Παλλάδ' Ἀθηναίην ἐρυσίπτολιν ἄρχομ' ἀείδειν,
δεινήν, ᾗ σὺν Ἄρηι μέλει πολεμήια ἔργα
περθόμεναί τε πόληες ἀϋτή τε πτόλεμοί τε,
καί τ' ἐῤῥύσατο λαὸν ἰόντα τε νισσόμενόν τε.
χαῖρε, θεά, δὸς δ' ἄμμι τύχην εὐδαιμονίην τε.
Of Pallas Athena the city-protector I begin to sing,
the dreadful one, who with Ares performs the warlike works,
destroying cities and conducting war herself,
and safeguards the people as they go and return.
Hail, goddess, give to us good fortune and prosperity.
