The world around us is a symphony of vibrations. From temperature, light, sound and a host of other physical quantities, we live in a world of continuously varying signals. Capturing these signals and making them do amazing things is the domain of the analog circuit designer.
Join us for the special night on October 15 featuring a panel discussion on the world of analog systems and one of its biggest stars, Jim Williams.
Williams was a remarkable man: an engineer who was self-taught yet set the bar for the entire technical community. Artist, scientist, mentor and teacher, celebrate and reflect upon this man's influence and on the world of analog systems around us with five distinguished guests:
- Co-founder and CTO of Linear Technology , Bob Dobkin,
- Founder and CTO, Bam Labs Inc, Steve Young,
- Vice President, Power Management Products, Linear Technology, Steve Pietkiewicz,
- Professor, Stanford University, Department of Electrical Engineering, Greg Kovacs.
- Museum President & CEO, John Hollar will moderate the conversation.
On the same day, the Museum also opened its new exhibit: "An Analog Life: Remembering Jim Williams," featuring Jim Williams's famous analog workbench. We hope you can join us Oct 15 to see the exhibit and attend the panel.

I'm by no means of the caliber or skill of Jim Williams, but I am an analog engineer at heart and Jim has been my inspiration for over 40 years. What a remarkable man & engineer! It's too bad I have not been able to practice analog engineering as much as Jim did. I often get drawn into digital projects, because an analog-oriented engineer is becoming a rarity and is often needed in a "digital" project, as the "digital" engineers have not studied analog principles and so forth, even though "digital" is simply analog running between supply rails. Oh well. I miss Jim every day. It was always a comfort to know he was available to help me with extreme problems - and he was! He was always available for even the small potatoes like me. One could do worse than to emulate his life - not just the engineering, but all of it. I can only imagine what Jim is doing now with "celestial components" to work with!

Highly recommend anyone who is interested in electronic circuits skip up to the interview panel about 20 minutes in. Superb and actually very dam useful info. Goes to show you don't need a degree to be a good engineer. Did not know that about Jim!

I commented at the beginning of this but I did not think I could spare the time to watch all of it. Of course, there is so much to learn from these guys, so I had to watch. I am glad I did. I could never have guessed that I had so many idiosyncrasies in common with Jim Williams! I feel humbled. I really wish I had been able to work with Jim or at least be around him sometimes when he did what he did. Of course, I could have learned a ton, but, he would have been so much fun to just be with. Instead of being criticized for some of these traits, perhaps I would have enjoyed some of it if I could have pointed out that it was the same thing Jim did. Sorry to insert myself in here, but perhaps there is someone else who may read this who is in the same boat as I am and could get something from my words. Perhaps I could be part of a team of several dozen engineers who could step in and take over the work Jim left behind, unfinished, as well as new opportunities that will require as much talent as Jim always displayed, but not in any way did he brag or even take credit for some of his work. He was like that - he didn't care about being glorified, as long as the job was done to his standards, he'd freely share credit and even would sometimes give away credit he deserved for someone else who worked with him. I will miss him very much. No, I MISS him very much. Just knowing he was at his desk and would answer his phone if I called gave me confidence and assurance that the work would get done. Now, I'm totally on my own. Oh well, I guess I'll just make the best of it......

just found out he died. He was helping me select chips for bass preamps I was building back in 2010. From his knowledge I have some of the best preamps I ever used

Jim Williams could have written successfully on any subject, in my opinion. The whole industry benefited from someone like him being in the field.

2011 was indeed terrible for technology. It feels like everyone who mattered in tech, died that year. Richie, Jobs *and* Williams, the same year. It's crazy.
