the Joe Pass recording on Virtuoso). Great to get some fresh input on how to do this!

Thank you! It is just reverb and delay. I am not 100% sure anymore, but I think I used a plate reverb and an analog delay with some pitch modulation, that is probably what you hear as chorus since I am not using chorus :)

can you please do a video or two on learning how to figure out the chords. like if someone asks you play D sharp major 7. how do you find that chord on guitar?
@DatHombre2 жыл бұрын
You should firstly know the intervals of the chord. Like for example how all maj7 chords have a maj3rd and maj7th, and how min7th chords have a min3rd and min7th, etc. Then you should start learning the intervals on the fretboard. Like going (except for the g string since its a half step higher than all rest) one string down (down as in to the lower note thicker string, not "closer to the ground") from the root note is a 5th, or one string up+one fret down is a maj3rd, etc. Learning arpeggios can help cement your interval memorization. With that, you can hypothetically make any chord you'd need. You should also lookup "jazz guitar licks maj7 inversions (and min7+dom7). Definitely not an expert on this by any means nor do I know if that was all obvious to you n you were meaning something different/more specific, but I triiiied

hi jens hope you are doing well.i was wondering if you could tell me some jazz songs that have a cmaj6.i am amazed of how hard it is to play it and like how it sounds.
@JensLarsen2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Anything with the root in the melody on the tonic, so All Of Me, Pennies From Heaven, How About You will work well with a maj6 chord. It is of course also useful at the end of most standards since that is also the root note of the key.
@johnjacquard8632 жыл бұрын
there is an abstract level of detail i like to thin in as a type of scaffolding to build upon. ( example in key of C major) D6- C#dim7 C6 - Bdim7 -------- Bmin6---C#dim7 Amin6---Bdim7 so how it works is C6 is the center focus and you have your 4 voicings per octave. D6 is the next level of detail and these are upper ext. they can resolve down to C6 also Bdim7 is the dominant function C#dim7 is the dom function but can resolve down to Bdim7 also that all maps to the fretboard centered around C CEG next portion is the relative minor Amin6 in 4 voicings per octave \ Bmin6 is 4 voicings per octave of upper EXT but can also resolve down to Amin6 and finally we have the same identical Bdim7 with C# dim7 upper EXT. this whole structure is centered around the C6 it perfectly attaches to the more simplistic scaffolding of A minor pentatonic . its not that these are strict rules, more like a relationship scaffolding for example on the portion of Amin6 instead of the ordinary Bdim7 - C#dim7 dom portion to go with it. if we treat Amin6-Bmin6 as a Cmaj13#11 then insteadof Bdim7-C#dim7 we can use Abmin6 - Bbmin6 as a dom function that wraps around Amin6 so these things are malleable. a type of scaffolding . ( at the most detailed scale of detail all 12 notes connect back to C major - A rel minor) the simplest scale of detail is the C6 across entire fretboard ( reason is becuase C ceg, A ace) major and its rel min

It is not about how many chords you know. It is about what you can do with them. Thinking of them as separate things and not being able to put them together in music is just holding you back from getting there
