Welcome to the Orthodox Church, sasquatch! Having been baptized into the Church only a year ago, I'll tell you something I discovered that probably won't have meaning until after you are in the Church. So this is just something to recall sometime after you are received and say, "Ah, now I get it." That is that for most of the Protestant churches, converting and accepting Jesus is the endpoint, you've reached the goal. But when you convert to Orthodoxy, you're only at the beginning point. You've entered onto a journey of getting nearer and nearer to God that never ends.

Just some insight into “Lord have mercy.” The Greek word for MERCY sounds like the word for oil. Anointing people with oil for healing is an ancient practice and still done in the Church. So, when we say “Lord, have mercy” we’re basically asking for healing. We’re not doing it because God is wrathful and angry, but because He’s a Good God who loves mankind and wants to heal us. That’s also why we call the Church the hospital for the soul. Orthodoxy is here to heal us and bring us closer to God. It’s very different from the legal model of the West. It’s seems like you picked up on this important difference. Nice. Appreciate your video.

My mom and I attended an incredible Christmas concert at our local Orthodox Church. There was a Bishop in attendance which was a big deal. In the cookie social after the event, my mom started chatting with the bishop! He listened intently to her out of body experience and chatted animatedly with her for several minutes, I practically had to drag her away so he could give his attention to the other brothers and sisters who were glad to speak to him. And while they were chatting, I was discovering local connections with the priest. It’s such a down to earth and humble group of people, I love it there.

Orthodox Seminarian here, I just wanted to point out that for us, "Lord have mercy" isn't meant to mean mercy from wrath, its actually just a kind of bad translation, a better translation closer to what we mean is "Lord heal me" we say it all the time because we believe in the concept that sin is sickness rather than a legal wrongdoing.

When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

Father Spyridon gave a good explanation (hopefully I don’t butcher it). He related it to how it can have the usual understanding of seeking Gods forgiveness but also can be understood as asking the Lord to basically spare us his goodness. He gave the example of the days of antiquity when the Roman Emperor’s would return from a battle victorious they would go through the great cities and the crowds would gather, and ask the Emperor to have mercy upon them, the Emperor would the then throw his treasures to the crowd blessing them. Father Spyridon is saying (correct me if I’m wrong) that ‘Lord have mercy’ can have more than one meaning (seeking forgiveness) it can also be understood as asking the Lord to spare us His grace upon us. Both of these meanings are relevant The video is on his channel titled - “The Jesus Prayer ~ Encounter With GOD” and the explanation begins at the 4:03 mark

My existential crisis happened when I was 8. My older sister told me she was saved that summer. I asked her what that meant. She told me if you aren’t saved you go to hell, but she was saved this summer at church camp, no hell for her. Idk why I got so scared but I took that very seriously. I told her I don’t want to go to fell, please save me. She told me to ask “them”. I went to church camp that summer. It was young, but I went. I told “them”, the women in the church I needed to be saved so I won’t go to hell. I asked them why god would send me to hell, I told them I was sorry for stealing can’t from my sister, I begged them to save me. We were outside, in the forest, until who knows when. It was dark, it was scary. “They” told me satan wanted me, he wanted my eternal soul, he wanted me, and he would have me, he’s watching me. I had to pray, outside, all night, to survive. “Please lord, I give my life to you, my heart, my life, my soul. I promise to live my life in your path, and your honor, and never stray.” “Please god save this sinner, please forgive me (an 8 year old girl) I am weak, and I pledge my eternal soul to your service. I will live my life in accordance with your will, and your commandments.” “Please dear lord, come into my heart and make a place for me in your heavenly kingdom. I am your servant on earth and in heaven. Amen.” “They” had me repeat that over and over all night. I asked them if I was saved now? Will I go to heaven? They said, you will know when Heavenly Father enters your heart. If you don’t feel him, you aren’t saved. I begged those women to save me. They just said “you will know”. I was EIGHT years old. After hours of this, I “saw satan” in the tree line staring at me, calling to me, laughing. I told “them”. They told me the Holy Spirit was in a battle for my soul, and because I wasn’t accepting his grace, satan was winning. I would go to hell. You know what made me understand how easy it was to scare people into believing this? It’s funny but it’s true. The series “The Tudors”.., lol. Yes. After searching to feel Jesus, looking for the hint spirit for years, after having nightmares that Satan himself was coming to collect me.. the Tudors made me understand how easy it is to lie, and how easy it is to scare people into believing you will go to hell if you do this or that. I started researching. The damage and anxiety that was director me will never go away. I wasn’t old enough to handle Satan. But now at least I can start to understand why someone would tell an 8 year old get moral soul was in danger of being damned forever and that Satan himself was watching from the tree line. Gear closes your eyes to do many things, and the truth gives you peace.. but you wish it wasn’t true. Anyways.. ramble ramble. Sing another song ? Any new music coming out?

Convert to orthodoxy. There’s a saying in orthodoxy that beauty will save the world. Box churches, as you call them, can spend an absolute insane amount of money on sound and video systems. My Orthodox Church spent money but on beauty and on good acoustics so that we don’t need a sound system. I also fell in love with the depth of historicity and tradition and reverence. I also appreciate that, when we were inquirers, no one ever made us feel dumb or silly for asking all the questions we had. We even had people tell us to take our time because the church will still be there. No pressure at all.

Holy Week and Pascha is some of the most beautiful and meaningful services. I really encourage you to check it out! Also want to add that “Lord have mercy” translates from the Greek “Κύριε ελέησον” which is more like asking the Lord to heal you. We are looking to Him to heal us, the church is the hospital and we are the sick that flock to it :)

Such kind words, thank you! Hopefully we keep living up to that. I'm born in a Hindu family, but am now making my way into the Orthodox Chruch. And I gotta say, respect to you guys too. It was Buddhism that challenged India's oppressive caste system and introduced the ideal that all people have equal dignity. From an Orthodox perspective, my belief is that the Buddhist ideals of karuna and ahimsa find their ultimate fulfilment in the life of Jesus Christ.

clarification as a traditional Protestant: we dont like being lumped in with Evangelicals and I've noticed that you and a lot of Catholics put all Protestants into the Evangelical stereotype but tradition and reverence is definitely still in Protestantism, its just that Evangelicals dominate North America and so that 'concert and a TED talk' idea just seems Protestant. PS: really liked this video, I like seeing atheists just try out churches even if they never return to those churches

All Saints is my home. Fr. David is the first pastor I ever had and I have been a member of other churches. I love Kh. Destinie and Fr. David. All of the clergy at All Saints are amazing. I am now a part of the mission parrish or church plant out of All Saints which is in Fuquay-Varina and Fr. James and Kh. Jennifer are also amazing. As a former reformed street preacher, much of what you saw and felt resonates with me. Every Orthodox priest "that I know" is legit. Cheryl is my wife's godmother, and she is a true blessing! Also, I did have a protestant pastor who was not my pastor and drove 20 miles to meet me for lunch on numerous occasions after my family left the Watchtower. He met me once when I visited his church and never tried to convert me, he simply was there.

15:48 I’m not gonna lie. That entire scenario you set up to put into perspective the story of the Virgin Mary nearly made me shed tears at work. I almost immediately pictured myself in said scenario and it was dark. Then, all of a sudden as I prayed along side other followers someone seemingly leaned over to tell me the news while the shadows covered the walls. That was great. Appreciate the review. Not EO (Though I’ve been contemplating it for a year and a half now) but this was a great audit. 👍

Another ex Protestant Orthodx here. Very engaging video and I'm so glad you had a good experience! If it's helpful as you digest your experience, the Orthodox approach is more rooted in healing, treating sin like a sickness, and restoring ourselves to how we were created to be, in perfect union with God. This might help explain some of the differences you noticed. Anyway, best wishes! P.S. We're definitely not teetotalers 😂 True story, I went to a Serbian church one time and accidentally crashed a baptism before the Liturgy. Later, at coffee hour, there was fruit brandy flowing with the priest pouring the shots!

Great video. A lot of what you said I agree and is some of the reasons I left Protestantism for the Orthodox Church. It’s been life changing for me. The reason it cannot be replicated is because the Orthodox Church is the original and in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit, has preserved the Apostolic Tradition and maintained her Apostolic succession. There’s something deeper as you experienced that cannot be copied because it goes beyond the material world.

I laughed at the pixie dust comment at 10:30. The Orthodox Church I just became a member of in Kernersville, NC was consecrated in September. To sum it up essentially the permanent altar is assembled and the church is “baptized” and “chrismated” (not sure if those are the correct terms for a consecration). So in a sense the building is received into the wider Orthodox Church the same way every person is.

As an Orthodox Christian, I appreciate your genuine perspective and observations of the divine liturgy. Growing up Orthodox, I never related to our protestant brothers and sisters since I did not go to their services, but as I made protestant, atheist, and agnostic friends, I now see the theological differences. If you want to learn more about Orthodoxy and how it differs from Protestant or Catholic theology, I HIGHLY recommend reading "A Basic Guide to Eastern Orthodox Theology Introducing Beliefs and Practices" by Eve Tibbs. Thanks for making these awesome videos and sharing your experience with us, Jared, I am learning so much and love to watch every one!

I have been watching Atheist Church Audits for several months now. I think you're hilarious, encouraging, intelligent, and bring so much insight and clarity for people within Christian circles. I find you very respectful and resonate greatly with so much you have to say. In less than a month, I will be going through Chrismation into the Eastern Orthodox Church. I have been going for many months and just feel like it is the best expression and experience of Christianity that I've come across. I feel its depth, meaning, traditions, and heritage has made profound impacts on me. Seeing your excitement over your experience at an Antiochian Orthodox Church just resonates so deeply with me. I find Orthodoxy so beautiful and enlightening. Anyway, thanks for all you do. I grew up Protestant, was in various leadership roles in Protestant organizations, and became completely disillusioned with Protestantism but not with the Gospel in my mid 20s. For 3 years, I walked in basically Agnosticism with a Christian lean. Now, coming to Orthodoxy, I just feel at home. If you ever want to talk, let me know. Keep it up 💪🤘

You nailed it perfectly. God is first and foremost always. We don't go for our own entertainment. We go for Him. I think the reason Eastern Orthodox Priests are more in touch with their congregation is because it's required to talk with the priest and confession feels more informal and loving than in my Roman Catholic background. And it's required regularly for communion. I grew up with a regimented "bless me father for I have signed, my last confession was.." and listing off if you told a lie or said a "bad" word, and the priest rattles off say these prayers. Instead in the Orthodox Church, it's more like a counselling session with someone who knows what you have been struggling with who actually gives advice.

All Saints is a beautiful parish. I visit when I am in the Raleigh area. What you encountered was authenticity and holiness. It seems simple but it is very hard for humans to do. Not all Orthodox reach that point, but we have the institutional capacity to produce genuine saintliness, by the grace of God. Encountering it in small and large ways is one of the delights about being Orthodox.

I’ve lived in the Prot world my whole life and let’s just say I’ve had a similar experience when visiting my local Orthodox Church, it’s changing my whole perspective. So, as an atheist, one reason for the difference your saw in this Priest could be overlooked, and that is God is working more visibly in him. I have to say, when watching Orthodox Priests online, they appear brighter to me, as if they are filled with light in addition to the screen itself. Now, I have always attributed that to God drawing my attention to them vs other content. Lord Have Mercy that He continues to do that. This is a great video, and glad you had such a great experience.
