The realization hit me like an apricot scented hammer! It was such a subtle writing choice conveyed through the mechanics; we got to experience how alcohol helps him cope with his stressful job.

I always found it interesting, when you shoot Cunoesse, the paper specifically labels the RCM as a "paramilitary outfit" which really hammers home how little the RCM is respected in Martinase. Finding out you're *barely* a cop, only propped up by the foreign influence of the Moralintern, and is cracking at the seams with the RCM itself planning revolution is wild.
@boserboser68703 ай бұрын
It parallels you to the mercs at the tribunal. Their just the international branch of YOUR job. Only difference is they dont have a pretence of serving the people. As a cop you theoretically can do good. But you dont have to. The thin blue line will protect you from the consequences of near all your crimes
@sonyblank14873 ай бұрын
@boserboser6870 yeah, now that I think about it, it does all flow back to the Moralintern trying to exert influence - either through supposed "public supported" police or through outright mercenary enforcement.

When you realise they build a thing of the past (the church) around the encroaching future (the pale) to cancel it out
@GayleenFroese Жыл бұрын
My theory about why Harry is so persistent in talking to the Working Class Woman about her husband is that some deep part of his brain remembers seeing her husband on the boardwalk the first night he was in town. His subconscious put the pieces together somehow--maybe he searched the body that first night and found a photo of her in his wallet, or maybe he found the library card and saw her reading a book and that tenuous connection was enough. So much in the game is explained if you assume that we was all over that area across the waterlock on his first night. Especially if you assume he went to the church.
@boserboser68703 ай бұрын
Thats a cool idea. Other thing. Harry has been shown to be able to see thr future and events he wasnt present for. The pale (like that within the church) contains echoes of the future. Its implied that him being such a good detective is because he has something akin to flawed omniscient of any event within the history of Revashol

One of my favorite things about Disco Elysium, is thinking about the impact this game's gonna have *on people who make games.* This is going to inspire the fuck out of a lot of people, and we're gonna end up with some fucking fantastic video games because of it.

waste land of reality increases your PSY by 1 (which thus increases all your PSY skills and their learning caps by 1), so besides from the -1 physical instrument and no positive effects from alcohol it's a pretty big buff, not really the debuff you saw it as in the video.

I really like the story this makes with the thinker archetype. He's drank himself into a pit where his empathy is almost gone and he's becoming a case solving machine. But after he loses his memories he takes a good hard look in the mirror and decides "no more." He gets clean, shaves his face, looses the idiotic expression and learns to connect with people more.

@@nevercurrentgames90 Amazing video analysis man. I couldn't help but get choked up when you started explaining substance addiction/dependency and the horrible withdrawal that comes along with it. You are 100% right, late stage opioid addicts (That is what I am, have been for over 10 years.) and late stage alcoholics, you don't take the pills or drink the alcohol to get high anymore, you need it to even feel some semblance of normalcy. Disco Elysium and Harry's character forced me to *really* take a closer look at myself, something I honestly have avoided out of fear. Anyway, sorry for the rant, thanks for the video, I subbed.

15:35 I haven't read through all the comments so I don't know if it's been said or not, but Disco Elysium's title goes even deeper than that : Not only is it the heavenly disco were Harry/Harrier and Kim can continue solving quests, the chruch gang can dance for all eternity and everyone can live out their purpose Elysium is also the name of the world you inhabit, the world that contains Revachol, itself containing Martinaise and Disco? Disco is the name of the musical genre, taken as a shortening of the portmanteau Discotheque, a mix of disque and bilbiotheque (disk and library) but Disco also means "To Learn" in latin You, the amnesia riddled superstar, racist, inexplicably feminist, libero-communist hobocop who's a master at shit compression, are learning about the world you live in Disco Elysium

I'm not sure most of the people in Martinese would think badly of you for punching Cuno. (It's incredible what the game does with that, btw. Most games simply wouldn't let you hit a kid. Disco says, go ahead. Hit him. You get maybe two seconds of satisfaction from shutting his mouth, followed by him saying you remind him of his dad, which makes you feel sick for the rest of the game. THAT'S how you teach people something and make it stick.)
