An Answer to Prayer?! The Korg Pa5X Professional Arranger

You know, an amazing arranger like this simply does what all those beat and groove boxes do- and about a thousand more things. No one talks down those. This synth can be as cool as any modern groove box. One is not required to use all the instruments in a style. Just use it for drum and bass if that is your need. Sheesh, I don’t get the idiots that badmouth powerful gear like this. If you are creative, this device is absolutely killer. And it is a full featured fully editable SYNTH!

What jumps out at me is the sound quality of the lead instruments. Even with YT compression you can tell they are top of the line. Groove boxes, Korg Karma and Montage Arps approach this capability with a bit more dependence on the player and a lower "cheese" factor. But the PA5x, if cheesy, it is hard and high quality cheese. There are styles and custom capabilities that would challenge the listener to "tell" it was not live musicians. Like you, I am not the musician I would need to be for these, I like the synth textural world. But the quality of the sounds is intriguing.

Excellent keyboard with some major flaws: Does not have the basic functionality such as "Back up Sequencer / Quick record that Korg has given for 20 plus year. I hope they give us this functionality in teh the next OS upgrade.

good car, the only version is not finalized, the problem is the control regulators until you raise it to 127 and lower it, then it starts to work, the bender sometimes does not build, plus the lights on the button probably get very hot, the button starts to crack, or when there is a new version, it is necessary to remove these errors that the button only lights up when pressed, sometimes it also freezes when recording, these errors were removed on the new version, then there is no better tool than this 👍👍👍👍👍

MODX/MODX+ and a good amount of time learning one makes most arrangers obsolete. Not to mention you also have a full fledged synth at your fingertips as well.

Thank you for the Vid, The KORG is a great Arranger, but!!!! To much problems with set convertion, many things are missing, not working or not included. Also lot of the KB has malfunctions and some issues on building them. The OS is not stable, Hope they can fix it, About the PIANOS you are talking about, ON THE KRONOS they sound superb, In the PA 5 X they sound BAD! To much noise. etc etc we have to wait and see IF Korg can adress all.

I know many guys that can't really play an instrument but make $30k-$40k a year playing one-man band 5-6 nights a week. They know a hand full of two-finger chords and only play in the keys of C (for major) and Am (for minor). People come up, tell them the style (Rumba, Cha Cha, Tango...) and the key they sing in and that's all. I've seen a few amazing musicians on arrangers but not many.

I own one myself I think it’s a monster and can’t be compared with any other arranger keyboard and for your info's Yamaha doesn’t dominate the arranger world Korg does especially in the Middle East and most European countries too. it’s very rare you see someone using Yamaha cuz it’s not user friendly and it has a lot of issues too even though it’s 5 years old that been said, as far as issues yes it does have some flaws like all the new keyboard when they come out. it needs couple more updates that’s all but it’s the best arranger out there.

Exactly my thoughts as well. I don't agree with him on that one at all. Yamaha and Korg maybe on a par in terms of sound quality. But the Pa5x (and Pa4x) are indeed more user friendly. As to arranger keyboards Yamaha does by no means dominate the market, particularly when it comes to oriental styles. I used to play the Yamaha Genos, but now I'm very happy with my Pa4x.

In the US and western Europe, Yamaha DOES dominate the market. As for interface, I haven't worked with either, but did just watch a video of a British gentleman extolling the virtues of his Genos, and complaining about how unusable the Korg models are (point being that it's a matter of taste, and of what you're used to)

Not really, arrangers can change the chord variation of their midi sequence depending on the chord triggered by the keyboardists. Whereas, a midi sequencer (linear, clip or pattern) can't change their sequence and are fixed to whatever is originally recorded. Think of an arranger as 8 different arpeggiators running simultaneously to emulate a band (since an arpeggiator changes its notes depending on what you play).

No, actually the Roland MV-1 is the one aimed at making traditionally structured songs via arranging sections. MC-707 is related, but more oriented towards live clip launching style of making dance music.

I own a Pa5X for months now and the operating system is crap. Lots of bugs and Korg is very slow with fixing it. Since version 1.3.0 it is still missing features from the Pa4X. And the Pa5X have a big problem with the leds. They change color. It is my first Korg and will be my last for now.

Yeah, to me these kind of keyboards are definitely made for the wedding / cover band musician. They're definitely not for designing interesting sounds or any kind of strange or interesting music in any way. I had a Kronos 2 for a while and hated it. The touch screen, the sterile sound, the instant backing tracks to play along to pop hits (reminds me of early toy casios). When almost every preset sound is named after a popular song or group, you know who the keyboard is made for. It's an answer to all the prayers of cover "artists", middle aged man cave guys that "jam" with their buddies on the weekends, sterile ripoff musicians that don't want to be in a cover band but want to completely copy everything else about a band, and maybe some people that want to make super cheesy daytime TV music for bad dramas and maybe some commercial music for prescription medicines. Get an old Ensoniq with a 16 track sequencer, a couple synths, and a drum machine and you'll have a way more interesting "arranger" and a lot more money. I'm well into my dad years but when I see someone playing one of these I feel like a teen being embarrassed by someone's dad that really wants to show me his "cool" keyboard. "Check it out...... it's "These Eyes"...... by the Guess Who......... cool, hey? Now look....... it's Emerson's Moog (mispronounced mewg)..... pretty cool, hey?"

Hey, I don’t think you are checking the correct keyboard, if you need analog sounds with controls that make you design the sounds the way you want, then you should check the Korg Prologue or Minilogue. The Wavestate and Opsix are digital but made for sound design. Take a look to them and you will be surprised. The arrangers are certainly for cover bands and wedding artists ! Funny comment tough 😂

That's funny, whenever I play the Kronos, weird shit comes out, never covers or pop... it's actually a great synth for sound design. Not all that knobby, but it has some controls. It's definitely not an arranger, but you can set up different scenes to access with the buttons above the sliders, if that's your thing.

These arrangers are the "new" home organs, hotel restaurant one-man-band entertainer style instruments, they're cheaper versions of the likes of Wersi Verona, Scala etc, and Yamaha Electone series (which can cost as much as a brand new car). But in a way they are more technically sophisticated than those "hotel" instruments that has it all built in, like huge speakers, multiple keyboards, footpedals for intro, changes, variations, outro and bass pedals. A little hot-tip for people on a budget is to search for using Yamaha Montage as an arranger, and then apply that to the cheaper little sister called ModX or ModX+. You can totally use those as arrangers as the custom programmable buttons can be used for sequences, intro, outros, fills etc. And to top it off, you also have a music synthesizer at your fingertips.

Yamaha for me all the way, and wait and watch the space as I do believe that Yamaha is taking its time to replace the Genos at some point too. Yamaha is very much like Apple, if they do something, it will be completely supported by lots of Style packs, and so many around that space. Yes, Yamaha still dominates this market and rightfully so.

A god that answers prayers with "don't buy an arranger keyboard" must be a moon god, because he is a lunatic. Arranger Keyboards are great. I just doubt that 4,5k of Terracoins is worth the fun. I get it, it is a great instrument. But the Yamaha products sound great as well, even the cheaper ones. And if you are into cheesy 80s stuff, even a Roland RA50 will make your day. For 1-2% of the price tag of the Pa5X.

In terms of features and value, no. But it is in popularity. Almost everywhere I go that uses an arranger, people rave about Yamaha and their PSR SX/S series more than they do Korg's arranger lineup. With the PA5X's new UI, feature-set and updated specs, that might just change.
