She means it isn't kept in a refrigerator. How often when you order water in Germany, does it have a layer of condensation on it from the temp difference between the fridge and room temp? (I just took my water bottle out of my fridge and in about 10 seconds it has a layer of condensation. I worked yesterday selling beverages at a city party and we had a refrigerated trailer that we kept the beverages in, but even in there it wasn't cold enough to make the drinks as cold as I'd like. And then we had the crates we were selling out of out in 24 degree weather, and every single person who bought a drink from us got a 24 degree warm beverage. Beer, water, Fritz cola. I felt like apologizing every single time. (And why'd we even have a "cold" trailer!?!)

The water here is chilled. So to european standards it is cold. But in the states, water is served ice cold with a lot of ice cubes in it to keep it cold. So to an american the water feels warm. But I've been to the uk before and the water here in germany is served just like in the uk. So if you consider the water in the uk to be served cold, it's the same in germany.

So in My environment, the water has normal refrigerator temperature in all stores, so 6-8 ° C, in the U.S. water is often cooled down to 1 ° C and as said above often served with ice, and these 5-7 degrees can one then already seem warm.

Hahaha, I thought the same thing! A bit of a clueless video. Like many people remarked, water is served chilled but not with ice. Honesty is assumed. We totally have modern gigantic tractors. We live close together after literally thousands years of invading armies. Quark is curd, yes. But it is not a bag, it is a pocket. Americans use the word pocket for stuffed bakery goods. People do not bring their bottles to the supermarket to recycle them - they are bringing them there to get their deposit back. Streets are narrow because many streets are hundreds of years older than cars. And so on, and so forth. Truly revealing.

Especially for the glass bottles, as their are even reused and not "only" recycled. Many, maybe not most of the people would recycle the stuff, especially for the glass bottles even there is no deposit, because bringing it to a glass recycling container or to a shop would not change the way you need to take get them away. At the local supermarkets here there are boxes where you can donate your voucher for the deposit, and they are always quite full.

100% true. When I was in an American diner, they served ice with water. To me it looked like they wanted to sink the Titanic again. As a German, I find that ridiculous. You can't drink it like that, I suppose that's the plan behind it so you not get feed up too quickly. Typically American, wasting energy freezing the water and thawing it for drinking.

The "warm water" part is BS (sorry for the harsh word, but it IS true) water here gets served COLD, just NOT with ice cubes unless you ask for them (DON'T EVER DO THAT WITH BEER!). Americans just think anything wihtout ice = WARM even when you serve them water that is just 1°C above freezing in a glas so thick that it keeps the temperatur for quite some time. Also: the "bring bottles back to the store" part is NOT just for recycling but also because you get 0.25€ per can/plastic bottle and 0.15€ per beer bottle back as deposit when you return them. (and 3€ per case if the bottles came in one) I've managed to pay for whole shopping trips with the bottles i had gathered for the last few weeks ^^

- The water is not warm but it is not full with ice cubes. - The streets are narrower because the probability that these streets existed before cars were a thing are high. - Shops that are reluctant to accept credit cards do that often times because there are fees to pay - and if the fees are higher than what the customer buys it is to the loss of the owner of the shop. Makes no sense. - Villages / empty land around them - in the past times the villagers were often together to defend themselves against outsiders. The land around the villages are farmland where there are usually some kind of crop at a certain time of the year. She has a very narrow point of view comparing everything to the US without asking herself why these differences are there.

12:20 the people carrying bottles back is them retrieving the pfand on the bottle. No clue what the english word for it is but if you buy a bottle you pay a small amount (like 25ct) extra which you receive back for returning the bottle to the shop.

A few years ago my wife forgot to pay for her gas while she did pay for cigarettes she bought at the same time. The owners of the gas station reported her to the police and the police send her an letter about the case. My wife then went to the gas station and explained that she just forgot to pay. They did believe her because she was a regular customer at this gas station. So, she just paid for the gas, they retracted their complaint from the police and that's the end of the story.

with systems that rely on honesty/trust and people being decent (not speaking of things like gas stations where you actually will be getting prosecuted for not paying, but for example the unattended self-service potato/strawberry/asparagus/whatever stalls you find at the side of the road here and there), I also think that if enough people take things without paying, the sellers would eventually shut down the service, which would absolutely suck, so of course I pay the amount they ask for.

@@hansmeiser32 I sometimes buy potatoes at the stall in our village, mostly at the end of the month when only some coins are left in my purse, or when it's simply just too annoying or really not worth the time and energy spent to get to the supermarket.🤷‍♀️ It's really convenient. Though the potatoes at Aldi are actually cheaper. But then again buying potatoes in the village gives me the good feeling of supporting the local farmer (you really can't get any more supportive of local produce), plus at least the price here seems to have stayed the same over the past couple of years, while in the supermarkets of course it tends to change. Then, often this happens, though: when I am at Aldi I think "nah, I'll buy potatoes from the stall at home (plus I won't have to transport a whole sack all the way home)" and later when I think of going to the stall it's: "nah, I'll bring potatoes from Aldi next time!". It's a struggle!🥴 ...But still convenient.

But it's on one of my preferred cycling tours and later on that tour is an amazing country butchery (Landfleischerei) where I always buy something and if the shop is closed you can buy almost everything they offer at 2 vending machines. Another one of these trust based "services" near my home is the ferry Hardenstein in Witten to cross the Ruhr. It's a very small ferry only for pedestrians and cyclists and they operate according to the motto "pay as much as you think it's worth".

I just did the conversion and I keep my fridge at 4 degrees which is the temp of the water I just got out of it, perfectly refreshing. My husband drinks the water out of our storage, so room temp, but he drinks his coke with ice in America. To me there is nothing worse than a room temp coke. I envy his flexibility.

Our body´s temperature is around 36 to 37° Centigrade. If you drink cold water your body will heat the water up to your body temperature, using up energy. So drinking warm water actually keeps your body from warming up, as crazy as it sounds like.

Yeh curd is quark. Some variation of fresh cheese. Tasche is just to describe that there is a mould in the pastry for the curd to sit. ... you could say cake baked with curd cream in the middle. if you are living on the countryside in small villages, the probably don't take credit cards but in real cities (100.000+) you can pay with credit card almost everywhere. but if you want to pay your espresso (€2.50) with a credit card they don't like that cause the fees the pay to amex, visa etc. to high to make it worth for €2,50 to take. more than €10 no problem at all.

"Curd" is not wrong, but also not correct. Quark hasn't an exactly english translation; it is a kind of cream cheese. Oh, btw: _this_ Quark has nothing to do with the elementary particles. The austrian word for it is _Topfen._ Depending on its fat content the color is white to slightly yellow, it has a slightly sour taste. Petrol stations: theoretically you could drive away without paying. But that is theft, ie a criminal offence. Yes, the petrol stations have cameras taking video of anyone entering the station from ALL angles. Your license plate is ALWAYS on those videos. Every car in Germany (and most of Europe) has to be registered in their respective countries of origin with home adress, or if a rental, with the rental company's home base. In either case they quickly can find your vehicle from that register. In Germany the fine of 500€ is ON TOP of the fuel you pumped. If it can't be ascertained clearly how much was pumped, then it will be assumed to have been a FULL tank for the vehicle type being filled. Rental companies will charge you not only the fuel, but all the administrative fees, as well as the fine to your credit card. So, eh, no, it isn't worth the hassle. /Edit 1: Petrol prices in Germany are VERY high. During the pandemic and the energy crisis right at the start of the Ukraine war the petrol prices skyrocketed for a short time to 2.50€ a liter. Now they've settled back down, but still are fairly variable. From 1.80€ right up to 2.10€ per liter, these vary quite a lot. BTW: most of the price is actually petrol tax levied by the federal government. /end edit 1. Also most petrol stations have a small shop inside the cashier's room with all kinds of sweets, knick-knacks, small car devices, windshield washer fluid, and everything vehicle related to tempt you into additional sales and not just the fuel. On the Autobahn the restrooms are often blocked by a coin-operated barrier with a cash voucher you can redeem at any of the same type of rest stops. Usually a 75 cents entry fee for the restroom gives a 50 cent voucher. Obviously nothing will cost only 50 cents, so you will be 'incentivized' to buy even more if you need the restrooms. Granted, the restrooms are usually VERY clean compared to 'free' restrooms at reststops in many other countries, so it might be worth spending that little extra money for a non-stinky experience and clean hand washing stations, towels, etc. But that is also one of the culture shocks many Americans (and other tourists) have that they have to pay for using the restrooms in Germany. /Edit 2: 6:00 weeell, technically, yes that is correct. Quark is a kind of very young cheese, like a cream cheese but still at the curd stage. Not strained excessively. So, yeah a Quark (curd) -tasche (bag) is a very (!) literal translation.

I once forgot to pay the gas bill and just payed for a snak inside the gas station. That came out very expensiv instead of 25€ I payed around 125€, but no fine. Those were the costs the gasstation had finding out my adress from the licence plait on my car. Having to ask the register office and the cost of an incasso company they handed it over to get their money. It was embarrasing and expensiv but I don't became a registered criminal. 😊

Recycling: As a German who has studied the subject for years, I'm sorry to say that most of the recycling hype is nonsense. It works for paper, glass and biological waste, and more recently for disposable beverage bottles returned to supermarkets. Except for a minimal amount, most of the old plastic is "thermally recycled" (= incinerated) or shipped to East Asia and dumped into the landscape (and then often ends up in the ocean)! So it is best to always throw plastic waste into the normal (=residual waste-) garbage can. It is burned also then, but thereby warmth and electric power are produced as well as the exhaust gases optimally filtered. The bottom line is that Germany is not better than most other countries, but only more mendacious! Translation by deepl

It must finally get around that Germany is anything but a role model when it comes to recycling. And even if only ten people throw their "recyclables" into the residual waste, that's already better than nothing.

That's not really good advice. It may be fine for the way it currently is implemented, but in the long run, you'll hold up making it better. This is good as a general rule, not just for Recycling stuff: Your actions should not be based on such actual implementation details except when there is some kind of emergency or obvious defect. Because you never know when those details may change and what previously would have been fine (or maybe even better as you pointed out) is now much worse - also leaving you most of the time no way of knowing it, at least until much later.
