To me, the Roctane is the best looking R18 model yet. Fabulous design and build quality. I would prefer one over the Harley equivalent; firstly because I'm a big fan of shaft drive and secondly for the exclusivity - everyone and his dog is tooling around on a Harley bagger in these parts. Cheers from Alabama

I traded my Harley for an R18 first edition partly because of the 'Sons of anarchy ' dress code and attitude that a lot of Harley owners feel the need to adopt . Nice review mate! Im a current Harley owner and the Roctane is high on my next bike list. I've always wanted a Road king but here in Australia a new Road king will set you back between $38-42k depending on dealer. Second hand mid 30s. A new Roctane is $26sh.. you get a LOT for your money with the BMW and it looks way better in person. Second hand here the R18 go for half nothing. I seen one on marketplace for $14.5k the other day. The R18 was actually on my shortlist when I was buying a new bike. Ended up buying a Low Rider ST. For me it just came down to seating position with the foot controls just being uncomfortable for me on the R18, and the other huge factor for me was the availability of after market parts. I'm also from the US and every mechanic knows how to work on a Harley really well lol. If it came down to price over everything else the R18 would've won for sure, the Low Rider was an expensive buy. I kept staring at that weird cylinder above the handlebars, so I'm glad you explained what it is. Not a very elegant solution, but who needs speakers anyway, I always use earplugs too. Great bike and very glad BMW is getting into this genre of motorcycle. I test rode one and was impressed but it has a ways to go to compete with HD and on some levels Indian. Without a doubt the build quality finishing is tops and equal to HD…both ahead of Indian. Riding dynamics, and I must caveat it’s a individual call, is it lacks the total riding dynamics for the American roads…both HD and Indian have flat nailed this riding dynamics considering highway and suburban miles. But this is definitely worth a look and buy decision if you don’t want to follow the crowd…watch the dealers as the quoted price screams higher with some personalization of add on’s. Very good bike

I want to like this bike. It is handsome for sure but when I tried it I found the legroom limited and the bars a bit of a stretch, I would describe it more as wierd rather than uncomfortable. It could do with a bigger tank as well, the bike is big enough that it wouldn't look out of place.

This bike is huge and disproportionately large especially for older or smaller riders. It would need a very ample garage to be parked in and to make it easy enough to maneuver out to ride. I'm not sure after 30 minutes wrestling the bike around my place I'd feel like riding....maybe a nap instead. 😁😁 I'm not slagging the bike as I'm sure it would be an excellent bike to ride given you are the proper size and you have enough space much like other big bikes from other brands.

Biggest issue with the R18 family is the very high purchase price and then the huge depreciation. I agree that it is a great looking bike, though. As far as BMWs go, I'd most likely opt in for the new R12. Though, like you, I am partial to Harleys, especially the pre-M8s.

Have you considered issues with V-twin engine rear cylinders not receiving equal air flow/cooling as the front cylinder?

Most ridiculous $30k ya can spend on a non-HD. Also, this kinda design + price is putting HD outta biz, so nice copying that, BMW....
