Currently, depending on how you derive your ratio to convert ingame distances to ARK Starmap distances, the RAFT is the ONLY ship that can actually make it to Pyro III from anywhere in Stanton. The most generous ratio I could find (I forget which known distance I used, I think PO to NB?) would also let the Herc make it, but nothing else even remotely came close. The RAFT's fuel reserves may be an indication that they've finalized or near enough finalized the distances to the jump points and bodies in Pyro to the point where they can give the RAFT a tank that will reach, to use as a calibration method to adjust all the other tanks once the need to travel to Pyro is required.

@@themountainsleeps anything that can haul really feels like it. Pound for pound (SCU for SCU) the Freelancer feels the best because it feels like you load the same amount a tractor-trailer can handle (A bit more to be fair). More kinship with the Freelancer I feel is with the tight living space behind the cockpit which is how it feels in a super sleeper semi truck. Of course, the Freelancer commercial related to truckers too lol. Taking a look at the Hull A - E series... despite them being literal space trains, I also see similarities with trucks in them as well... Space Convoy, perhaps? And also the fact that the cargo containers are exposed. Currently usable, yeah the caterpillar does have VERY close similarities. And between both of them (Caterpillar and Raft - uwu AugustxMira) I don't know if I could pick one over the other, as trucks specialize just as much as these ships do. I've used truck trailers with as many doors on them as a caterpillar, and I've used flatbed truck trailers that can load 3 (small) shipping containers on them (albeit loaded from the top, not the bottom...). Suffice it to say, they're both work horses. Both very trucker friendly. At the end of the day, I would probably be satisfied using either of them to make money. Really depends on how balanced delivery becomes. Naturally, as someone trying to earn money, you go where the money is. (Jastre is a sexy bitch). Right now I'm impressed with how much I'm making with my Carrack. I've had a caterpillar before but I like to switch up my main vehicle and the Carrack has a respawn point on board so it's just a tad more useful at the moment 😉 I love both the Caterpillar and the Raft, of course the Raft is new and when the big cargo update happens I'll definitely be trying it out!

@@themountainsleeps I think I neglected to actually answer your question directly... I guess at the end of the day it's up to what you want to haul. Between the Cat and the Raft, the Cat makes me thing of hauling bulk raw material, like ore or grain/produce. Obviously it is technically more versatile than that. But, with all the ports and ease of access to its storage compartments, along with its overall design and color scheme, makes me thing it would do runs from a mining facility or a produce planet to some sort of factory drop off (and has a very large range allowing it to get to remote locations). The Raft seems more like a ship that would run intermodal cargo from planet to planet in the same solar system on a dedicated route doing drop and hooks since it picks up the big containers directly. Of course, you could always do whatever you want with those ships and fly the one you think looks the coolest!

Looks mean nothing here: it can load a third of its entire load at once, something few other ships can hope to do, and something NOTHING in its capacity size can do at all. (Barring getting a second ship to tractor beam a container into a Freelancer, but then you're *restricted* to a third of its capacity, instead of the whole thing, because it's not meant to handle those containers.) It's perks are the speed at loading and unloading the Hull series, something nothing else can do. There's also rumours it can load the larger Hull-D and Hull-E containers, ofc at the cost of fitting in tight places, not that it would care about that.
@Spookytooth012 жыл бұрын
I would like to think that those containers are not necessarily just for the storage of the smaller containers and that they could be utilised for the loading of larger components, something the likes of the Freelancer etc won’t be able to do. Hopefully transporting goods will expand in the game and involve these larger items, say machinery or weapons, or anything that can’t fit in the small storage boxes we have at present.

The bumbers look a lot like what you see in current day harbour tug boats, a way to push larger vessels. Though the cargo section is it's main focus in the current gameplay, you could see these in a orbital shipyard or near station being used to guide larger ships like a merchantman or a hull e into a docking port that would otherwise be difficult to reach. Especially for ships coming in to drydock for repairs you might not want to bet your expensive station on all of the thrusters of the damaged vessel still working fine so you would use a strong little ship to push the big ship into berthing. Double duty in the same context, as it can then also deliver the spare parts and resources needed to build or fix ships in the cargo containers.

At the end of the video you mentioned shipping and it got me thinking. Cargo hauling vs shipping is a distinction, though often used interchangeably, but I can see the difference with the RAFT vs previous hauler ships on offer. The RAFT with the pre-loaded cargo containers really feels like a shipping vessel whereas a ship like the Caterpillar feels more like a cargo hauler in that it is taking individual crates of goods. I think that makes for a very interesting potential in the hauling gameplay loop that has not been explored in other games. For those that wonder the distinction I find between 'cargo' and 'shipping' in terms of hauling goods is that 'cargo' tends to be a vehicle laden with a specific category of goods; typically to a single destination like a retail store. 'Shipping' in terms of hauling goods tends to be a vehicle (think ships in the real world) that are laden with a broad assortment of products; one container might have goods for NIKE, another goods for Intel, and another for goods for Wal-Mart, but all are being shipped on the same craft.
@ALEXANDER13182 жыл бұрын
I think the bumpers above the cockpit are maybe magnetic pads, allowing the ship to act as a tugboat, moving cargobarges, -containers or other ships to the right place that are too big to attach to the mounting points of the RAFT.
@christianmolick86472 жыл бұрын
One subtle detail that did not get mentioned is the difference between the pressurized habitation areas and the rest of the ship. The elevator shaft and top deck are all effectively exterior spaces that require some kind of suit with a helmet in most environments. That may seem like an oversight, but eases getting in and out and adds some interesting details such as multiple gunners being able to aim down the elevator and ladder shafts to mount defense of the ship from the top deck.

The purpose of the front bumpers. Many pilots when landing at open top landing bays, will use the "nose first" or "slot the battery" method for landing. On the Argo RAFT, because of it's design, it looses more thrust than most other ship when transitioning to VTOL. This dramatic loss of lift compared to other ship can be quite surprising to pilots jumping into the RAFT for the first time. The bumpers can save you some damage cost when you forget this characteristic and plant your nose in the hanger floor on a dark stormy night on New Babbage.

@Arkticus2 жыл бұрын
What struck me about the RAFT's interior, besides the really nice living quarters, was the sensible circulation. You have two ways of getting around to the second and first floor: the elevator, that also acts as your ground entry point, and a ladder that connects the armour room to the door close to the cargo pod station. Now, this is not the first ship where we have a ladder in addition to the elevator by far, but it is unusual in that the ladder is so far removed from the said elevator, which in my mind is a plus. As I said, this ship has _circulation_ in its pathing, and I just like little things like that. It makes going about your tasks so much nicer, when you don't feel like you're constantly yoyoing between the different monitors and work stations and that one damn entry point that you have to use in order to get around anywhere else. Also, I said during the concept sale, and I hold this pet conspiracy theory to this day. I think the back of the ship is actually ment to be able to extend, just a tine little bit, so that it can fit a fuel container of some kind. No, I don't think this ship meant to be able to refuel anything, but it just seems odd to me to have that skeletonized back area, and only have it carry 3 cargo pods. As I said, this is a conspiracy theory, so take it with as many table fulls of salt as you feel necessary, but I am curious to see if I'm just crazy or if there's more to this ship that we've been lead to believe...

The RAFT makes so much more sense, now that the HULL-C is in game. The HULL-C sits in orbit while a RAFT moves cargo from the planet to the staging area for the HULL-C. Assuming that you only need 1 crew member to operate the RAFT unless you're under fire or dealing with an emergency, the 2 man crew can work in shifts, meaning the RAFT never has to stop moving. You mention "skid steers" and "semi trucks" in the video, but I'm now certain that the RAFT fulfills the role of a cargo crane at an industrial port. If the HULL-C is a cargo freighter (as it's massive 4000+scu cargo capacity suggests), then the RAFT is most certainly the crane for loading and unloading.

So this is like a container ship with it's own cranes! While all other cargo ships require a dedicated cargo port with handling equipment, the RAFT can load and unload cargo by itself. I can imagine an offworld shipping company using a fleet of ARGO RAFT and Cargo at different levels of their operation. For example, you could use Cargo to move smaller shipments to a central location to be then moved by a RAFT to a space station, and from their regular cargo ships can take over.

I believe the front bumper is just that, a bumper. Look at the cockpit design itself from the outside and how it is angled. You will be looking down as much as you would be outwards. Being in tight areas to dump or pick up cargo is the nature of the beast. The design of the bridge interior reminds me more of a cockpit for a sawmill, where the user would be situated in a near over head view looking down relying on sensors and on board cameras as well as visual cues. I'm actually pretty impressed with the thought process on this one.

Hopefully this will make sense some day. I imagine stuff like Liquids, Steel, mineral ore etc. to be super heavy. So to lift it from the ground of a planet you need something like the argo cargo that has powerfull vtol thrusters. The same amount of cargo might fit into many other ships from a volume perspective, but the ship would not be able to achieve liftoff. Also you have the attached cranes, that hint it is supposed to be used in gravity. It is probably not possible to move big cargo containers with your habdheld tractor beam, so having a ship that is able to move big cargo boxes without any infrastructure seems like a good idea. Of course a Hull-series ship that gets loaded in zero g will be ablte to transport a lot more cargo but it can not go down to a planet.

Of all the ships in the verse, this one has the most realistic galley IMHO. It’s also oozing with a utilitarian feel throughout. And while all ships in Star Citizen are stupid overpriced, this one has a comparatively reasonable price. Not sure what it’s going to cost in game or if it’s even available in game yet though.

My take on the bumpers: They are used to help ships like the Hull-series to unload their containers as most of them are unable to land on planets. The RAFT can remove them with the cargo handlers, attach the it's holders, and then fly to the unloading area. Then fly back with new containers.

I really like this review, you successfully managed to highlight the elements of this ship that really sold the idea for me. I can see myself using this ship in the unloading process of a Hull C/D/E and ferrying the containers to the surface below.

This was a terrific review of the Argo Raft. When I first got the Raft, I loved it but found it difficult to justify keeping. There are several freighters that haul more, fly faster, and are better armed. I melted my Raft to purchase another ship. But I discovered I really missed it, so I soon bought it back. I don't plan on letting it go again. In the future, I expect this vehicle will have certain advantages over others, as you've so thoughtfully mentioned in your video. Thanks.

I love how compact it is. Through i would love if it had its own personal storage to transport small fragile cargo. But there are plenty of ships that can do that.

Just wanted to say i absolutely loved watching this video, which put me onto watching the rest of yours. Between space engineers and other games, i've always marveled a well designed ship, but never heard anyone be able to describe to the detail that you do. Keep up the great work man, everything flows great in your videos and i know everyone appreciates them.

They are the smallest type of cargo containers we'll have going forward from the cargo refactor. The largest sized containers will be hauled by the larger Hull series

Something that could be addressed if they just let us stack 2 containers before attaching to the ship. There is DEFINITELY room under the ship to do something like this.

They do, but such is the price of the handling gear. However, it will be able to load and unload the Hull series faster and easier than anything else we currently have, meaning its lower or close capacity compared to some of its peers is much less of a detriment as it can load an entire third of it, by hand, at once. No other ship right now can do that aside from the Aurora ES/MR/LX by virtue of only *having* 3 SCU. (And possibly any ship that, incidentally, one full cargo trolley is one third of their load. But even then you'd have to know the trolley would stick to the grid to 'count' that, else you still have to hand unload it to the ship)

If you look closely on the roof of the raft between those bumpers it really looks like there is a refuelling orifice for a probe or something. Great videos though as always and I really like the way the raft is done.
@scottball96572 жыл бұрын
this is great commentary, your descriptions are incredible and having a more in-depth view that shows the detail this game goes into :) the bumpers on the outside of the upper system looks to me like you could (in the future maybe) when they bring in the coupling system that it could extend with multiple RAFT ships maybe i don't know seems like a train style bumper system :)

Raft might pair well with the Hull series and really any ship too big to efficiently land on the surface of planets and moons. It can quickly ferry cargo to and from a large cargo ship faster than much anything else can. It's like trucking today: you have truckers who go on the long haul trips across state lines and then there are drivers who only deliver cargo locally. The raft is your local trucker who doesn't have to go far on their routes, but makes many trips in one shift.

Great video... I imagine the bumpers allow it to be a kind of intergalactic tug boat if needed. Something that can push large objects, ships, cargo, asteroids etc. in to place if need be. Given their placement directly above and so close to the cockpit, it would allow for very precise, slow and "delicate" bump and push approach. At least if I had been the designer that would be my thought. Really enjoy these breakdowns. Currently binge watching my way through, glad I found the channel...

argo ships utilitarian design is one of my favorite. The mining ship and this cargo hauler actually seem more like something id actually see in a real world setting. The high vis orange and the lay out seems really efficient, like something id expect from a MISC ship, but with the utility cranked to 11, where as misc usually has it cranked to 10

I work in a prototype shop, and there are bumpers on our loading dock and on the trucks that come in to pickup our builds, so being that the raft is for freight they could be some kind of loading dock bumpers, so they can tuck the shio close to something with out locking together

I would imagine the front bumpers are there because it would connect it's forward airlock to something like a docking tube or another airlock, which would involve getting the front of the ship really close to something.
@michaelgoykhman89322 жыл бұрын
HOLY SHIT when I saw that "cargo councilor" area all I could think of is a scrap bomber type role where you fill those containers with explosives and the guy operating the containers has to time it so it drops correctly
@LordTimelord2 жыл бұрын
I believe the top front bumpers are for docking with a station. You'll fly the ship against the wall with the opposing air lock door. Easy, unlike docking the larger ships!
@terrybirks96622 жыл бұрын
The front bumbers look just like the bumpers on loading docks for tractor trailers, since they (for the most part) park without guides, you just back up until you push up aginst the bumpers and you are all set for loading/unloading, seeing those on the front is interesting, like it's designed to pull to a dock forward and get unloaded, not sure if that is the best way but being a ship and not a truck who knows.
